Kagome woke up with a startled gasp. When all she saw was darkness, she made a frantic move for her eyes when a hand grasped her. Her immediate reaction was to scream but she was able to stop herself when she recognized the aura. Taking a few deep breaths, Kagome went limp in Levi's hold. When he gently let her go, Kagome pulled her knees to her chest and let her head rest on them. A few silent sobs escaped her as she reeled in all the overpowering emotions that filled her mind.

When she had calmed somewhat, he spoke, "Hn, still scared by nightmares at your age, Higurashi?"

Used to his attitude, Kagome managed a weak smile, "Y-Yeah… Silly, right? I-I'm sorry for waking you."

Her stuttering had the Lance Corporal staring at her intently. As if feeling his gaze, Kagome looked away and slumped her shoulders.

There was a pregnant pause before Levi sighed. Kagome felt the side of her bed dip before evening out, signaling that he had gotten out of her bed. The priestess caught herself before she could protest.

"Well, this is annoying. It's already dark."

Kagome scowled, "You say that as if you're blaming me!"

The priestess swore she could feel him raising an eyebrow at her. Huffing, Kagome crossed her arms, forgetting her initial distress, "Well excuse me, Levi, I wasn't the one who told you to sleep here! In fact, I distinctly remember having told you that you should go to your own room." There was another snort, "Ho? Then why do I feel like you don't want me to leave?"

Levi smirked as her face immediately flushed, satisfied that she had forgotten her little nightmare. He resisted the urge to chuckle as the woman began stammering. It was surprisingly amusing to see her fumble in embarrassment. It was definitely better than seeing her horrified expression.

When realization finally seemed to hit her, Kagome turned red with irritation, "W-Why you-! You're teasing me! I can't believe you! You're such a jerk, Levi!"

Her only answer was a noncommittal "Hn", infuriating her even more. However, before she could give the Corporal a piece of her mind, there was a loud grumbling noise. Then there was another round of silence. He watched in amusement as she blushed furiously. She wrapped her arms around her midsection as if it would cease the noises.

Deciding that she has been tormented enough, Levi dismissed the grumbling of her stomach gracefully, "I'll send Arlert down here to feed you."

He watched as she nodded shyly, the horrid blush staining her face spread all the way down to her neck. Smirking at the image, Levi wordlessly went out the room to make good on his word and grab something to eat for himself as well. Now that he was up, Levi decided that he should get some work done. He cursed. How he hated paperwork.

True to his word, Armin came knocking on her door a few minutes later. He had given the customary salute making her giggle. The rest of her evening was spent chattering with the boy amiably as he fed her. She was thankful for the fact that he was knowledgeable about most things. She found it endearing that he craved to learn more of the outside world.

"Eren, Mikasa, and I promised to go and see the oceans one day when we were kids… It seems so long ago now."

Kagome caught the sadness in his voice and held out her hand for him to take. She could feel his hesitation and smiled when he touched her, giving him a reassuring squeeze before letting his hand go again.

Armin blushed. It was not often that simple acts of kindness were given freely. He had only ever been comforted by his friends. And even then, none were as gentle as the woman before him.

Smiling slightly, Armin inwardly thanked whatever gods existed that they spared her life.

He hadn't once asked about her circumstances and he felt he didn't need to. This was enough.

"Well, Kagome-san, I think you should get some rest now. I will be back in the morning for your breakfast."

"Thank you, Armin-kun."

He gave her another salute before leaving the room.

Almost instantly, Kagome missed the company. Sighing, she leaned back on her headboard and got lost in her own musings.

It was simply too different from what she knew. A world overrun by human-like monsters… A shiver went up her spine. She remembered what Levi told her the other night about the Titans—how they had taken over the world and that what was left of humanity lived inside the walls. He had told her a whole bunch of things about them, making her queasy and nervous. Levi had to stop talking to help her calm down.

Kagome couldn't help it. Their distorted physiques were branded into her mind. They are the last things she will ever lay her eyes upon and they were more terrifying than any demon she had ever known. These were mindless creatures eating innocent people for no apparent reason. Kagome took a deep breath, trying to suppress another fit. She couldn't even think about them without wanting to vomit. How she had survived in the midst of all those creatures will forever remain a mystery to her.

