HI EVERYONE! Sorry for the delay, but I am finally back with a new chapter! I hope you are all as excited for this one as I am Enjoy! And I'd love to know what you think of it xxx
Rose's POV
I jump up and give a small shriek.
'For heaven's sake.' I let out and I walk towards the window to slowly push my curtains apart. It's then who I notice standing on my balcony and I quickly open the door tears still glistering in my eyes.
'Jack. Wha… what are you doing… How did you manage to come up here… I… I…'
He shuts me up by kissing me passionately. I act in an instant and kiss him back with all the love I am able to give him in this moment. Jack is the first one to pull back and smiles at me widely.
'I begged Anne to give me your address and I climbed up to your balcony. I kind of had to use my Romeo skills to manage myself up here.'
I smile at him. 'You are crazy, Jack.'
I laughs at me but stops immediately when he looks at my red stained eyes.
'What's wrong, Rose? I can see you've been crying.' He says concerned taking my hands.
I sigh and right before I want to tell Jack I hear someone calling my name.
'Miss Rose?'
'Oh God,' I take Jack's hand and lead him towards the other sight of my bed, just out of side from my door, 'It's a maid. I just need to shake her off.'
Jack nods and lays on the floor to hide behind my bed.
*Knock knock* 'Miss Rose, may I come in?'
'Yes, come in.' My door opens and it's Louise one of the maids. 'Oh, hello Louise.'
'Good evening, miss. Excuse me but I happen to believe I heard a scream coming from your room. Is everything all right?'
'Oh… yes totally. It was just a branch slapping against my window, which scared me for a moment. Everything is good.'
'Well all right, miss.' She looks at my window and walks towards it to close it. I want to sign Jack but I see he has already crawled underneath the bed. I almost let out a hard laugh.
'It's quite windy outside, miss. You don't want to get a cold. Would you like me to turn down the bed as well?'
I shake my head. 'No no. It's all right, Louise. I am heading to bed now, dinner was quite busy.'
'Okay. Goodnight, miss.'
'Goodnight, Louise.'
As soon as she's gone I rush over to the bed to help Jack get up.
'Jack, are you okay?' I laugh.
'Well my intention wasn't really to sneak into your room and spent the night under your bed. But seeing how clean it is… I don't really mind.'
He crawls from under the bed and I help him up.
'I guess no one will come to my room now.' I say.
'What about your mom?'
'Don't worry, mother won't even consider facing me right now.'
'Are you going to tell me what's happened, because I can see something isn't right.'
I look at him and sigh again. 'I guess it's just everything. You being alive. I felt so miserable again, if they hadn't found me I'd be on my own now… And I could feel myself getting pulled back into this appalling world. And then this morning you stood there and I still think I am dreaming. And I am just so scared of what will happen next. I want to leave with you right now, but they would notice I left. But if I stay here I'll be Rose Hockley within a month. Not to forget that if they find out you're still alive then… I just can't lose you again…'
'Rose… listen to me. Nothing it going to take me away from you, not even your family. It will be maybe the biggest risk of your life, but I know for sure that it is going to be fine. You can leave, you don't have to marry Cal. You just gotta believe you can do it. And you can.'
I nod at him maybe a thousand times. Jack is right. If I want to spend the rest of my life with him, which I want more than anything. I need to give myself a kick under my ass and do it.
I just keep nodding my head and a smile forms on my face. My smile grows wider and I put my lips on his. He smiles through the kiss and I push him gently on the bed.
'We have to be quiet.'
Ruth's POV
'Edith, get Louise for me now.'
'Of course, ma'am.'
I take a sip of my tea as I march through the drawing room. My daughter has turned into a despicable woman if it comes to me. It is now up to Mr. Hockley to set this right.
'You asked for me ma'am.' Louise says while standing in the doorway.
'Yes, Louise. Have you been to Rose yet?'
'Yes ma'am. She has already gone to bed. She told me she felt rather tired.'
