Magic of Christmas

The countryside was covered in snow. The light, fluffy kind that fell with a softness that you could almost hear, making the sounds of the evening soft and muffled, creating a peacefulness that only seemed to happen at this time of year.

The Captain and Carolyn stood on the porch of Gull Cottage watching quietly as the landscape became covered in its white crystal blanket. He was dressed in a warm, dark turtleneck, and black trousers, and she was in sweats and a warm green shirt. Both had on ugly Christmas sweaters.

He held her within his arms as she leaned back against his comforting embrace.

"These sweaters are terrible," she said.

"Hideous," he agreed, brushing his lips across the back of her neck.

Carolyn turned to face him and giggled against his chest. "I think Martha may have picked these out intentionally when she took the kids shopping." She paused. "Or as she explained to me, it gets us all in the proper Christmas mood. Then she laughed as she walked away."

"She would do that? Knowing that we would be obliged to wear them?"

Carolyn gave him a pained smile. "'fraid so."

"Why that conniving, devious, little…housekeeper," he sputtered.

Carolyn leaned into him and giggled. "She would be happy that you called her little."

"Yes, well," the Captain tried to appear dour, but he couldn't quite keep his mouth from quirking into a smile. "I suppose we will be forced to wear these for many of the Christmas festivities."

"Yes, for a few anyway. And you will have to wear it out in public now that people know I am a married woman."

He made a grumbling noise and pulled her close again. "If it will make the children happy then I suppose I must be a good father and put up with the ugly sweater."

She giggled against him again, and his deep rumbling chuckles soon joined hers as they laughed together.

"I do apologize, am I interrupting something?" a deep voice inquired from the porch behind them.

Startled, the couple jumped apart as if burned and turned to stare at the portly man dressed in white robes with gold symbols, leaning on a large staff which was curled at the top.

"Saint Nicholas!" Carolyn shrieked in delight and ran over to the older man. She hugged him and then kissed his cheek, which left his cheeks ruddy and joy in his face.

"My dear girl, I'm so glad it all worked out for you."

"So am I." She paused holding his hands in hers as Daniel wandered over behind her. "And none of it would have happened without you." She searched his eyes and he could see the depth of sincerity there. "Thank you."

"My pleasure, Mrs. Gregg." He looked slightly embarrassed as he stepped out of Carolyn's grasp and reached out to shake Daniel's hand.

"Nicholas," the Captain greeted him. "Good to see you."

"And you." The Captain cocked his head. "I am not certain that I know the purpose for you visit as we are not yet to the Christmas holiday."

"Can't I come by and visit some of my favorite mortals."

Daniel cast a not quite suspicious eye at him. "I suppose."

Nicholas emitted a hearty laugh and the other two grinned in good humor.

"But I do have a purpose to tonight's visit."

"Ah, hah!" the Captain pointed a finger at him.

"Daniel, calm down."

"It is only to give you early notice that I will need to avail myself of your services this Christmas."

"What services?"

"You will be my main assistant."

"What does that mean?"

"I'll let you know when it's time to go."

"Hmmm," the Captain frowned.

"And congratulations on your new addition to the family. I hear she's beautiful."

"Oh, Nicholas, you have no idea. Her beauty surpasses the rising of the sun, the vastness of the ocean, she…"

Carolyn clamped a hand over his mouth in good natured amusement. "I'm afraid my husband is quite enamored of his daughter."

The Captain removed her hand and gave her a playful look before he turned back to the older man. "As I have every right to be. She. Is. Beautiful."

"I'm glad everything worked out." He paused for a long moment before speaking. "There is a bit of information I wished to impart to you about the nature of your child."

"The nature of our child?" Carolyn inquired. What does that mean?"

"I don't think it's anything to be alarmed about, just something you should know. Hmm, how to best put this? It seems that even though Daniel was for all practical purposes a human when you conceived the child, the truth is that he's still a spirit."

"And?" Daniel demanded.

"That means the child is not completely human, she has spiritual elements within her."

"She'll have some of Daniel's abilities?"

Nicholas shrugged. "I don't know, but if she fusses when you feel she should be quiet, if she doesn't want to eat things, it may because of her dual nature. Or she may not be affected at all. I only tell you because I thought it would be helpful for you to know this."

"Thank you," Carolyn said.

