Percy was having a great day before he found two demigods snooping around.
It had started out simple enough. He had rolled out of bed at about twelve (thank the gods for summer) and headed straight for the shower. The hot water had really helped him to wake up so by the time he got out he didn't look like a zombie.
Looking in the mirror he noticed his tan had darkened a bit due to the sunny weather so it clashed nicely with his eyes. He knew that both were a gift from his father which just made him mad every time he looked in the mirror. Luckily he was always quickly distracted from it when his snakes started hissing because yes, he had snakes for hair. Something that would probably annoy most people but he loved his raven black serpents because they showed how he was connected to his awesome mom.
He made sure to give himself some enthusiastic finger guns before heading back into his room. There he put on some dark shorts with a red bro-tank. His black high tops went on his feet and his trusty gray beanie concealed his little serpent friends. His mom liked him to cover up even at home just in case someone caught them by surprise. He took one more look at himself before slipping on his dark aviators and grabbing riptide off of his bedside table.
The physical gift from his father made him just as mad as his eyes and skin did but he had to admit it was a pretty cool weapon, plus it got his mom off his back when he wanted to take a trip into the city where monsters who thought his mom to be a sellout resided.
When he walked into the kitchen he found a note from his mom saying that she had gone into the city to get weekly supplies. He frowned for a bit because this meant he didn't get to have her use her awesome cooking powers to make him breakfast (or lunch?). He pouted for a moment before moving to get the supplies for a BLT. Luckily he often made this dish (because it's delicious) so it didn't take long for him to be plopping down at the kitchen table with a wonderful bacon filled sandwich in hand. He munched on it happily before a noise caused him to pause.
It sounded like a crashing noise coming from the back of the house. He knew it couldn't be his mom since she always came up the dirt driveway in their old beat up truck. He listened for another minute before hearing it again, his snakes automatically hissing. Percy frowned before setting down his sandwich and sneaking out the front door.
He crept around the house so he was in the shadows of the trees, familiarity with his surroundings and training making him completely silent. He kept a hand on riptide in his pocket but didn't bring it out just in case it was some stupid teens that were lost.
When Percy finally made it so he had a vantage point of the back of the house he saw two teens—a boy and girl—stumble out of the thick bushes that lined the back of the property. With a sight he headed toward them, noting their linked hands.
"You know if you are looking for a good place to make out the woods are not your best option." He called out when he was closer. Both turned in surprise and Percy finally got a good look at them.
They were definitely not your average teenager that much Percy could tell. Both were sun kissed and toned in a way that only hours of work could give you. The girl had curly blond hair and stormy grey eyes. She had a calculating look and Percy had a feeling he never wanted to be at the end of the dagger that was resting on her hip. The male had a very boy next door look to him with his bright blue eyes and blonde hair. The only things that ruined the picture were the scar on his upper lip and the way he looked tensed for a fight. Both were strangely good looking and Percy knew them to be supernatural and from the way they were standing and armed Percy guessed them to be demigods; greeeaaat.
"Who are you?" The girl asked and her eyes trailed Percy up and down, trying to figure him out like he was a particularly hard puzzle.
Percy just raised one eyebrow, clearly unimpressed. "Shouldn't I be asking you that? You know since you are on my property."
"You live here?" The boy asked surprised and the girl's eyes narrow even further.
She took a minuet before nodding once as if agreeing with herself. "I'm Annabeth Chase and this is Jason Grace." She offered.
Percy contemplated his options for a moment before deciding there was no harm in saying his name. "Percy Jackson and I would say pleased to meet you but I'm not entirely sure why you're here and whether or not I should be pleased."
Annabeth seemed to pick up on his unsubtle hint and explained, "We are looking for someone special and I believe that may be you."
Jason seemed as surprised as Percy felt when he asked, "You do?"
Annabeth nodded and replied without taking her eyes off of Percy. "Yes I do Jason just look at the signs." Jason seemed to think about it for a moment and Percy could tell who the smarter one in the relationship was.