'Anything else?'
'No ma'am. That was it. Well I thought I heard her scream, but it she got scared be something hitting her window.'
'What on earth could hit her window?'
'Well it is really windy outside… It was just a branch. Is there anything else I could do for you ma'am?'
I nod my head. 'Yes, actually. I want you to try to dial Mr. Hockley, I want him back tomorrow.'
'But ma'am isn't Mr. Hockley in Pittsburgh for business?'
'Yes he is… but I want him back tomorrow. If Rose can't behave in a proper way there have to be consequences. Another thing I want to ask you is that in the meantime while mr. Hockley is making his return, I want you to keep an eye an Rose. She isn't allowed to go anywhere without you.'
Louise nods her head. 'Even tomorrow at the garden party, ma'am?'
'Of course tomorrow at the garden party. Now please call Mr. Hockley and if he doesn't pick up, send him a telegram.'
'Yes ma'am.'
I take the last sip of my tea and head towards the hallways where Louise is trying to call Cal.
'Yes Mr. Hockley I understand but Mrs. Dewitt Bukater has given me the order to inform you about her desire of you coming back.' I hear her say.
I sigh and walk towards her taking the phone out of her hands.
'I'll handle it further, Louise. You can go to bed now.'
'Of course, ma'am.'
'Mr. Hockley excuse me for reaching you at this time of the day, but it's about Rose. I think it's better for you return back home spent as much time with her as you can. Her behavior has been out of limits, I do feel so ashamed.'
'Well, Ruth. You do know I am very busy at the moment. This is business, I am needed here, I can't just leave. Can't you just ask one of the maids to keep an eye on her? Perhaps Anne? Rose is very keen of Anne, isn't she?'
'I've already asked Louise to keep her in sight, Anne is too close with Rose. But I am assuring you that if we let her bringing that boy up again to every blowing leave passing her… I am not the one to blame. Tonight, while having dinner with the Bardeau's she did it again… And you know how it goes within no time whole Philadelphia knows about this scandal.'
I hear him sigh on the other side.
'Let's stop blaming one another. But I agree, we can't let this turn into a headline of the newspaper. I'll see what I can do to head back home. But as I can remember correctly, there is a garden party going on tomorrow?'
'There is. Yes.'
'Just let her know that if she even tries to bring… bring that creature up in a conversation… there will be consequences. And let Louise stay by her side the whole day. Then I hope I can be back by tomorrow evening or the morning after.'
'That's a wonderful idea, Cal. And I also want to discuss the wending date with you maybe with Rose as well, but we'll leave that for when you've gotten back.'
'Yes those are not such things to discuss through a connected line.'
'Haha. Yes. Well goodnight Mr. Hockley and we will see you back home.'
'Goodnight, Ruth.'
That is settled then. Feeling relieved I head upstairs.
Rose's POV
'I feel weird.' I say. My head is placed on his bare chest with only my sheets covering our bodies. Jack is holding my hand, playing with my fingers.
'It is weird. I still can't believe it though.'
'Well… I mean. Not only just us laying here… well indeed this doesn't feel like reality. It is also the fact that I don't feel scared. With all the possibilities of Cal and mother finding us I just don't feel any kind of fear. It just feels right.'
'You're more fearless at the moment than I am…'
I lift my head and turn it to face him.
'What do you mean?'
'Well I just hope I can make you happy. You know I have literally nothing… just some dollars and some clean shirts but that's it. It all feels so real now. Yet the fact that I want nothing more than take you with me everywhere I'll go, I am scared that maybe one day you won't.'
'Jack, how could you even say that? And how many times do I have to tell you that Whether you earn 1 dollar a day or 50 dollars a day I love you because of who you are not of what you can give me. You don't see me as an object, but as a being. And I can't thank you enough for that, Jack. Truly. It will be new to me, yes. I can't deny that. But I want nothing more than to wake up beside you every morning and live the day!'
