Author has written 16 stories for Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, Forgotten Realms, Harry Potter, X-Men: Evolution, and Gravitation. Hello. I've been with writing on this site for a couple of years now, and I recently had it brought to my attention by Storm Pietro that there are very few original storylines out there. This is the reason for the following letter in my bio. If you agree with what the letter says, please copy it into an email message and send it to any friends you might have who write fanfiction. Sign your own name on the bottom. Thanks, here's the letter: Hello Friend. If you have any interest in the artform known as fanfiction, please continue reading this letter. If your sole interest on the topic lies in fanart, art, you may wish to read anyway. Over the years, fanfiction has evolved from a way to unleash your imagination and put yourself in the role of the author of your favourite book, movie, game, comic or television series, to a way to confine it. Rules have changed on the major site supporting our work, fanfiction.net. People have become afraid to write something they haven't seen before, for fear of their masterpiece being torn from its place on the Internet. We, Storm Pietro and Taineyah, decided to do something about it, when we noticed the problem on fanfiction.net, but we suspect that it is far more widespread. We are asking something very simple of you. We want to start this Originality Pact. What we ask you to do is to acknowledge that far too many stories contain similarities in plot and theory, that this annoys or bores you and to strive for originality in your own stories. This means that if you've seen it already, you can't write it yourself, unless you add a major twist. We ask you to copy and paste this into a new letter, complete with all signatures, and sign it yourself. Please, advertise the Originality Pact in your Author's Notes and keep a copy in order to send it to anyone who asks. We have to do something to preserve our chosen artform and method of hero worship. This seems like the best first step. Send this to friends, reviewers and fellow authors. It may be the difference between our artform dying for want of entertainment value, and having a lasting legacy of our stories and ideas. Thank you. I acknowledge the problem of unoriginal fanfiction and agree to assist in attempts to fix it, as listed above: Tainz the evil Authoress In conjunction with the Pact, and to try to give it more notoriety, I am now giving out "Originality Stickers" in reviews, asking people to check out the Pact. If you have been so honoured, understand that your story was the first of its type that I have seen on this site or anywhere else. Keep writing! |
