Hi so I took my exam literally two hours ago. I'm FREEEEEEEE. Due to the obnoxiously long wait I put you through I'm giving you a super chapter. You're welcome.
ROSE
The drive to my house had to have been one of the longest drives of my life. Granted, I didn't drive much, but still, it was bloody long and bloody awkward. In past years, Hugo and I would fill my mum and dad in about quidditch and school while dad cracked jokes and mum asked specific questions relating to the various subjects. This was not past years. I sat in the back seat with Athena on my lap and stared out the window praying for the ride to be faster.
Finally, we pulled up to our three-story brick house in the town of Godric's Hallows. Our lawn had the usual white picket fence and I spotted my tree in the backyard. I couldn't help but be relieved to be home. I got out the second the car stopped levitating both Hugo's and my trunks from our car. I walked inside and placed the trunks in our rooms. I came downstairs immediately regretting leaving the rest of my family…alone.
My dad stood with his hands in his jeans pockets looking at the ground as if he didn't know what he was doing here. My mum was writing a letter the quill making holes in the paper. Hugo was marching towards the stairs in a tyrant.
"Hugo stop!" I yelled. I then walked over to my mum yanked the quill out of her hand earning a protest from her before I announced, "We are having a family dinner at five, I shall cook. Mum you are taking the day off work tomorrow." I held up my hand to stop her from protesting, "Dad you too," He nodded happily, "Hugo I believe you have something to discuss with dad before dinner. I will write to Uncle Harry and the Minister to inform them that you are both taking the day off. If I see either of you working on anything work related tomorrow Weasley Wizard's Weazes will get involved," I walked into the kitchen.
My mum followed me just as I expected, "My own daughter will not threaten me!"
I ignored her as I began flipping through a cookbook, "Would you prefer chicken or pasta tonight?"
"Rose Arabella Weasley," My mother's tone was deadly but I knew how to play her game.
"Good idea, chicken parmesan with spaghetti that way we have both,"
"Why are you doing this?" My mum asked her voice changing from deadly to pleading.
"I want change," I whispered, "I want change for Hugo. I want change for dad. I want change for me. This is the last thing I can control in my life. The last thing I have a chance at making better. I want to take the chance,"
"Rose darling, you were fine for seventeen years why, one day, does everything all of a sudden need to become different?" My mum begged to understand.
"I wasn't fine. Hugo and I are better actors then you give us credit for," I shrugged. I walked over to the cabinet pulling out the ingredients for the recipe. "It was sort of a built of tension that when you didn't visit me when I really needed the comfort and when you made Hugo think he was about to be disowned made me snap. I know that I need to take control of the situation now because no one else will," I walked back to the counter beginning to measure. I refused to look at my mum.
"You were unconscious. Why would we visit you then? It would have been a waste of time." She tried to reason with me.
"What about when I was awake? There was a full week and a half before break,"
"You had your friends," My mums voice was quiet.
"They aren't you or dad. I could have gotten over that though and I almost did until Hugo told me about what you did to him," My voice turned cold and I began chopping the tomatoes forcefully. "Why didn't you reply? Tell him you didn't care? That you loved him anyway? Why didn't you tell him that you guys would discuss the matter when he got home? Instead of making him think you fucking disowned him? He almost didn't come home for Christmas because he thought you hated him!"
I looked down at the mess I had made of the tomato. "Bloody hell," I muttered grabbing a new tomato.
"Let me," My mum offered. I shrugged sinking against the counter.
"I didn't reply because I was ashamed that I hadn't noticed. I thought I had been a bad mother for not noticing that my son was gay. Then when he confirmed it was him in the picture kissing Neville's son, I didn't know what to say. I knew I still loved him. I just didn't know what to write. I kept putting off replying until before I knew it, it had been three weeks,"
"I'm writing to Uncle Harry and the minister," I walked out rubbing my temples. My headache hadn't gone away yet if anything it was becoming worse. I pulled two spare pieces of parchment out and a quill.
Dear Uncle Harry,
My father will not be able to come into work tomorrow. We are having a family day. There has been some tension in the house that needs to get settled so I am forcing everyone including my dad to stay home therefore unless there is some major mission please do not call on him for Hugo's sake. By the way, you won't be able to communicate with him. I will put aside all letters from known aurors for the day. Also, I think it would be good for Scorpius and I to talk with you at Teddy's wedding a lot's happened this year and we should review the plan. Anyway, my dad won't be at the office tomorrow.
Your niece,
Rose
I wrote the next letter to my Mum's boss, the Minister of Magic. She worked directly below him as an associate who protected the rights of house elves, muggle-borns, goblins, centaurs, and giants essentially anyone who was discriminated against.