"You're most welcome." He paused. "And that may have contributed to the difficulty you had with her birth."

"Would I have the same problem if we had another child?"

"Maybe? From what I understand about the mortal world, it is not uncommon for a woman to have easy deliveries, and then a difficult one? And vice versa? It is not my area of expertise, but my belief is that if anything, it was a minor complication."

"Minor? Minor!" Daniel began to sputter in outrage, but Carolyn laid her hand on his arms silencing him.

"That means I can have more children?" she asked, ignoring the Captain's scowl.

"That is not for me to say. I am not a physician." He stepped forward and took Carolyn's hands in his and gave them a squeeze. "I wish only the best for you and your family. I've grown quite fond of you."

"Even Daniel?" she smiled coyly over her shoulder.

"Here now!' he protested.

"Yes, even Daniel." He nodded at the Captain. "Enjoy your family. I'll be back just before Christmas Eve to collect you and put you to work."

The Captain inclined his head in agreement. "As you wish."

And with a last smile for them, Saint Nicholas was gone, and they were left to the surrounding quiet of the falling snow.

8888888888888888888888888888888

It was later that evening, Candy and Jonathan were down in the kitchen having hot chocolate with Martha while the new parents tended to their three months old daughter. Carolyn watched as the Captain walked the breadth of the room, a burp rag, and the infant on his shoulder as he encouraged her to burp having finished her meal just a short time before.

Carolyn offered to do the task, but Daniel waved her off as he seemed to take particular enjoyment out of getting his small daughter to burp. He gently patted her back and was rewarded with a rather loud sound which brought a smile to his face. He leaned his head back and looked at his daughter who was happily waving her small fists in the arm.

"That is my girl. That was a very healthy sound you produced. Very good, my child. Very good indeed."

Carolyn went over to his side and peered at the lovely face that was a combination of the two of them. "You are actually encouraging your daughter to burp?"

"She needs to do it and it is good for her. At least right now." He paused. "I shall nip this behavior in the bud as she grows older, but for now…" his face scrunched up as he brought his face close to the small girl's, "you are my beautiful little girl. You are Daddy's girl, aren't you? My sweet child." He gently rubbed his nose against hers and Caitlin squealed with glee.

Carolyn laughed. "You're hopeless."

"Let me be hopeless. We both deserve it."

"I can't argue that." She tickled her daughter's tummy. "She's amazing. I'm so glad we have her. Not bad for an unplanned pregnancy."

"That goes without saying." He was still enthralled with this tiny daughter and didn't notice Carolyn sidling up to him to link her arm in his.

"I am getting older, Daniel."

The Captain spared her an encouraging glance. "You are still beautiful, my love."

"There is a point to me saying this."

"And what might that be?" He lowered his face down to his daughter and she grabbed his nose with her tiny hands. "What might be the point to what Mommy is saying, my little one? Why do we care if she is a few days older?"

"It would be a shame for her to be the only little one. I mean, there's such an age gap between her and the older kids."

"Uh, huh," the Captain agreed.

Carolyn leaned forward and whispered into his ear. "I'd like to have another child, Daniel."

"Uh, huh. Did you hear that baby girl?" he said is a silly baby voice. "Mommy said she want to have another child, another beautiful baby like you." He blinked as the idea finally registered in his mind and he straightened and looked at Carolyn. "You what?"

She only smiled.

"No. Absolutely not. Under no circumstances will I allow that to happen again."

"It's not your call, is it?"

The Captain sputtered, trying to quell his anger so as not to disturb his daughter who was still gurgling happily in his arms. "I do have some say in the matter," he said in a knowing voice." Without my help there cannot be another child."

"You'd give up sex to prove a" point?" Carolyn stepped away and crossed her arms in front of her.

"If need be, then yes!" his voice rose in agitation and the happy baby suddenly started crying.

Carolyn reprimanded him with a look and retrieved the child from him. He trailed after her as she walked the length of the room and back, gently rocking the baby until she quieted a few minutes later. She nodded at the bassinet in the room and Daniel lifted the small baby blanket and she laid the baby down. He then placed the blanket around the drowsing infant, making sure she was tucked in and warm.

The Captain stood up and looked over at Carolyn who directed him out of the room and into the hallway with a point of her finger.

The two left the room and quietly shut the door behind them.