"What kind of special you talking about? Percy asked her, bringing riptide out and flipping it casually through his fingers so he was ready if they wanted to attack.
"Percy what are you doing out her…oh!" A voice exclaimed and all three teens turned to see Percy's mother standing at their back door. He must have been too distracted with the stare off to have heard the truck pull up.
All friendliness was gone from his mother's voice when she practically growled, "What are you doing here?" There was a vague hissing sound and Percy's eyes flew up to the scarf she kept over her head when she went out.
"I think the more important question is what is he doing here?" Annabeth bit back and both demigods crouched lower.
Medusa's eyes narrowed behind her sunglasses and in a cool tone she replied, "He's my son."
Surprise and a bit of disgust were clear on both of their faces and Percy couldn't help but note that his mom was right when she said no one would understand.
"Son?" Annabeth asked like her view of the world was flipped upside down.
"What? Did you think the gods and goddesses just liked to screw mortals over?" Percy snorted, crossing his arms over his chest.
"Language!" His mom chastised but Percy just rolled his eyes. It was true!
"Wait so you are the demigod?" Jason asked, his confusion deepening.
"Why are you looking for him?" You didn't know he was half gorgon so you aren't here to kill him." Medusa guessed, looking back and forth between Annabeth and Jason.
Annabeth sighed as if annoyed before replying with, "There is a great prophecy that we have recently learned your son may be a part of." Annabeth looked between the two of them, "Unless you have another demigod hiding around and we can just take them and forget this all happened."
"Oh let me just go down to my stock pile of demigods in the basement and pick out one that looks good." Medusa deadpanned, looking unimpressed. "What is the prophecy?"
Annabeth decided it was best not to anger her anymore and dutifully repeated the prophecy that had haunted her dreams since Jason retrieved his memories.
"You think I'm one of the seven?" Percy asked once she was done.
Annabeth huffed while Jason replied, "We originally were going to bring three Greek demigods to the Romans and let them fill the remaining spots but this morning we got another prophecy tell us to get you."
"Romans?" Percy asked and looked to his mother.
"There is a camp just like the Greek one here but in California. It is filled with children of the Roman aspects of the gods and goddesses." She supplied shrugging.
"How do you know of them?" Annabeth asked looking weary; she didn't seem to like not knowing something.
"Please girl," Medusa rolled her eyes. "I've been around long enough to know of the Romans. Several of them have even killed my sisters before."
"So," Percy started, trying to pull it back to the main topic. "You want me to go on a quest with six other demigods – who will no doubt like me as much as toddlers like vegetables—to Greece and probably Rome to defeat a crazy old goddess on a power trip."
"Don't forget her trigger happy army of monsters and giants." Jason added unhelpfully.
"Yes and her trigger happy army." He looked between the two expectant faces and burst out laughing. "Like hell I'm going to do that!" He got a look from his mom for his language but she said nothing.
"But there are two prophecies!" Annabeth sputtered, "You have to!"
"What Annabeth means," Jason grabbed Annabeth's hand to calm her. "IS that you need to come because not only do our camp's lives hang in danger but so does every ones else's in the world."
"Why should I go on a suicide mission for gods that have done nothing but cast my mother and I out my whole life?" Percy asked re-crossing his arms over his chest.
Annabeth looked like she's about to argue when Percy's mother's hand comes to rest on his shoulder. "Would you two mind if I speak with Percy for a moment?" Before they can answere she leads Percy in the house and closes the door.
"As much as I despise the idea of doing anything for those wretched gods, I believe your should go." She takes off her glasses and looked him in the eyes to show how serious she was.
Percy looked at her defiantly and replied with one word, "Why?"
Medusa sighed and sank down in one of their kitchen chairs. "I have always taught you to do right. To prove them all wrong in thinking you are a monster and this is no different." Percy started to argue and she holds a hand up. "If you are to refuse just because of your father you will be condemning billions of people to death. Can you live with that on your conscience?"
