(A/N Now for a new chapter update. Last chapter focused on where everyone was getting caught up, and now Kiki has learned that living on your own for a year isn't so easy as most thirteen year old witch's put it at that.
Its not so easy leaving home the first time, the little bird has to leave the nest sometime. Now for this chapter will focus entirely on Tombo, and I will be having a little contest here. The winner to guess correctly will be mentioned as the story progresses. Who will Tombo run into on his trip?
Take your guess, and I'll be here writing, now enough of me on with the story.)
Chapter 5: Pedal. Pedal, pedal...
All morning, Tombo has been pedaling his human-power plane, his clothes were soaked in sweat, lenses on his glasses fogged, and his tongue barely moistures.
"I wish I packed water before i left." panting for water.
The map he taped on the window declares he has reached two towns over, each town he travels takes about two hours. The average human-being can travel 31 mph, or 50km/h on a bicycle.
He marks the town with red marker, and draws a line, only three more towns to go, the circle he drew is the town Kariyaki, with Kiki's logo with little hearts all around. He smiles, he continues to pedal.
The weather outside was clear. No sign of rain, gushing wind, luck was on his side.
The sun was beating down on his face, no air conditioning was ever installed in the plane except for a little air from the duct. Neither option was helping, he looks down, and there's a small village he can land for the time being, buy some water, food, and other necessities for the trip.
The compass points northwest, the wind was blowing 15 miles an hour. He pedals to circle the plane and slows down, pedal, then slow down again. It's not easy landing a human power plane, which he has done twice. He pulls on the breaks as he lands on a hill. A farmer tending his sheep looks over the horizon, the sheep with their small legs run to the other side.
"BAWHH! cried the sheep.
Tombo lands the plane, and pulls on the break. He gets off the bike, and opens the door to stretch out his legs and arms, especially his back. CRRACK! went his spine.
He feels a sense of cold feeling come up his spine, legs and arms. A farmer signaling him waves from his fence post.
Tombo turns around and waves back,"Hey there!"
The farmer shakes his head, he unlatches the gate, and walks down the hill where Tombo made his landing.
"Young man! I was not waving hello." imitating his hand earlier."I was calling why have you landed your plane on my homeland."
A brainfart goes off in his brain, Tombo shakes his head to clear his thoughts,"Sorry Mr. Farmer sir, but I have landed because I have not packed any food or water for the long trip to Kariyaki."
The farmer makes a face,"Where are you from if I may ask?"
"From Koriko, about 3 or 4 towns over by the shore of the ocean, its a great city."
The man takes off his hat to fan his face."I have heard of the town, but why are you traveling on a human-plane and land on my property without my permission?"
Tombo pushes his glasses as they fell to his nose,"You see, a girl of a friend of mine is a witch, and to make a long story short, I am flying to her to beg for my apologies."
He turns red with embarrassment as he scratches the back of his head,"Please forgive me for landing on your property, If you want me to push it somewhere else, I would be gladly to do so."
The farmer makes a groan the back of his throat, he listens to Tombo's story. The girl of a friend caught his attention. It was obvious the boy was in love. Love can be strange sometimes, he thought.
The farmer puts his hand on Tombo's shoulder,"Listen here boy, I can whip you up with supplies from my home. I appreciate the honesty, don't worry about moving your plane, at least you didn't damage my field of corn. It's to pay my debts."
Tombo looks around, there was a whole field of corn. Thank goodness he didn't land or fly over to tear apart the whole bushel of corn.
Tombo's mouth drops, the whole hill was full of gold pure corn. A giant bumblebee swarms over his ears. Tombo swooshes his hands over his ears. Why do bugs try to go in your ears? The bee flies to the corn, inspects it, see to spread pollen to make the plant grow and leave some for itself to make honey.
Tombo bows,"Thank you sir, I have quite a few yen to buy supplies in the village."
The farmer holds up his hand to stop him, shaking his head."No son, it's the least I can do. Come in and have lunch. My wife is cooking a stew that'll warm you up."
Tombo scratches his head, the glasses slide off his eyes and unto his nose again,"I don't know, its it a bother I can."
The farmer takes him by the shoulder and leads him up the hill to his house."It's no trouble after you eat, I'll whip you up supplies for your trip. Consider it help from a neighbor."
Tombo nods, his stomach growls. How long has it been since breakfast? The sun dial says its about noon. Tombo and the farmer walk ion the house, as Tombo looks around, the farmer removes his hat to hang on the wall.
"You sure have a nice home."
"Thank you, it built by my grandfather."
Tombo spots a picture, it must be the farmer's family. He takes the picture from the den and admires the picture. The farmer walks to him, and looks at the picture. A sad-smile comes in.
"That's my boy, and my little girl." pointing to the picture.
"Where are they now?" asked Tombo.
"They're grown. My boy's off in the army. My girl, she's married now. Has two children."
Tombo smiles,"Have they come down and visit?"
The Farmer takes the picture, and puts it back in it's place,"I rather not talk about it. Now let's eat before stew gets cold or we'll be starving till supper time."
Tombo, the farmer and his wife sit down on their knees eating a bowl of soup with a cup of rice on the side. Tombo with his chopsticks slips down the noodles. He eats three bowls of soup, the farmer's wife chuckles.
Tombo stops slurping, the wife lets out a little chuckle,"No worries dear, there's plenty of more. So tell us, what is this girl like? She sounds like a wonder.
Tombo sets his bowl, wipes his mouth with a handkerchief, and starts explaining,"She's the most amazing girl that ever flew into my life. She's a witch."