He smiles widely at me and his eyes sparkle in the darkness of my room. I lean in to kiss him. Oh my I want nothing more than spend the rest of my life with him.
'Just remember. You decide, Rose. I don't want to push you or anything.'
'I know,' I sigh, 'They will look for me won't they?'
'To be honest, I think so yes...'
'The garden party!' I say shooting up.
Jack looks confusedly at me.
'Garden party?'
'Yes tomorrow. It's this yearly thing mother organises. There will be many people... I can easily brush off, perhaps with an excuse. But then she won't even notice I'm gone until maybe in the evening.'
'You are clear with the fact that it is tomorrow, right?'
I nod my head.
'Extremely clear, Mr. Dawson.'
'Well then... Mr. Dawson will be ready to pick her ladyship up to escort her to Philadelphia's most refined mansion.'
'Of course, at least I expect a 4 coursed lunch after that.'
'5 coursed, miss. I see that is settled then?'
We kiss each other.
I've never felt more happy in my life and if I can feel it my smile hasn't faded whatsoever. Jack pulls me to his chest again and kisses my forehead.
'I bet I have to go now. Before your mother sees me and throws me in prison.'
I sigh.
'I wish you could stay though.'
'Only one more day. I'll make everything ready at home and inform the boys. But I bet they'd love a woman keeping them company.'
He picks his clothes off the floor and dresses himself.
'What do you think is a right time? And should we inform Anne?' Jack asks me
'The party will last the whole day, I guess... So I have to find a way to sneak out of the front... Maybe around half past 3? And I'll telephone Anne when we've settled down safely.'
Jack laughs at me.
'One thing... We don't have a telephone...'
'How stupid of me... I'll send her a telegram.'
'All right. And half past 3 sounds great.'
'Please be careful.'
'Well if there aren't any gun loaded guards, I think I'll make it.' He winks at me.
'Well luckily there aren't any and mother sleeps in the other wing.'
I lean in to give him one last kiss.
'Goodnight, Jack.'
'Goodnight, Rose.'
'Good morning, miss.'
A bright light burns into my eyes and I growl letting my head fall back into my pillow.
'Are you ready for the garden party, miss? It's almost set up completely. It looks gorgeous.'
Well I better get ready then.' I say getting out of bed. I walk towards my window and open it to step onto my balcony. As I look down I can see everyone setting up the tents and decorations.
'It's a great weather for a party isn't it, miss?'
I nod my head. 'Indeed it is. I think it's good create a bit of fun in this house.'
The party doesn't matter one single bit to me. I can only think about running away. Just being with Jack. Finally being able to do what I want. Not being forced to be this perfect young woman.
'Louise?' I ask heading back insinde.
'Yes, miss?'
'Could you ask Anne to come and help me with my dress after I have had a bath?'
'Well, miss. Anne is not here today.'
'What do you mean? She's on duty today. She's always here on Thursday.'
'Not today, miss. Mrs. Dewitt Bukater has asked me to replace Anne for today that means dressing you as well, miss.'
'Well… Why?'
'I don't know, miss. She's given me the order last night. But I hope you are informed about Mr. Hockley returning tonight.'
I look at her in disbelief.
'Cal shouldn't be here until Saturday or Sunday. Why would she decide such thing without telling me!?'
If it means that Cal will be back today, then maybe the whole thing can't be done. I can't ring Jack either.
'I am sorry, miss. But Mrs. Dewitt Bukat…'
'It's all right, Louise. Sorry for my temper. Of course you can't do anything about it. I think I will get dressed now… Tell mother I'll talk to her at breakfast.'
'Of course.'
As Louise leaves my room I walk towards my bathroom and fill the bath. Come on, Rose don't be such a brat. Just keep it together for a few more hours. I just need to tell them that I am not feeling well and heading to bed. Then I just need to quitely sneak out of the front door. Yes. That's it. I let my bathrobe fall off my body and lower myself into the warm water, not being able to get it off my mind.