"I'm sure they will be able to figure it out." Percy grumbled, looking down at the floor.
"And loose one of the most powerful demigods they have never known?" Medusa raised an eyebrow. "Will they really be able to?"
Percy let out a resigned sigh. "You saw how they looked at me when they found out I was your son. They will all seem me as a monster no matter what I do."
Medusa smiled sadly as she stood and walked up to her son. She took his own glasses off before tilting his face so they were looking eye to eye. "Then prove them wrong. Go with them and show them you are more than a monster and a god's son. Show them you are a brilliant warrior who will easily kick their butts if they think any less of you."
Percy gave her a smile that lit up his sea green eyes before she added, "Now go pack yourself a duffle. I'll keep our guests entertained." Percy grabbed his glasses from her and slipped them on before jogging off to his room.
He grabbed a medium sized duffle from under his bed before stuffing it with toiletries, a sweatshirt, a pair of pants, and a few shirt and short combos. He also grabbed an extra beanie and pair of glasses (just in case). He went to his stockpile of nectar and ambrosia and threw some into the bag (assuming the demigods would have more with them if he needed it) then he went and put on his watch that turned into a shield. His half-brother, Tyson, had made it for him along with a full set of armor (speaking of which he should grab that) as a thank your for all of the help they gave him.
He had found the poor Cyclops when he was fourteen. Tyson didn't know what to do or where to go and out of sympathy for a fellow misunderstood monster Percy and his mother had taken him in, which was when they had found out about his lineage. That summer Percy had snuck him into their father's forges and gotten Tyson an apprenticeship with a wise old Cyclops who was thinking of retiring soon. As soon as he could Tyson made Medusa a bracelet and matching necklace and Percy his armor and shield as a thanks. The shield was his favorite because on it was pictures of his and Tyson's adventures from when Tyson lived with him.
Smiling at the memory Percy grabbed his decent sized duffle that housed his armor and the duffle he had just filled before checking the room one last time. Seeing he needed nothing else he made his way back to the backyard. As a split-second decision he grabbed a picture from their fireplace mantle that featured him, his mom, and Tyson gardening. He placed that in his bag before finally exiting his house.
Outside his mom, Jason, and Annabeth seemed to be having an intense three way staring contest. "They don't look very entertained." Percy teased standing and looking between the three.
"I would have juggled but I seem to have forgotten my pins inside." Medusa joked back.
He smiled at her and gave her a huge hug. "I'll be back before you know it begging for sandwiches and waking up later than should be possible." He whispered to her as they embraced.
"Be careful my little snakelet." She whispered back, kissing his temple. "And remember…"
"Don't stone unless you know." Percy finished for her, referring to the little chant they made when he was a kid. He had gone through a phase when he wanted to turn anyone who annoyed him into stone. His mom would always tell him not to stone them unless he knew they were bad and over the years it had shortened into a small rhyming chant he would repeat under his breath every time he got to angry.
"Bye mom."
"Bye baby boy."
He gave her one last squeeze before turning to the demigods. They had luckily turned, sensing the private moment, and were now facing toward the trees.
"I assume we are going to have to do some bush whacking to get back to your ride?" He asked and they whirled around.
"Uh yah, it's a few miles that way." Jason awkwardly replied pointing behind him.
"Let's get going then." Percy announced and made a gesture for them to lead the way.
They took a glance back at Medusa before turning and stomping off the way they had come. Percy threw a wink over his shoulder at his mom before following them at a much quieter pace since he knew the surroundings.
"So how are we getting to the Romans if they are in California?" Percy asked after a moment of silent hiking.
Jason glanced surprised at him, as if he had already forgotten he was there, "Oh my friend Leo, he's a child of Hephaestus, built a flying warship. He'll be the other Greek coming with us."
"A flying warship? I like his style." He praised, "So when are we leaving then?"
It was Annabeth who answered this time. "We were planning on leaving tomorrow morning so unless you have anything else you need to do?" Percy shook his head and she looked relieved. "Good then tomorrow morning it is."
