Chapter 11.
Quietly, Galinda sneaked through the halls of the palace. The lights were dim and she could vaguely hear people talking a little further down the hall. She wondered where in the palace Anna could be, she could be anywhere. No other way to find out then to check all the rooms is there?
Elphaba was flying circles around the palace like a restless bird. Or that's what she thought it looked like. Anyone who'd saw her would have wondered, luckily no one was out in this bizarre cold weather. Still, to be sure she flew down to the ground, just outside the castle walls. Galinda would be safe inside the palace, if not… Elphaba shook her head. Of course Galinda would be safe, she of course had one or two tricks up her sleeve as well. Luckily the paths had been cleared of snow by the locals, still she had to be very cautious as to where to put her feet. She looked around, Elsa had frozen the entire fjord. She was, truly, powerful. Yet a gift she didn't know how to use. It reminded her of herself, perhaps that was the reason she so desperately wanted to help her out?
Iron scraping over floor, Elphaba perked up at the sound. No one was to be seen anywhere around, then it must have come from inside, sounds fleeting from an open window or something. She walked around the walls until she found what she was looking for. Narrow splits inside the wall, barred with iron. Part of the bars were frozen over, could be broken with ease. Her curiosity getting the best of her she crouched, as far as her outfit allowed her and peered between the bars, which were now on eye-level.
Frightened blue orbs stared right into chocolaty brown ones. Elsa shook her head, this wasn't the time to think about that. "Elphaba!" Elsa exclaimed in surprise. "Thank god you're here." "I don't think anyone has ever been this happy to see me. What in Oz's name happened?" Elsa looked down at her bound hands. After the falling chandelier she didn't remember much, she guessed the guards left her down here, shackled and all. Elphaba shook her head. "I should never have left. Don't worry, I'll get you out." Elsa smiled weakly and nodded, it was something of course.
Elphaba pulled her gloves off, immediately regretting the decision as the cold bit at her hands. The bars had to break. Open. Anything that could get Elsa out. Elsa looked up at Elphaba with a smile, over the course of the last few minutes the cuffs around her hands had frozen solid. Perhaps she could break them by slamming them against the floor.
At the same time she did so Elphaba was chanting a spell she recalled from her classed. They were supposed to work on doors, but it was worth a try. In a few minutes Elsa stood outside. There was snow, everywhere. Anna hadn't lied or exaggerated when she told her she covered the entire fjord, yet it still came as a shock to her. All of this was her fault, people were suffering because of her, of what she'd done.
Seeing the glazed over look on Elsa's face Elphaba waved a hand in front of her. "Are you alright? We should go. Quick." Elphaba reached for her broom. "I'll take you back to your castle, we can figure something out there… But wait, no, Galida's still in the palace- -" Elsa interrupted her hallway through her rants. "That's alright, you should go get Galinda, I'll head back to the mountain." She whispered weakly. Elphaba stopped, examining the girl in front of her closely. "Will you be alright?" "I'm sure I will."
"You see, I think that…" The enthusiastic Olaf at her feet continued its theories of how exactly it got back into the castle, Galinda rolled her eyes. Certainly that was not the most pressing issue at the moment. Suddenly the sound of rushed footsteps came through the hall and Galinda managed just in time to hide herself and Olaf in a nearby closet. When she stepped back out she saw a tall man stalking away. It wasn't hard to find out where he came from. Many of the doors in the hall were partly open, only one was locked. Then again, Olaf got that covered as well.
The two of them walked into a cold room, curious how the fireplace wasn't alight. Then Galinda saw her. "Sweet Lurline Anna!" She shrieked and in a split second helped the princess up. Anna was practically freezing! Carefully she led the poor girl over to the sofa near the fireplace while Olaf closed the door. "What on earth happened? Where's Hans?" Galinda asked worriedly, trying to warm the other girl up by rubbing her arms.
