Author has written 22 stories for Lord of the Rings, and Doctor Who. Writing stories is a way of exploring "what if", or "why". I've taken a wandering path through fandoms. I often rediscover books or TV series I've known and loved in the past and then write fanfic. Although I tend to be "active" in one fandom at a time, I don't abandon past fandoms. Instead I add to or renew my interest in what I enjoy. I cherish them all for very different reasons, but there is often an underlying quality in common: I love to imagine and wonder. I love far-off lands and worlds, cultures and thoughts that are different from my own. I love characters who are not the conventional action hero (or heroine). I love those who are the opposite -- those who make me question and think, those who must struggle with some kind of unique burden or difference, those who aren't "born to be leaders" or who are action heroes. Give me Frodo who might be deeply afraid but who is keenly intelligent and ready to sacrifice himself to what he believes in. Give me Picard, a thoughtful introvert who cherishes life and freedom of thought and reason. Give me Ten (or indeed Nine or Eleven), an ancient, grief-stricken survivor, who nevertheless allows himself to open up to his almost human emotions both positive and negative. Give me Roslin who unexpectedly emerges as a leader amidst grief, fear and loss but finds her greatest strengths elsewhere. Currently I am immersed in watching, thinking about and pondering Doctor Who. I am fond of all the "new" Doctors but find "Ten" particularly compelling. I watched the show with my family as a little girl (during the Tom Baker and Peter Davison eras), and I often watched (literally) from behind the sofa. I write fanfic in the Tenth Doctor era. I have loved The Lord of the Rings ever since I read it as a child. I am a forty-something teacher with a love of the English Language, and having studied English in its ancient forms has allowed me to appreciate the works of J.R.R. Tolkien all the more. I particularly enjoy reading fanfiction based on Frodo. |