Once in the corridor, the Captain assumed a stubborn stance and folded his arms in front of him. "No."

"Daniel, at least consider it. Look at the age difference between the children. When Caitlin is ten, Jonathan will be twenty, and Candy will be twenty-four. They will be living lives of their own."

The Captain remained quiet, but his eyes softened a bit.

"I believe it's better to grow up with a sibling, children learn so much more that way."

The Captain cleared his throat and unfolded his arms. "I would not object to having another child with you if I knew that you would be safe and that no harm would befall you." He stepped across the hall to her and tenderly lifted her chin so that her eyes met his. "It is selfish of me, but I will not risk your health for the sake of another child. It was a near thing this time." He dropped his hand, and his gaze dropped to the floor. "I cannot bear to lose you. No matter what," he finished with a whisper.

"Daniel," she said and stepped within his arms, hugging him close. "I love you so." She kissed his cheek. "But life goes on. We don't have to decide now, tonight. I should still have a few years left, but if we decide to have another child, I don't want to wait too long."

He grumbled something incoherent under his breath.

"Can we agree to disagree for now?" she lifted his chin so that he met her gaze.

He nodded. "I see your points, but I do not agree, at least not at this moment. But I do see that disturbing as it is, this may warrant further discussion." He sighed. "After Christmas though?"

"Yes, that will be fine." She leaned in and placed a sweet kiss on his lips. "Thank you, dear."

"You are welcome, my darling." He pulled her close and kissed her again, gazing into her warm green eyes. "I suppose we should go downstairs and join in the drinking of the Hot Chocolate."

"A fine idea."

Daniel glanced back at the door of the Master Suite and frowned.

"She'll be fine. The baby monitor is on and we can come back in half an hour to check on her."

"You are sure?"

"Positive." She smiled at him. "I've done this a couple of times before."

He chuckled. "How do you do it? My God, woman. I had no idea that being a parent to a baby was such a difficult thing."

"Men seldom do."

"Carolyn!"

Laughing, she linked her arm in his and they descended the stairs to the warm laughter of the children downstairs in the kitchen.

8888888888888888888888888888888

It was a week before Christmas and the family had just finished dinner, it had just started snowing and the forecast was for it to continue overnight.

The older kids were getting dressed to go play outside in the snow, and they had coerced the Captain join them. Jonathan was excited as he was looking forward to ambushing the Captain with snowballs. Candy was a bit less enthusiastic about being pelted with snowballs, but it beat being stuck in the house.

The group of three escaped to the yard with Carolyn watching from the porch. Martha had elected to remain in the house with the baby. She sat on the porch swing and watched her family stomp out into the snow and before she could blink, Jonathan had packed a snowball and with an amazingly accurate aim, nailed the Captain in the chest.

The Captain roared and Jonathan froze for just a moment, until he realized the Captain was running at him, snowball in hand. Jonathan laughed and ran in a different direction as the Captain fired snowballs at him. Candy stood quietly, but with deadly aim hit the Captain's back as he ran after Jonathan. He stopped, straightened up and shot an amused look of challenge at her. She shrieked as the Captain altered his course and began to chase her.

Jonathan saw what was transpiring and tackled the Captain from behind, forcing him to the ground. The older man laughed and rolled over as the boy scrambled on top of him and started shoveling snow on his father. Candy joined in the merriment and soon the kids were working on burying the Captain in snow, much to the glee of all.

The laughter was contagious, and Carolyn found herself giggling at the predicament of her husband as the children tussled with him in the snow. It was a heartwarming sight and unable to help herself, she raced to the kids and joined them in shoveling handfuls of snow on the semi-buried Captain.

"Mom?" Candy smirked. "Are you going to help us bury Dad in the snow?"

"You bet," she smirked at the Captain's amused by incredulous expression.

"That is how you treat your husband?" the Captain growled.

"Damn straight," she said and lifted his shirt from his neck and stuffed snow against his naked chest.

He gasped and then reached for her, but she squirmed away. He wriggled out of the children's grasp and got to his feet to pursue his now fleeing wife. She laughed as he playfully chased her but was tackled by Candy and Jonathan, slowing him enough that Carolyn tackled him to the ground.

She rested on his chest; her face full of laughter as she looked into his happy blue eyes.