Dear Minister Bonehart,
I would kindly like to inform you that Hermione Weasley will be taking a personal day with her family tomorrow. If you need to communicate with Mrs. Weasley please send an owl to her home addressed to her daughter, Rose Weasley, due to all communication with everyone else in the home being cut off for the day of December 18th. If you have any questions or need to communicate with Mrs. Weasley please owl me, Rose Weasley, at 492 Godrics Hollows. Thanks.
Sincerely,
Rose Weasley
I laughed. My mum was going to kill me. I quickly sent out Athena with both letters before heading back into the kitchen to finish dinner. On my way I saw my dad and Hugo playing wizards chess. I raised an eyebrow at Hugo who when my dad's back was turned gave me a thumbs up. I was glad something went well today.
When I arrived in the kitchen I was surprised to see dinner well under way. Mum had definitely used magic. I had been planning on cooking without it but now that she's started what the hell.
We cooked in silence until dinner was finally ready. "Hugo, Dad dinner!" I called to them. They were in the middle of another wizard's chess game. This wasn't exactly surprising because ever since Hugo acquired the ability to beat my dad two years ago they play nonstop. My dad had never lost before that.
"Checkmate!" Hugo called standing up.
"What?" My dad cried, "Fine I give up. I'm just glad it's my son who's beating me not some dimwitted bimbo stranger."
"Thanks?" Hugo questioned the compliment. My dad waved it off as they walked over to the table.
I placed the meal in front of everyone and sat down bracing myself to be a peacemaker. I knew I would have to be because that wasn't exactly my father's specialty. "This is great Rosie!" Dad praised.
"Thanks mum helped too,"
"Great job 'Mione what do you think Hugo?" Dad was better at this then I thought.
"Its fantastic Rose," After a glare from me, "and mum,"
"Thank you Hugo but please don't just say things because your sister is forcing you too we're all family. We are allowed to speak with an open mind," My mum had just opened the way for a long, tense dinner.
"In that case I don't believe that you helped because I think you were probably writing some letter to some lawyer stating the laws that random creatures have," Hugo scooped a piece of pasta into his mouth definitively.
"In case you have forgotten I also help muggle-borns like myself. In case you have forgotten your sister is helping me protect them too." When did I get brought into this? "In case you have forgotten I am helping poor little creatures who can't help themselves!"
"Mum I understand how important your field is. I get it. I just want more family time. Not to mention that when I'm at Hogwarts you can work as long as you want but when I'm home I want to see you," Hugo sighed.
"I know Hugo I'm sorry,"
I was still curious about why I mattered in her tyrant, "When did I begin helping you?"
"You marrying Scorpius in a way is protecting muggle-borns. It's stopping a war over them," My mum explained. I had never realized why she had pushed for me to do it. For her work.
"So you want me to marry Scorpius so more people will vote on a law?" I clarified my voice turning hard.
"No Rose," She realized her mistake too late, "I want it to stop the war. Save lives. The laws are bonuses,"
I shook my head at her, "It doesn't matter anyway, I'm going to marry him so you'll have your laws sooner or later." I took a breath in order to calm myself, "Hugo we should invite the Longbottoms over for dinner soon. What do you say?"
I did what I did best- avoid the problem. This almost always led to a bigger problem later on but I hated confrontation. Hugo stared at me for a moment before following along, "That would be great. Frank's one of my best friends and of course I like seeing Uncle Neville despite the fact that we see him almost year round."
"I could turn in my essay to him too since I didn't get the chance before leaving. What do you guys say, would you like to have them over?"
"I would love to. I haven't seen Longbottom in ages," Dad laughed, "I'll owl him tomorrow seeing what day works for him,"
The rest of dinner passed by tensely and uneventfully. Hugo and I caught mum and dad up on the school year until we all called it a night at eight thirty. Eight thirty. I don't remember ever going to bed this early even when I was younger so I lay in bed until I finally realized how pathetic that was, just lying there, and began writing a letter.
AN: SO the rest of the chapter is just a bunch of letters enjoy!
Dear Scorpius, 12-18
Your family probably thinks my family is rather crazy right now… I would if I was them. Let's just say a lot of built up tension came out today. I don't really know how else to phrase it. It all started with my brother worrying that he had been disowned for a reason I can't say and then well you heard. Thanks for that by the way…I don't know if I could have held it together as well if I hadn't had someone to lean on, you know?
