"Castiel? Nathaniel?"
The two had gone out for their morning jog and probably wouldn't be back for an hour. She hated having them do everything for her, and decided that now was a perfect chance to show them what she could do. Larger as her stomach was, she strained just to roll over in bed, and actually getting to her feet seemed impossible, but she forced herself up wobbling a bit before gaining her balance. She waddled out of her and Castiel's room before making her way up the hallway.
"So far so good."
She turned the last corner to the lengthy staircase that joined the floors.
"I can do this. I'll show Castiel I can do it on my own."
She got a firm grip on the railing and began making the journey. She was tired and aching- her feet seeming to swell up with every step. She stopped after three steps, groaning when she realized it was harder than she thought it would be. She was exhausted, but too tired to go back up the stairs. She lowered herself to the ground, thinking she would be able to scoot the rest of the way down the stairs, but she didn't have the upper arm strength to keep herself from collapsing to the next stair. She rested for a moment before reaching up for the railing again. She pulled herself up to her feet.
"Dammit! I can't do it…"
As soon as she started to step up to the next step, she lost her footing and began to fall backwards. What happened next was too quick for her to avoid as she reached out for anything she could use to catch herself. Her fingernails broke as she tried desperately to grab the railing, sending her falling backwards down the stairs. The weight of her stomach worsened the fall as she tumbled down the stairs.
POW!
She hit her head on the wall at the bottom of the stairs, crushing her skull in an explosive collision.

(20 Minutes later)
Castiel chuckled as Nathaniel jumped up and down on the stairs of the porch, eagerly waiting for Castiel to catch up to him. For the first time ever, Nathaniel beat Castiel in the brief sprint they always did at the end of the jog. Castiel was still healing up from his injuries, but he was well enough to jog once in a while. Still, he let Nathaniel have his victory.
"Alright, alright. You win this time, Nat."
Nathaniel clapped giddily.
"I'm gonna tell Amber! That was awesome!"
Castiel smiled and shook his head as he turned his key in the door. They stepped in, but something didn't feel right. The house was not as lively as usual. Castiel looked over to Nathaniel, who apparently felt the disturbing atmosphere as well.
"Amber?"
No response. Castiel tossed his keys into the bowl by the door before he and Nathaniel started to make their way around the corner to the staircase.
"Amber? Where are you babe?"
Castiel turned to make his way up the stairs when he froze. There was a red liquid pooled at the feet of the wooden steps. He crouched down, eyes widening with worry when he realized it was blood.
"Amber?!"
He sprinted up the stairs as Nathaniel turned the corner, himself seeing the blood at the foot of the stairs. He eased up the stairs, so as not to step on the fluid.
"Castiel?"
He reached Castiel, but could not see past him. He suddenly became aware of Castiel's body language. He stood with a hand on the light switch nearby, body completely stiff with his head down- Nathaniel was not sure if he was looking at something or what, but the rise and fall of his shoulders told him Castiel was either about to cry or he was extremely nervous.
"Castiel? What's wrong-"
He stepped forward, eyes following the trail of blood all the way to Amber, who was laying on her side perfectly still, eyes staring forward as if she was in a trance. Blood formed at the bottom of Castiel T-Shirt, which she'd been wearing when she fell. Castiel stepped closer, then realizing the child had been killed during the fall. Nathaniel remained still, showing no sign of emotion. Castiel checked for a pulse, his heart sinking when he felt how cold she was. No pulse. Eyes were gray.
"Amber…baby…you can't…why…"
Nathaniel looked to Castiel.
"What happened?"
"She died during the fall Nat."
"Amber didn't fall."
"God! Look at her Nat! She's gone!"
"Amber's okay. See?"
Nathaniel walked over to her and picked up one of her hands. It fell from his grip. He shrugged.
"She's just asleep. She'll wake up later."
Castiel looked over to Nathaniel, who showed no signs of joking.
"Nat-"
"SHE'S ASLEEP!"
He stormed off to his room, closing the door behind him. Castiel called the police before going to find Nathaniel.
"Nat?"
He opened the door to Nathaniel's room, to find it empty.
"You in here, buddy?"
A small sob was heard, and Castiel followed the sound to Nathaniel's closet to find him sitting there with his knees to his chest, tears rolling down his cheeks.
"Why'd she leave me, Cas?"
Castiel draped an arm over Nathaniel's shoulders hugging him tightly. They stayed like that for nearly five minutes before the police arrived on the scene. After questioning, the police took her body from the house. Castiel put Nathaniel to bed that night before sitting on the landing of the stairs, sadly looking back at the blood stain on the wall where she hit her head.
"Amber…"
He frowned before shaking his head, only now allowing himself to cry so as not to upset Nathaniel.