"And now what do you intend to do?" he growled in an amused voice.

"So many choices."

"Are you going to stuff my shirt with more snow?"

"There are other places I could put the snow."

"You wouldn't dare!"

She raised an eyebrow, hearing the challenge in his voice.

"Maybe later," she said as the kids caught up to them and she rolled off him.

His hearty laughter filled her ears as she retreated to the porch and let the rest of her family finish their play.

8888888888888888888888888888888

An hour later the family was shaking the snow off their wet clothes and stomping it out of their boots on the porch. They were all chuckling and teasing each other as the snow began to fall in earnest.

The Captain shook himself off and pulled the kids to him, hugging them tightly. They hugged him back and he waved Carolyn over to them.

"We're having a group hug?" Candy inquired. "That's so uncool," she said but didn't move away.

"You're a great Dad," Jonathan said as the hug broke up. "I always knew you would be."

They shook off their coats again and moved towards the door when they heard a commotion behind them. They all turned to look and saw a golden glowing orb amid the snow. The orb expanded and became human sized and then larger, glittering brightly in a way that seemed magical.

"He certainly does know how to make an entrance, doesn't he?" Carolyn murmured.

"Saint Nick?" Candy asked.

"Who else?" the Captain agreed with a sigh.

"Excellent!" Jonathan said.

The glittering bubble moved closer to the porch and then popped, its golden glittering flakes merging with the falling snow, creating a beautiful sight.

"Oh, cool!" Candy and Jonathan chorused.

Saint Nicholas solidified before them, in his formal wear. A long white hooded robe with handcrafted golden stitching, tall white hat and a golden curved cane. He smiled at the family, bowed, and miraculously the hat didn't fall from his head.

"It is good to see you all." He offered them a smile filled with warmth.

"Stop being so dramatic," the Captain said with good humor.

"What? You didn't like my entrance?"

"I thought it was cool!" Jonathan said.

"Smart lad," Nicholas said, stroking his long white beard.

"I liked it too," Candy said, not wanting to be left out.

"And you are a very smart young lady." He indicated Daniel and Carolyn. "They are very lucky to have you as their children." He paused. "And you are very lucky to have them as parents."

The family looked at each other and smiled.

"We know that," Carolyn said.

Nicholas frowned as he looked at them. "You're all wet."

"We've been playing in the snow," Jonathan said.

"And it looks like you've been doing a fine job." Nicholas chuckled deeply and the rest of the family couldn't help but smile at each other.

"Forgive me, Nicholas, but why are you here? It's a week before Christmas," the Captain said.

"Yes, Daniel. Time to get started."

"Started? For Christmas?"

"Yes, of course." He put his hands on his hips and looked affronted. "You don't really believe the stories that say this is all done overnight, do you?"

The Captain held up a hand. "Wait. What?"

"Where do you think those stories about Santa Claus flying around the world and delivering toys came from?"

"Err…you?"

"Exactly so. And believe me, that cannot be accomplished in only one night."

The Captain exchanged a questioning look with his wife. "You actually deliver toys to children?"

"Yes, yes, whatever is needed. Sometimes it is food, sometimes money, whatever it is that will improve their lives."

"And you do this for all the world's children?"

"Yes, of course. And it's a lot of work, that's why I need a helper."

"Me?"

"You. I've had various other assistants, but now it's your turn." He offered the Captain his most charming smile. "And we had best get going."

"But it is a week before Christmas."

"There is a lot to do." He gave the Captain a look of reproof. "You promised, Daniel."

The Captain appeared affronted. "I will honor my word I am just surprised by the timing, that's all. It means I'll be gone from my family for a week. From Caitlin." His expression grew sad.

"Daniel, we'll be fine. You'll be fine," Carolyn said looping her arm through his. "Go help him. He's done a lot for us."

"All right. Yes, of course." He paused. I need to say goodbye to Caitlin before I leave."

"I would not prevent you from doing that. Go and do that. I will amuse the children while you're gone."

The Captain nodded and departed as he saw the older man pull candy from his pockets and hold it out for the kids. They looked at each other happily and politely took the candy from his hands.