I am all dressed and ready and head downstairs to meet mother for breakfast. The huge clock down the stairs hits 9 O'clock and all the maids are rushing down the hallway all stressed out for today. Deep down I want to give them a day off and let them head to town to just let them having their brains cooled down.
'Miss, Rose. Your mother if waiting for you in the breakfast room.'
'Thank you Rosaline. I'll head over to her now.'
She nods her head and follows the rest.
'Ow Rosaline.' I say making her turn her towards me again.
'Give everyone my compliments. It looks amazing. And I'll come and help after breakfast.'
'Thank you, miss. But please don't worry about us and I don't want you to ruin your dress.'
'Who cares about my dress and I'd love to help I just feel so useless.'
'All right, miss. But take your time.'
I smile at her and head over to mother to join her for breakfast.
'You are late this morning, Rose.' She says as I walk into the room keeping her head in the newspaper.
'Well good morning, mother. I didn't know what to wear so that is why I am late.'
I take a seat infront of her.
'Well you should've let Louise help you. It would've gone a lot quicker.'
'Anne usually helps me. But it wasn't my idea to let her be replaced. Also why didn't you tell me Cal is coming back today.'
'Today or tomorrow. And if you don't have a single drop of responsibility within you, you leave me no other choice than to ask Cal to come back home and keep an eye on you as you won't listen to me.'
'You are being ridiculous, mother. You barely let me go outside! No wonder that I turn mad! If you want to keep turning my life into a nightmare, well you can stop. Because it already is.'
'Don't you dare to speak to me like that! If I didn't love you I wouldn't have done all this for you. If I didn't love you I would have never approved with Cal marrying you!'
'I am not hungry anymore,' I throw my cutlery to the side and stand up, 'I'm going to help the others with decorating for the party.'
Jack's POV
It's about 9 in the morning and the lads and I are sitting downstairs having some breakfast. Today is the day. I've already told everyone, because they happened to still be awake last night. And gladly they are all excited.
'You sure we can't come with you to pick her up? Maybe I can join the party.' Logan says with a smirk on his face.
'Guys, seriously,' I say, 'I'll pick her up and you'll meet us here. It's all just really complicated.'
'Tell me that yeah. It is almost like those novels Susanna reads.' Noah says.
I smirk and take a sip of my coffee. I can feel my nervous building up inside of me yet I don't know if it's anxiety or just excitement.
'She is more than welcome, Jack,' Bruce informs me, 'The day Anne brought her here I could already see what a warm hearted person she is. And she can stay as long as you want.'
'Well If it means that I have no place to sleep that I don't really know. No just kidding, Jack. I'll keep little Logan company for as long as needed.' Bruce says pinching Logan in his cheek.
'Fuck of will ya.'
'Don't worry guys, it won't be for that long I believe. We'll just see day by day. But if you don't mind I'm going to prepare a bit and try to get through the hours.'
'Don't worry, Jack. It is all gonna be fine.' Simon says giving me a pat on the shoulder.
'Thank you guys. Really.'
Rose's POV
It's now 1 O'clock in the afternoon and our backyard is loaded with people. I'm standing next to mother, pretending that everything is all right. She's talking to Mr. and Mrs. Gillingam about how excited she is for the wedding. Obviously. The only thing she can get out of her mouth is the word wedding or money. Not to forget Louise hasn't left me out of sight this whole morning. The axiety is starting to cripple inside of me. Everything goes past me like one big blur. My fearlessnes is somewhat gone and the idea of being caught doesn't seem to leave my mind.
'I think I am going to get myself a glass of water, mother. It is a bit hot.'
'Sure. There is a can at the food court.'
'Yes.'
I inhale the warm summer weather and head over to where the food is. With Louise following me. I ignore her and fill the glass consuming the liquid within seconds.
'Well… shouldn't an upcoming look a bit more happy?'
I turn around questioning who the strange voice might be.
