She didn't know what to make of him at first. He'd come out of the regeneration grey-haired and a little wrinkled. He looked old enough to be her grandfather, and had a Scottish accent he's already put blame on Amy Pond for. He spoke the name with fondness though, so Clara knew he didn't mind the new accent. It was new for her as well, as it was his first incarnation with a foreign accent.
She still held emblems of his previous life with her whenever she was with the new man, sometimes wearing her bow-tie patterned sweater, wearing red pumps that reminded her of his fez, and wore purple frequently, remembering his outfit. The new man sometimes teased her about this, but always with a gentle side to it, never being cruel or mean to her, despite how he treated others. She knew it hurt him a little, though. She was carrying around reminders of his previous self, the one she'd fallen in love with, and she knew this man was slightly jealous of himself. He joked about it aplenty, sending them into laughing fits. After those fits however, they both were a bit extra grumpy, both a little extra sad.
She knew he still loved her. She knew feelings and attachments never changed in regenerations. He still missed his Ponds, he remembered Rose and River fondly, and kept a quiet, big part of his hearts for Susan. She knew he loved her, but she didn't know if she loved this man. No. It wasn't because of the looks. He was still the same age as before, and she'd fallen in love with all of his selves. No matter how old he ever looked, she loved the man.
So why didn't she love this one? Perhaps every one thousand years of loving, she cannot love any more. She knows this is untrue, however, she loves this man. She does not want to admit it, the trauma of the regeneration still with her, the tears, the blood, the pain, the war still fresh in her mind.
One day, however, when he takes her hand in his for the first time in months, she decides to admit it. She loved every one of him and especially loves this one. She loves his little quirks, she loves his sarcastic comments, she loves his choice of clothes, and she loves the way he was always so gentle to her.
She loves him.
And right then, as they held hands and looked upon the earth from a viewpoint on the moon, right when he turned to her and gave her a huge grin, that was all that mattered.
The impossible girl and the new man, in love.