8888888888888888888888888888888

The Captain returned to the porch fifteen minutes later, dressed in a winter coat and smiling happily. He went over first to Candy, and then to Jonathan, exchanged a few words with them, and hugged them both. Then he went over to Carolyn. They stared into each other's eyes, lost for a few moments before they shared a lingering kiss. Bemoaning having to watch their parents' smooch in front of them, they rolled their eyes and turned away.

Saint Nicholas shook his head and laughed. "Daniel, it's only a week. Nothing more."

He parted from Carolyn and with a few more murmured words, he placed a gentle kiss on her brow and then stepped away. He turned back to Saint Nicholas. "I am ready."

Saint Nicholas shook his head. "Ah, you young people. You are nowhere near ready, my lad."

"What do you mean? I am dressed and ready to go. I am only awaiting your instructions."

"Don't be offended Daniel, but I need you to appear differently. It helps to perpetuate the myth, you see."

"What are you talking about?"

Nicholas gave him a patient smile. "It is far easier to show you. Are you ready?"

"For what?" the Captain asked suspiciously.

"For this!" The Saint's eyes twinkled with mischief and there was a cloud of deep glitter than encompassed the Captain. When it dissipated seconds later, it appeared the Captain was gone and in his place was a short man with reddish brown hair, dressed in green pants and vest with red trim, and wearing red boots.

The family's jaws dropped with a collective thud.

"Captain?" Jonathan squeaked out. "Is that you?"

"Oh my God!" Candy covered her mouth and giggled. "Too funny."

"Daniel?" Carolyn was trying very hard not to laugh.

The small elvish looking man put his hands on his hips and glared at the lot of them. "What are you laughing at? What is the matter with you?" A look of horror crossed his face as he realized the timbre of his usually deep voice had risen a couple of octaves. "Oh, no. What is the matter with me?" He looked down at himself and his attire and realized that he was looking up at everyone else. He turned to Nicholas who had an amused smile on his face. "You did this to me?"

"Yes, I did. Oh, don't worry, it's only temporary. As I said, it enhances the image."

"Blast! How dare you! I said I would help but not that I would consent to such a ridiculous appearance!"

"I think it's part of the costume, Dad," Jonathan smirked.

"Yeah. Besides, you look cute!" Candy was biting the inside of her cheeks to prevent laughing in his face.

The Captain turned to his wife to plead his case. "Carolyn!"

She couldn't help herself, she burst into laughter.

The small elvish version of the Captain stomped to the gate in a huff, clearly annoyed. "This is utterly ridiculous!" he declared in a childlike voice. "Blast!" he swore and the group behind him laughed. He gave a large sigh and turned back to face Nicholas, his face a carefully controlled mask of anger. "Is this really necessary?"

"I'm afraid so. If they think you're an elf or some such thing, then they would never believe you're a spirit. If you appeared as the handsome, manly spirit that you are, there would be someone that would realize it and find a way to investigate, possibly finding your identity. This way there is no chance of that. You are Santa's helper."

Daniel glared at him but nodded. "Very well. Can we get started then? The sooner we begin this the sooner I can get home and be my normal self." He cast a suspicious look at the older man. "I will return to my normal self, won't I?"

"Rest assured, my boy. As soon as we are done and you return home, it will your normal appearance. It's all an illusion anyway."

"Very well," the smaller version of Daniel agreed and folded his arms in front of him. He glared at his family. "Not a word."

They all nodded their heads in agreement but could not look at one another as they desperately tried not to laugh.

"All right. Let's make it official, then." Nicholas said. He turned, waved his hand again causing another large area to be covered with a golden glittering mass, and when the shimmering cloud had disappeared, a large sleigh sat outside the yard hitched to several large reindeer.

"Wow!" Jonathan gasped. "You really are Santa Claus!"

"This is wonderful! You really do exist!" Candy kept looking between the sleigh and Nicholas.

"No, I am Saint Nicholas." He raised his eyebrows in superiority. "Santa Claus is modelled after me. It makes people happy, so I allowed it to perpetuate." He gave them all a happy smile and slapped the Captain on the back. "Time to make children happy. Come along, Daniel."

Casting a last helpless look over his shoulder, he jumped into the sleigh beside Nicholas. The older man nodded at the family still watching from the porch, shook the reins, and the deer and sleigh lifted from the ground and in an instant, disappeared into the snow filled night.