'Tom!?' I ask surprised. Tom Harrington, my school best pal. Until the day he had to move to New York, I haven't seen him since.
I put my glass down and give him a hug.
'Tom. Oh my God. Look at you! You look all grown up.'
Louise looks at us uncomfortable.
'I'll leave you two, miss.'
I nod at her and she walks away.
'Well look at you, Rose. You look beautiful! And still the same red curls as you used to have.'
'Oh goodness. How long has it been? 6 years? How did you get here?'
'I came with mother and Gloria. Father couldn't make it.'
'Gloria?'
He turns around and points to a young woman with a baby blue dress and beautiful blonde hair. 'She is my girlfriend.'
'Ow wow Tom. She is beautiful. Congratulations.'
The girl turns around and smiles at us. Tom gives us a sign to come over.
'Gloria, darling. This is Rose Dewitt Bukater.'
'Of course I know who you are,' She smiles and we shake hands, 'Gloria Healey.'
'Nice to meet you, Gloria. I can see what a lucky man you are, Tom.'
Tom smiles at Gloria and kisses her hand.
'How have you been, Rose? I mean excuse me to bring it up, but after I've heard about the…'
'I am quite all right,' I cut him off, 'Thank you.'
'Well I am so glad you've all gotten out well. I mean so many people have lost their loved ones.'
'It's over now, Tom. It's been 4 months. Cal and I are going to get married. Everything is great.' I look at the ground not being able to face him.
'Darling, I'll leave you two alone.' Gloria says. Tom nods and gives her a kiss then turns back to me.
'I haven't seen you in years but I can still see that something is wrong. And it's Mr. Hockely isn't it?'
I nod my head.
'Listen, Tom. It's extremely hard to explain and out of all these people here you are the only one I think I can trust.'
'Of course you can trust me, Rose. Please tell me what's going on.'
'I don't love Cal.'
'Wow what a surprise.' He says with a chuckle.
'What's his name?'
'What?' I ask.
'What's his name. I mean the man you love instead.'
'Jack.'
'Jack Wilson? The son of…'
'No no no! Not Jack Wilson. You don't know him. I can't really talk openly about it here. You see with everyone. But I need you to keep a secret and not worry about me because I will be all right….'
I take a deep breath.
'I am leaving. Today.'
'What!?' where on earth are you going!?'
'Ssst Tom, please be quiet. I am running away. For good. Running away from all this because this is not where I belong. I'll be fine really. I'm staying with Jack. He'll be waiting for me around half past 3. But you can't tell anyone!'
Tom looks utterly confused at me…
'Rose… I won't tell anyone, but I am not sure if this is the best idea ever. I mean what if he isn't the one for you. Are you just going to return and pretend nothing has happened?'
'No I want this! I love Jack, more than anything in the world. When you look at Gloria don't you just feel this warm feeling or when you talk to her you just get so lost in her words and feel so safe?'
'Yes. I do love Gloria so much.'
'Exactly. That's what I feel when I am with him. I can't love Cal even after weeks of telling myself that I do. I can't and I never will. I am leaving this afternoon.'
Tom sighs and gives me a hug.
'You've always been like a sister to me, Rose. And I won't tell anyone. But I swear that if that guy ever hurts you… I will kill him.'
'He won't, Tom. He won't. I'll try to contact you as soon as I can. I'd like to keep in touch with you as well as Gloria.'
'I do too, Rose. And I hear you are very keen of that Jack guy. I'd like to meet him.'
'You will don't worry.'
'Do you have any idea. How you are going to leave without anyone noticing it?'
'I'll just say I am not feeling well or that I need to get something from inside.'
'If you need my help. Just give me a sign.'
'Thank you, Tom.'
For the rest of the party I've been chatting with Tom and Gloria. Chewing about how they've met at university and getting to know Gloria more. When mother came over to join us. I know she doesn't trust me.
'It's good to see you again, Mrs. Dewitt Bukater.' Tom says.
'Indeed, Tom I am glad you are doing well.'