The farmer frowns,"That's not quite nice to call a girl a witch."
Tombo snorts,"No I don't mean to insult her like calling her wicked, she's actually a real flying witch. Excluding what we read from books."
The farmer and his wife ."Ooh."
"We never had a witch before, far as we've known. From what we heard from passengers, aw yes, a witch from the city of Koriko, that must be your fellow citizen, and another one not too far from here."
"Wow Miss-"
"Kyoki." she bows.
"Mrs. Kyoki, are you saying there are other witches?"
Mrs. Kyoki thinks it over for a minute,"Well from what we heard, there must be more. If your thinking about if he or she has the same skill as your girl, I mean every person is different."
Tombo turns his head, looking at his human-airplane,"I never thought about there be other witches, I mean I wished I could of asked if Kiki, that's her name, if other witches have other types of skills."
Mrs. Kyoki takes the empty bowls of stew, and sets them to wash in the bin,"Well, it's likely you'll run into one. Kiki, you say, that's very pretty name."
He blushes,"She's one of a kind, she saved me last summer when the Spirit of Freedom Blimp got loose with the big wind, I thought I was atoner, then she flew with her broom, and caught me when i couldn't hold onto the rope."
They gasp,"We heard about that on the radio."
"You did? Wow, we must be famous then." showing his muscles.
They laugh, the farmer slaps the back of his back,"Boy, you sure are a clown."
Tombo recalls what Kiki thought when she first met him,"My mom says the same thing, Don't be such a clown, quit looking up at the sky and get back to your books."
Mrs. Kyoki crosses her legs to sit down,"Well, we're glad you're all right. She was so brave. I hope we get to meet one like her someday."
Tombo looks at the wall clock,"Well." standing up and bowing to them,"I must be going, thank you for the lunch. If we have the time to stop along the way maybe you'll get to meet her."
Mr. Kyoki stands up from the table,"We be happy for you to stay overnight, you don't want to tire yourself out before you get to meet her."
Tombo turns back,"I have to make things right again, I would gladly take the offer but I need to go to her, and say my apologies for forgiveness."
frowns, What is it that you have done?" he asked.
Tombo turns to hide his shame,"To make a long story short, I thought she was never coming back to Koriko, and other things I should of never said. I hurt her, but never again will I doubt her again."
Mr. Kyoki puts his arm on his shoulder, startling Tombo,"I'm sure all will work out in the end. Let my wife and I pack you some supplies so you can be prepared on the way. Honey."
Mrs. Kyoki climbs up the ladder to the attic, packs apples, cheese, bread, Pocki, fresh deviled-eggs, and bottles of water. She wraps them neatly in a big cloth.
She hands Tombo the cloth, he takes it in his hand, and they both bow. "Thank you so much, I don't know what I would of done without you and Mr. Kyoki."
She lays her hands on the cloth of food,"It's no problem at all. No go to your Kiki before it's too late. Go! Shoo!"
Tombo chuckles,"Thank you so much. Goodbye!"
He packs the food by the bike in the human-plane, before he gets in to shut the door, the farmer Mr. Kyoki calls for him to wait.
"Hold on son, wait!" He rushes real quick before Tombo takes off.
He stops for a minute to catch his breath, a man in his late forties is getting up in age with tired legs."Here I want you to have this."
Tombo takes the token from his hand, a token made of pure gold carved from the mines with the flag of Japan, on the back carved the symbol of peace, with an arrow shaped like a heart.
Tombo studies the token,"Oh! Its-he hesitates- I don't what to say. Why are you giving me this?"
He takes off his hat to show Tombo what special meaning the token has to him,"My daughter got it for me when she married and moved out. The meaning behind the coin is although she doesn't need us anymore, she'll always be our daughter no matter where she is. I want you to have it, to show never to forget who you are. Because my wife and I trust her. Keep it to remind you everyone falls in love differently, but you never forget the people who love and appreciate you."
Tombo tucks the coin in front pocket,"I don't know what to say sir. Thank you."
They bow, and say their final goodbyes.
Tombo pedals the bike, the plane rolls down the hill, and zoooom!
The plane ties off in the air, Tombo pedals to circle the house, to thank again how grateful he ran into them. Mr. Kyoki waves goodbye .
"Good luck!"
With a full stomach, hydrated, Tombo's feet pedals as he flies over small villages. Just a couple more miles to go, and he'll be seeing Kiki again.
Tombo smiles to himself, heart pumping with excitement, but it turns upside down. What if Kiki won't return what he did to her? What if she doesn't want to speak to him again?
He shake his head. "No, her and i went through ups and downs, we got through it together."
He pushes the negative thoughts away, and keeps peddling, he wipes the sweat from his forehead. He looks down at the ground, a little worry comes to his head. He has never been to Kiki's town nor has ever left the city. He can follow maps very well, but that was a city map, not a travel map.
The travel taped to the window marks he must fly over the small villages then to the town, followed by other small villages. How small was her hometown. Was it a village? A town?
The sound of thunder catches his attention. He forgets all about finding Kiki's town, according to the compass pointing north, thlouds and the smell or rain is in the air.
Tombo gulps. He never flew his plane in this kind of weather before.
"Oh boy! No, please no."
(A/N Sounds like Mother Nature is coming in, and by the looks of the sky, he's going in for a turn. I had a lot of fun writing this chapter, Tombo can be a little cuckoo, and can let almost anything go to his head. I'll see you next chapter. Leave me reviews.)