Well let's just say after we got home from the train my poor father was very out of the loop, my mother was stabbing holes in her parchment with a quill, and Hugo was throwing a fit. It was quite the sight. I had to take control, which being head girl, you must know I am very good at. So I wrote a letter to my Uncle Harry and the Minister of Magic telling both of them not to contact my mum or dad all day tomorrow because they were taking personal days. I was rather scared to write to the minister because going "Hello Minister my mum won't be in work tomorrow because her whole family is falling apart," doesn't quite bode well for mum. (I did not write that for clarification.)
Then we had a family dinner courtesy of me! Didn't know I could cook did you? (My mom helped some after I butchered the tomatoes out of anger but if I hadn't been angry they would have been perfect I swear!)The family dinner idea I admit was not my smartest. My dad tried to help make small talk with me but it only lasted so long. Especially when I wasn't interested in small talk anymore. Yes, Rose Weasley got furious with her mum. I suppose this isn't a surprise I am known for my temper among my cousins. They say it takes a lot to get her angry but once you do run. That young sir is advice, run. That is if you get me angry which at some point in your life you probably will. Anyways, my mum had this notion that as soon as we were married she would be able to pass all sorts of laws for muggle-borns so that's the only reason she agreed to it so quickly. I got over it. I mean if she wants to take advantage of the situation, she can, there's nothing I can do about it.
Anyway, I hope your first eight hours home have been less eventful and much better then mine.
Love,
Rose
Dear Rose, 12-19
Your day definitely trumps mine not necessarily in a good way but in eventfulness. It really isn't good for you to be so stressed out. You are still fighting the poison and you should be resting. I know you feel like you're fine but Rose you're not. Take your medicine and rest. If not for yourself then for me. I can't stop you from stressing because I would be stressed out if my family acted like that. Just try.
I think my parents were actually very impressed by how you acted at the train. You took control. You were assertive. You were composed when nobody else was. They were impressed. I think my dad was shocked that your mum was the problem not your dad which is funny. It all goes back to the old nemesis thing.
About your mom, she should take advantage of the situation. If she can get some laws passed and protect people's rights I say go for it. Why not? I agree that her first thought should have been to you and whether you wanted to be with me but the more that can come of this the better.
If you do need an escape from the madness come to my house any day, any hour. I'm being serious. Feel free to apparate or floo here my parents would love to have you here early.
If not. Four days.
Love,
Scorpius
Dear Ron, 12-19
Is everything alright at your house? Harry's making me write this because apparently Rose won't let any letters come in from known aurors. Apparently she said something about letting you have the day off for Hugo's sake. Which he said was fine, by the way, but why Hugo's sake? Is Hugo ill? Because then bloody hell your bills must be through the roof but Lily said he seemed fine on the train just nervous. She also mentioned that their was tension in the house are you and Hermione ok? Please respond Harry and I are worried about you.
Love your favorite sister,
Ginny
Dear Ginny, 12-19
Hugo and Hermione had a bit of a fight, well a huge fight, over Hermione's tendency to work too much so Rose took control and is making everyone stay home today. But that's not all, Hugo had another confession yesterday I don't know if he wants me to tell though. Let me ask him. He said it was fine and the more that I tell the easier. Well Hugo's gay. Not happy gay like gay gay. I suppose you guys would figure that out but when he told me I had to clarify. It's a rather complicated story but 'Mione found out before I did during the school year through a picture and never sent a reply to Hugo except asking if the boy was him. Hugo thought she disowned him. Rose has become like a momma bear ever since to Hugo. So the house has indeed been a bit tense lately. Anyway, don't tell your kids I don't want it getting around Hogwarts till Hugo wants it too.
Love,
Ron
Dear Rose Weasley, 12-19
I would like to get your mothers opinion on a court case that has appeared regarding a dragon that was recently found. It was legally registered though. You see there are regular check ups on all registered dragons, thanks to your mum. During this check up it was found with what trainers call a mark of abuse- a scratch along its back. Any scratch on a dragon can be considered a mark of abuse due to it being so hard to get through dragon hide. There are few things that can get break through the hide unless you have multiple people but since there is only one person in possession of the dragon we researched farther into this case. We have come to the belief that the dragon was not born naturally. We think the owner used the draconifors spell and transfigured a statue of the dragon into a real dragon. When this is done the owner has complete control. The spell is closely regulated because we do not want people using the dragons for the wrong reasons. We have brought the dragon to your Uncle Charlie's reserve however it is tricky to separate a dragon under the draconifors spell and it's owner. Your Uncle Charlie is a very talented dragon tamer though and I have the utmost faith that he will be able to do it. The key here though is to be able to have your mother come in today and have her talk to the man so that he can have a speedy trial to determine whether he simple wanted a pretamed dragon or whether he wanted a dragon for an army. If you would be so kind to lend me your mother for several hours it would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Minister Bonehart
Dear Minister Bonehart, 12-19
I'm afraid I will not be able to oblige with your request. The man will simply have to wait until tomorrow for his trial. I'm sorry but you must understand that occasionally there are things more important than trials within two hours of your conviction. However, given that you do not have a family I do imagine it hard for you to understand this concept. Therefor I shall go easy on you. My mother will be in the office tomorrow and shall deal with the trial then. Until that time occurs, good day.
