Author has written 3 stories for Superman. Let's clarify this off the top. It's Mr. Beeto now, since there was some gender confusion when I just went by Beeto. Obviously, my gender is male. Creative writing is a guilty pleasure for me, and has been for many years. Though writing has always come easy for me, I never really considered myself a writer, perhaps that'll change some day. My struggle is to keep from consuming all my time on it, which is especially challenging after a seeing a film or reading a story with great potential that the authors dropped the ball on. I like to see stories done right. Remember, the writing is the most important component of our favorite books, films and television shows. Sometimes, producers forget that, and try a special effects demo rather than worrying about the writing, assuming that the franchise will bring in the audience regardless. I also think that good fiction, even science fiction, should remain realistic. Even if we suspend disbelief to belief that a man can fly, it doesn't suspend the laws of physics for mere mortals. It takes a little more effort to do it right. I'm also a hopeful romantic (hopeless shipper), who likes to see the hero end up with his/her true love, and ride off into the sunset. (Yes, straight men can be romantic, too!) Mostly likely, my work will start off as Angst/Romance category, though there has to be drama to keep the story engaging. Drama isn't easy. Not for me at least. I'm also a stickler for staying true to the characters, even if you don't like them or if they are in the way. The characters have a deep history, in some cases running back for decades, and have loyal followings for a reason. To try to reinvent those characters to suit our purposes just because we can fails to respect the fandom. It is only recently that I've dared consider sharing my creativity -- I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks. We'll see how badly I get crucified as I start posting. Initially, I'll limit my creativity to Superman, which I'll define as the Donner/Singer SR Universe, and I'll try to keep it canon, for the most part. (I define 'canon' to mean the final cut of S-I, S-II, and SR and the four prequel comics; All other sources are suggestions). Some interesting AU ideas have popped into my head, but I'll endeavor to resist that temptation. Down the road, I may also articulate my story ideas in the StarGate SG-1 Universe, though I prefer the days before O'Neill got his stars and may insist on some AU divergences there after "Lost City" (parts I & II) or after "Grace." I also have some ideas for Star-Trek Enterprise, which was on its way to become the Best of Trek despite having some bad writers with too much influence, and I refuse to acknowledge "These are The Voyages" as part of the Star Trek canon. I also extend my special thanks to htbthomas for graciously offering to beta chapters of Home Is Where the Heart Is after she discovered me. Her beta of my chapters has made a big difference. She's also encouraged me to begin posting at LiveJournal in the superman_return community. I also need to thank Shado Librarian, for betaing my latest story, Family Reunion, and for her efforts at creating the Big Apricot Superman Movieverse FanFiction Forum. Wish me luck. For those who are curious: 'Beeto' came from a high-school nickname from my cross country teammates based on my first initial, 'B'. (Think "B-tow", which was a spin on Alberto, as in Alberto Salazar, marathon runner extraodinaire). 'B' stands for 'Brian'. It kind of encourages prolific writing, too. |
