All Korra wanted was to fight, but as a girl - even as the Avatar - that world is closed to her. Refusing to accept her lot in life, she dresses as a boy to join the Fire Ferrets pro-bending team, and finds out that while being a boy might free her somewhat, she also runs into some unexpected problems...especially concerning her love life. She needed hope that somehow her bending could be restored, that things would finally be alright, that maybe Mako's care and concern went beyond feelings of friendship. She was the earth and he held onto her strength. She was the fire and he played with her flames. She was the air and he follwed her course. She was the water and he drowned in her waves.

Makorra: They're full of color.

Makorra: Mako rolled his eyes and leaned back into the couch. No matter how much he loved her, he could never forget: his girl was crazy.

Makorra: This argument was routine. That being said, all arguments between the two of them were routine. They'd been arguing with each other about anything and everything since the first day they'd met. But things had changed drastically.

Korra, Mako, and Bolin take the airbending kids to the cherry blossom festival. After a bit of hustling and general festivities, Mako gets Korra alone for a moment.

Deep down he wants her to push him away because it's easier that way. She won't, though. It's not in her nature. Through the good times and the bad they've come to trust one another, depend on one another. How can he possibly turn away?

Makorra: She had never experienced anything like it before, and it thrilled her.

Korra knows that the first time's never perfect and all that, but Mako wants to get this right.

Their lips are millimeters apart yet when he speaks, they don't touch – at least, not until he wants them to. "Absolutely," he whispers.

Makorra: He just didn't understand what it was like to have her instincts, to have that special feel for all the elements fizzling under her skin, crying out to be used, to have the compulsion to do something, knowing that she shouldn't. He didn't get it.

While the evening might not have gone as Korra had expected, it had ended exactly as she'd hoped.