Sincerely,
Rose Weasley
Dear Neville, 12-19
Rose suggested having your family over for dinner sometime soon. She needs to turn in her essay but also wants to talk to her godfather haha. What do you guys say? Is there a day that works for you, Hannah, and Frank? Let me and Hermione know soon.
Sincerely.
Ron
Dear Frank, 12-19
Yesterday was like hell. Well not entirely. I wasn't disowned, my dad was all for it and Rose held the family together like glue. You know how she is. Have you told your parents yet? You're so lucky your dad works at the school otherwise I'm sure the picture would have been sent to them too. But considering that Slytherin git would have gotten detention for months if he had sent it to him he obviously didn't. If you have how did they take it? Oh and my family wants to invite yours over for dinner…that should be interesting considering Rose and my mum are the only ones who know we're dating unless you told them that too which is fine I just need to know because then I should tell me dad. I feel bad he was so out of the loop when my mum and I started yelling at each other at King's Cross.
It wasn't only about being gay it was about her being a workaholic I've told you about that. I just got so mad that everything started spilling out. Then the Malfoy's were there too just gawking at us. Poor Rose that probably made an awful first impression. Well let me know about dinner and everything.
Love,
Hugo
Dear Hugo, 12-19
I'm sorry it was so bad. At least Rose and your dad handled everything well. I confessed the same night you did my dad was shocked as was mum. My dad spit up his water. It was quite the sight. He was fine with it, he just didn't expect it. I suppose since he sees me more then mum it was more shocking. Mum asked if I had my eye on anyone so I did tell them about you. They were happy it was you so that's a good thing! Dad told me he got an owl from your dad asking…I would love to I think my dads kind of freaked out about meet the boyfriend thing despite the fact that he teaches you and is Rose's godfather. I'll talk to him and have him send a response soon. You should probably tell your father about us though it would make things less complicated. The less secrets the better.
Love,
Frank
Dear Harry Potter, 12-19
Is there a reason that your niece is withholding information from her mother for the day? Is she doing the same for her father? This rather concerns me. As head of the auror department you are obliged to inquire when something of this sorts occurs.
Sincerely,
Minister Bonehart
Dear Minister Bonehart, 12-19
I assure you that there is no reason to be concerned about Ron or Hermione Weasley. I have been in contact with Ron through my wife and have gotten to the root of the problem. There are simply some family issues that their daughter is taking the liberty of fixing. As Rose has probably told you, you will have your associate back right on time tomorrow morning there is no need to worry minister.
Sincerely,
Harry Potter
Dear Harry Potter, 12-19
Have you seen either of these people? Are you sure that their daughter is not holding them hostage? Mrs. Hermione Weasley has not missed a day of work in over fifteen years besides the ministry mandated days off. I am concerned for her wellbeing please visit their household or I will.
Sincerely,
Minister Bonehart
Dear Minister Bonehart, 12-19
If that is what it will take to reassure you that both Hermione and Ron Weasley are perfectly fine and sitting in their house drinking hot tea then I will stop by at the cost of facing the wrath of Rose Weasley.
Sincerely,
Harry Potter
Dear Scorpius, 12-19 and 1/2
I might just take you up on the offer of hosting me. It's rather tempting. However, I need to stay here for the day intercepting mail I've really only needed to confiscate one letter and that was from the minister. My mum was furious. Not to mention, I wasn't very polite with the minister. Good thing I don't want a ministry job! He's probably going to tell my mum all about my letter tomorrow and then I'll really get it…I might visit you tomorrow the second my mum gets home.
Scorpius please stop worrying about me. I'm taking my medicine on time, Hugo is helping me with my physical therapy and I'm taking it easy I'm simply writing loads of letters. My hand can handle it. Oh and sorry about the giant ink stain at the bottom of the paper. Our cat Crookshanks knocked the bottle over. I really would have restarted but I was a tad too lazy and I've stopped caring what you thought. Aren't you happy to be there? It's both a blessing and a curse just ask Albus. Someone just apparated here I best go see who it is.
Almost three days.
Love,
Rose
