On Mates and Mating Instincts in the Twi-verse

So, I've noticed in a lot of the reviews i'm getting about the stories i write, that at lot of you are under a misapprehension about how 'mates' work in my stories.

Now this isn't exactly a bad thing, a lot of the ideas of how many of you think mating works has been perpetrated by other twilight fanfiction authors.

However, a lot of the tropes you see in other Twi fiction is not related to my stories at all. IE: love at first sight, destined mates, mystical mate pull/draw.

(what happens in Temp Tide isn't so much destiny as Novikov's self-consistency principal)

In my stories vampires fall in love just like we do.

There are people they are attracted to and people they aren't. Attraction does not guarantee love.

They don't have any special instinct telling them who their 'soulmate' is.

Sure they do have instincts in regard to who they eventually end up being mated to, but its mostly possessive/protective ones.

I do hold that vampire mating is almost 100% permanent, except for those rare occasions where one (or both) of the vamps does something irreconcilable.

In other words, vampire A could fall in love with person B, C, or D but who they actually end up mated to depends on luck and circumstance.

Basically, being mated is like being married in the Twiverse. It's not something that happens instantly, is ideally only something that happens after both parties fall in love and get to know eachother. It's definitely something that both parties have to agree to! Even if one party feels that they are mated to the other, it's not destiny, the other person has a choice.

I'll be happy to discuss this with anyone who has more questions.