Kagome sighed before placing a hand above her heart where the Jewel lay. Whatever the Titans were, she hoped that they had no interest in its power…

Kagome woke up the next day to loud shouts and furious stomping of feet. Orders were tossed left and right as hurried footsteps passed her room. Confused but alert, Kagome flared out her aura to search for the cause of the ruckus. She tried to fight down the overwhelming swirl of emotions from the people. Trying harder, she reached out further and further, stretching herself as far as she was able. She sensed something…strange a little further off but her concentration was cut short when someone burst into her room.

"Get up and let's go."

It was Levi.

Sensing the agitation in his calm voice had her scrambling out of bed. Levi was instantly beside her. He grabbed her arm firmly and began dragging her away. Kagome tried her best to keep up without tripping.

"What's going on?"

"Something appeared just a few miles away from here."

Kagome hissed as she stubbed her toe on something before resuming her sprint beside him, "A Titan?"

The blind woman squeaked in surprise when she was suddenly lifted off the ground, "You're too slow, Higurashi."

Kagome was about to retort when she noticed the suppressed worry in the Corporal's demeanor. His grip on her was a little too tight and his aura was agitated. The thundering footsteps grew fainted and she could only assume that he was taking her some place away from the fray. She was still a civilian, after all. Deciding to just let him carry her, Kagome fisted her hands on his chest and went back to what she was doing earlier.

Releasing another wave of her energy, Kagome swept through the grounds and noted that the strange presence was a lot nearer. It was familiar but, Kagome couldn't place her finger on it… It was getting closer and Kagome began to see it clearer. It was…

'That aura!'

"Take me outside!"

She could tell her sudden outburst startled the Corporal, "What are you fucking talking about?"

"I said take me outside, Levi! Now!" she said, hitting his chest.

"Are you an idiot? This isn't the time for fresh air, woman." He bit out, shooting her a fierce glare. Not that she would've seen it let alone be intimidated by it.

Kagome began to squirm violently in his hold, "Let go, you jerk!" She yelped when he suddenly dropped her. Bristling, Kagome got to her feet in record time and snarled at him.

A little taken aback by that particular reaction, Levi raised an eyebrow at her, "Mind telling me what the fuck is wrong with you?"

The priestess was about to tell him off when a roar resounded in the building, stunning both the Corporal and Kagome. She heard the man beside her curse.

Levi scowled when he heard the sound. In all his years of service, he had never heard that before. Glaring back at the blind woman, he spoke, "Get your shit straight, Higurashi, and don't do anything stupid. You should be fine here. Wait for either me or another soldier to get you."

He ignored her indignant cry and walked away briskly. He had a job to do.

However, what the Corporal failed to notice was that Kagome was as stubborn as they come. Just as soon as Levi was far enough, Kagome expanded her senses and sought out an alternative route.

After a few trips, falls, and bumps, Kagome found herself outside. Muttering under her breath, the priestess searched for that aura again. This time it was surrounded by the soldiers. Gritting her teeth, Kagome prayed she made it in time before Levi and the others decided to get rid of it.

Running with all her might to where she knew all the excitement was, Kagome ignored the painful stabs of rock under her feet. Letting her aura guide her, Kagome was able to reach the others just as another roar resounded in the area. She heard the shouts of the men as they prepared to strike the creature down.

Without another thought, Kagome rushed into the chaos and towards the owner of that familiar aura.

There were a string of 'who's and 'what's as she ran past the soldiers, frantically pushing them aside.

"What are you doing!?"

"Get back here! It's not safe!"

"Wait! Stop!"

Ignoring them, Kagome broke through the line of humans and immediately placed herself between them and the creature. She faced the soldiers and held out her hands, erecting a barrier around herself and the one behind her.

There was a collective cry of surprise as they all backed away.

Kagome held her ground determinedly despite the onslaught of fearful whispers and mutterings.

"What's happening!?"

"What is she?"

"Is this some sort of trick?"

"A civilian? Why weren't we informed of this?"

"Is she a threat?"

"Looks that way.."

"Someone call Corporal Levi and Commander Erwin!"

Kagome sighed. How was she supposed to explain this? She felt something soft brush her side. There was a soft purr and she directed a small smile to her old companion, "Well, you sure know how to make an entrance, Kirara."

Her only answer was a soft growl.