The rest of their trip was spent in silence; the only reprieve being when they introduced him to Argus who Percy decided was a pretty awesome guy. Percy was glad it was a short trip and not before long they were parked in front of a small hill. The sun was going down by then and Annabeth looked up at it as if it had personally offended her as they approached the top of the hill.
"You OK there buttercup?" Percy asked, glancing at the sun himself.
She gave him a look for the nick name but answered, "It's dinner time," as if that explained it perfectly.
"You don't like food?" He joked as he got his first look at the camp. He had to hand it to them, the gods might be jackasses but they knew how to decorate.
"I was trying to keep you on the down low since there is going to be an uproar when they find out an unknown untrained demigod is taking their 'rightful place' on the quest of all quests." She explained and Percy huffed.
"Hey I'm trained! Quite well I'll have you know." Both Jason and Annabeth looked skeptical but didn't say anything and if Percy stuck his tongue out at them when they turned back around, well that's his business.
They led him to an open air amphitheater where a large amount of noise was coming from. "Just stay quiet and respectful." Annabeth hissed as they entered the building.
As soon as he set foot in the room all eyes were on him and everyone was silent, probably half because he was unknown and half because he was wearing sunglasses at night which Percy knew made him look like a total tool.
"Annabelle! Jonathan! What is this?" A voice asked and Percy looked up to see what could be nothing else but a god. By his attire, hangover look, amount of power radiating off him, and his reputation in the myths Percy guessed to be Dionysus.
"Uh Mr. D this is the demigod we were sent to retrieve today?" Annabeth offered and he seemed to think about it. "Come here boy." He commanded after a moment and Percy had to grit his teeth as to not say something sassy back. "What's your name boy?"
"Percy Jackson." Percy grumbled back, not appreciating the god's tone.
"Hey! Speak clearly when you're taking to me and take off those ridiculous glasses; you are not a pop star Peter Johnson." Dionysus glared at him and Percy couldn't help the maniacal grin that spread across his face.
"You want me to take my glasses off? Well I could never refuse a god." He replied, smile still in place, as he reached up and grabbed the rim of his glasses.
"NO!" Annabeth exclaimed taking a step forward before blushing and clearing her throat. "I mean, Percy can't do that."
"And why not?" Dionysus drawled raising an unimpressed eyebrow.
Annabeth stepped up and whispered something to him— assumed it was about his mom—and Dionysus looked at him with an uncharacteristic interest. "Well isn't that unexpected. Fine keep them on. DO you know your godly parent?"
"Why?" Percy knew his father was powerful and would rather keep that knowledge as a wild card against them.
"They sit and house by godly parent." Jason explained and Percy noted he didn't include himself as one of them. "Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Ares, Apollo, Hephaestus, Artemis, Aphrodite, Hermes—who also houses the unclaimed—Athena, Demeter, and Dionysus." He pointed at each table as he said the name.
"There are also new tables for minor gods and goddesses and one for Hades' children." Annabeth added.
"So you unclaimed boy?" Dionysus asked him, now faking disinterest.
"No I know who my sperm donor is." Percy rolled His eyes and headed to one of the few completely empty tables. As soon as he sat down a chorus of gasps escaped the campers.
Percy decided it was going to be a long night.
Disclaimer: Don't own nothin'
1. I know that in the myths Medusa turns herself to stone when she sees herself but I thought it would be sad if she was never allowed to look in her babies eyes so I decided that it would be a two negatives make a positive type thing where they can look in mirrors and at each other (though they don't do it often).
2. I want Percy to be a sassy lil s**t now that he didn't have to be the good boy for the camp so you will see that more now that he isn't under the watchful eyes of his mommy.
3. I want to put more thought and description in this than I have in any story I have done before so chapter updates will take longer than for my other stories I do.
4. I don't have a beta right now so sorry for the mistakes and on a happier note if you want to be my beta just contact me through comment or PM. You can do it for just this story or AWCHF or for any one shot I might do. Just tell me.