Mother turns back to me.
'Are you all right, Rose?'
'I believe I am not feeling that well, mother.'
'Well that doesn't surprise me. You should be wearing a hat with this weather.'
'I think I need to lie down for a while.'
'I'll get, Louise for you.' Mother says.
I shake my head. 'No! I can easily walk up the stairs myself. I'm just going to cool down and I'll be back for dinner.'
Mother looks annoyed at me. 'Okay. Cal should be back then as well I believe. Now of you go.'
'Just take some rest, Rose. We will see you at dinner.' Gloria says.
I look at Tom who just gives me an approving nod. It's finally time.
I rush upstairs to get my small suitcase, which I have only filled with some needed material. I take a glance at me room for the last time.
'Goodbye.' I whisper.
I quickly rush back downstairs and look at the clock.
3:40. Jack must already be outside. I also glance at the hallway one last time to make sure no one is there. And nobody is. I take another deep breath and slowly open the door. Jack is probably outside the gate. My heels do make quite a sound hitting the ground, but everyone is on the other side and I can hear them talk so I bet they won't notice.
'Rose!' I can see Jack standing on the other side of the street and I run to him dropping my suitcase and kissing him immediately as we meet.
'Finally.' He murmers through our kiss.
'I almost couldn't bare it anymore,' I say, 'But we made it.'
Jack holds my cheeks in his hands and kisses me again.
'We made it.'
'Now let's get away from here. I can't stand another minute here.' I say while picking up my luggage.
Jack laughs at me and takes my hand.
'This way, milady.'
Cal's POV
I am sitting in the car back home. More annoyed than ever.
'You know I need to be back before dinner, right?'
'I am sorry, sir. It's quite busy, but we should be there within a couple of minutes.'
I sigh sitting back in my seat.
After about 15 minutes we arrive at the property and a quickly jump out of the car. Handing the man a 10 I head over inside.
'Ow welcome back, Mr. Hockley.' Edith one of the maids welcomes me.
'Hello, Edith. Where is everyone?'
'Still outside, sir. Dinner will be served within half an hour.'
'Great. Thank you, Edith.'
'You are welcome, sir.'
I make my way through the house towards the backyard.
'Good lord.' I mumble to myself when I see everyone.
'Caledon! Good you are back.' I see Ruth coming towards me.
'Good evening, Ruth. What a wonderful party you've planned. As always.'
'Oh stop it, Cal. All I do say so myself I've done really well.'
I chuckle at her. 'But where is my beautiful fiancee?'
'She's in her room. She didn't feel that well, but she said she'd be back by dinner.'
'Then I should have a look, shouldn't I?'
With that I am on my way to Rose's room.
I knock on her door.
'Sweet Pea?' I knock again.
'Sweet Pea? It's me. Ruth said you didn't feel so well so I came to have look.'
I hear nothing and knock again. Nothing. I open her door and step inside.
'Sweet Pea? Are you all ri…'
Her room is empty and her bed is perfectly made.
'Rose?'
I open a couple of doors but she is nowhere to be found.
'What on earth!?'
I leave her room and rush through the house looking in almost every room. But she is nowhere.
I see Louise the other maid walking through the corridor and I call her.
'Louise!?'
'What is wrong, Mr. Hockley?'
'Rose, have you seen Rose?'
'She isn't feeling that well I was jsut on my way to che…'
'She isn't in her room. She hasn't been in her room since this morning or so. I can't find her anywhere.'
'Mr. Hockley. Are you certain?'
I nod my head. And rush back to the garden.
'Everyone! Listen up!.'
Everyone turns silent and look at me.
'Has anyone seen Rose? She is nowhere to be found.'
Everyone starts mumbling and Ruth rushes over to me.
'What do you mean, Cal?' She asks worried.
'She is nowhere. Her bed is untouched and she is in no other room of the house. I am sorry Ruth to say that Rose has run away. And we need to find her!'
