Danny took a deep breath before walking past Renzulli and into the interview room. He wasn't sure he was quite ready for this but he had to do it. Danny nodded to his partner and his brother, "Jamie, what can you tell me?"
Jamie shrugged, "Not a lot about the kidnapping. I don't remember much, small details, things that don't really connect."
Danny sat down across from the younger man, "Anything you can tell us will be fine."
Jamie's tongue darted out, nervously wetting his lips, "I think we were playing a game, hide and seek, it was my favorite because I always hid the best. I used to think I was playing by myself, with imaginary friends or something, because I could remember names, but they were the kind a toddler gives those around him cause he can't say the whole name. Anyways, I used to ask my parents about them but they always said they weren't real, that I was imagining things. Deedee, Owey, and Rin, must have been you guys, I always thought they seemed to real to be imaginary." Jamie paused a moment and Danny almost hugged the kid right then, he remembered Jamie calling him Deedee, it had been one of the things he missed the most because he hated it so much when it happened but couldn't imagine why when it was gone. Jamie, ignorant of Danny's emotions, pressed on, "Other than that, I remember a soft voice, a dark car... nothing else. Not until my adoptive parents anyway."
Danny nodded, "Tell me about them."
Jamie blew out a breath, "There is a lot to tell there. My Mother wasn't too bad. At first she read me stories, tucked me in, gave me hugs and kisses. After a while, it stopped. I don't know why, but she ignored me, left me to my own devices pretty much by the time I was in third grade. Father never cared much for me, used to say I was more trouble than I was worth. I always thought he meant me getting beat up at school, I was a big nerd and kids aren't nice. He was a thief I think, not anything big time, mostly residences. He was always showing up with other peoples stuff, got arrested for possession of stolen property a few times as well. It wasn't a good living though, when he didn't have any houses ready to case, he would take his frustration out on me. Told me I was a bad son for what ever reason the day gave him and took his belt to my back. I have scars if you need pictures for evidence." Jamie paused, waiting for Danny to reply, the older man simply nodded, not trusting himself to speak. Jamie carried on, "On a few more memorable occasions, I got thrown down a flight of stairs or boarded up in my room for a week without food. Broke a few bones during incidents like that." Jamie halted, his gaze flickered between his brother and the other detective, "I know that the most common reason for kidnapping a child with no ransom is of a sexual nature. I know you want to ask, so I'll tell you. No. It never happened, one thing I will always be grateful for. There were a few times, when we were bad off that I thought my Father would try to sell me but we always got back on our feet before he did."
Danny let out a sigh of relief, "Kid, I know that was a lot for you to share, for you to trust with me. Thank you. What you gave us should be very helpful in figuring things out, or at least nailing your adoptive parents to the wall."
Jamie smiled, his eyes shining with barely held in tears, "Thanks Danny." Jamie stood and made as if to hug Danny but stopped, unsure. Danyy reached over and gave him a awkward brotherly half hug. Jamie smiled tightly before making his way into the hallway and to his waiting TO, who was ready with a big hug and an offer for a beer.
Danny turned when he heard his partner sigh, "Really Danny, a side hug? The kid wanted you to hold him tight and tell him the monsters were never going to get him again."
Danny ran a hand over his head, "I know, I know. I'm just still trying to process everything. He's my kid brother and he has scars, scars Jacks, from a man he calls Father that I've never met but want to kill in everyway I have ever seen in this job."
Jackie smiled, and put a hand on her partner's shoulder, "That's what being a big brother means."