8888888888888888888888888888888

The week had been magical, there was just no other word for it, Daniel thought, as he stood in front of Gull Cottage. The time he spent with Saint Nicholas had been a revelation. He truly was a Saint in all sense of the word. They had spent the week bringing food and money to the poor, and toys to the children. It had not been to all the children of the world because that was a nearly impossible task, but a great many had received the benefit of his benevolence.

Most of the time they had snuck in and out of the home without anyone being any the wiser, but on a couple of occasions, they had met someone, usually a child, that had spied them at work. The kindness, and compassion of Nicholas had been beyond anything he had experienced. What had been a pleasant chore turned into an enlightening experience, one he was glad to have had.

And now it was very early Christmas morning, and he was home. The night was clear, the stars were out, and he was so grateful for all that he had. He wiped a stray tear from his face and found that he didn't care in the least that it was there. He had so much when just six short years ago he had nothing but fear and a dilapidated empty house. Now he had a beloved wife, three wonderful children which included his beloved infant daughter.

He was convinced his entire existence led to this point in time and had things gone differently, he would be a vengeful spirit doomed to an existence of pain and longing. He let that ominous thought go and straightened up, reminding himself of what he had and what he had to look forward to. He smiled to himself and with a wave of his hand, disappeared from the walk.

The Captain appeared in Candy's room first to find her sleeping, her head under the covers except for her forehead. A fond smile on his face, he placed a soft kiss on her forehead. She sighed and turned over on her side. He waved his hand again and disappeared.

Jonathan was sleeping sprawled across his bed, limbs askew, on his stomach. The Captain chuckled quietly to himself, the lad had always been a messy sleeper and it didn't appear that was going to change as he was getting older. He did the same thing as he had done with Candy and placed a soft kiss on the boy's forehead and disappeared.

The last place he appeared was the Master Bedroom.

He stood quietly and reveled in the sight of Carolyn peacefully sleeping on the bed, on her back and quietly snoring. He had never told her that, of course, but she did snore. He found it quite endearing.

Next to the bed was the bassinet. His baby girl was in there, softly fussing as she grew drowsy with sleep. He went over and let her grasp one of his large fingers, marveling at the sight of her. She grew more beautiful every day, just like her mother. As with the others, he dropped a tender kiss on the forehead of the baby girl. She fussed a little bit but closed her eyes.

With great care, so as not to wake his sleeping wife, he removed his clothes and stripped down to his boxers. He slid in beside her and was pleased when she rolled on her side and snuggled into his embrace.

"You're back," she mumbled.

"What? Why are you awake?"

"Caitlin was fussy. Is she asleep now?"

"Out like a light, my love."

"Good. But you're not cute anymore."

"Oh," the Captain remembered her reference from a week earlier, "you mean the costume."

"Mmm, yes, that." She paused. "You're back to your normal alluring, sexy self. Definitely not cute."

The Captain chuckled. "I hope you can live with that." He placed a series of kisses along her neck and Carolyn sighed in contentment. "Missed you, Daniel." She turned in his arms and faced him.

"And I missed you," he whispered, and proved the point by kissing her long and slow.

Carolyn kissed him back, and they gazed at each other, lost in the love they had for one another. They spent the next several minutes exploring the nuances of each kiss as though it was the first, as though they had never kissed before. When they took a break, they put their foreheads together for a moment.

She raised an eyebrow, feeling his desire against her.

"It is Christmas, isn't it?"

"Aye, love, it most certainly is. But if you are not willing, I will not hold it against you."

Carolyn sighed. "But Daniel, you are holding it against me."

"What? Oh, I see. You are being witty."

"Obviously not enough." She pressed herself against the length of his body, making her intention very clear. "Husband, I am ready and willing." She blew into his ear and felt him shiver. "Are you?"

"You hardly need to ask, do you, my love?" he growled softly as he removed his boxers and pinned her underneath him. "Ready, wife?"

"Umm, yes." She stretched against him and he began to nibble at her neck…

8888888888888888888888888888888

The snow continued to fall blanketing the countryside around Gull Cottage.

A lone figure in a white robe with gold trim looked up at the window of the Master Suite and smiled to himself. With a wave of his hand, presents sparking and wrapped appeared in the living room under the Christmas tree and he nodded in satisfaction.

"Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night," then with a smile, and a soft clap of his gloves, he disappeared into the softness of the falling snow.
