Fabian POV:

Everyone stood in the lounge, chatting aimlessly. Well, most of us anyway. If you were me, you were eyeing the door nervously, anxiously waiting to see if the door would open to reveal a certain American. As far as anyone knew, no one had spoken or seen Nina since last year, not even Eddie, and they lived in the same city. Amber continued to make it out like it was my fault that Nina wasn't back.

"You didn't go to visit her, Fabian," she snapped. "Girls will take that very seriously, especially since you live on different continents and all your contact happens over the phone. It makes girls think that you do not want to go out with them anymore. The reason she is not here is because you can't fork up enough money to go to America. It's all your fault Fabian Rutter!"

"Amber, tickets are very expensive, and-" I began. I was cut off by the squeak of the door hinges.

"Nina?" everyone said at once.

The beautiful American stepped into view for those of us who couldn't see her from where we were in the lounge.

"Hey guys," she said, smiling at us. It didn't quite meet her eyes.

Something was off with her. There was a kind of emptiness in her eyes, like she was drowning in sadness. That's when I noticed, and I slapped myself for not noticing sooner. Nina's eyes were blue. This girl's eyes were an almost red color, but the red was mixed with a hazel hue. It looked like she had captured the color of autumn and placed them into her eyes.

Apparently, Patricia noticed me, and the goth pixie had no thought to stop herself and just wonder in silence. "Nina, what's up with you eyes?"

Nina shifted her gaze to Patricia and it seemed almost harsh. Patricia flinched. "What do you mean?" Nina asked. Her voice sounded indifferent, but her eyes said, butt out if you know what's good for you.

"Uh, your eyes are different," Patricia said after a minute of careful consideration of her answer.

Nina cocked her head to one side, a dangerous gleam in her eye. "Contacts," she answered shortly.

"Contacts?" Amber asked.

"Yes, Amber, contacts," Nina said. Her voice was calm, but you could tell that she was trying to keep her composure. Nina continued speaking before Amber could ask another question. "I just needed a change, Ambs. 'Kay?"

Amber nodded wordlessly.

"Good. I'll be staying in the attic from now on," she said, grabbing her bag and proceeding to carry it up the stairs to the attic. "What?!" Amber asked before we could try to save her.

"Why are you going to be in the attic? It's dark, musty, dank, and has nothing but bad memories from past experiences if you ask me." Nina tensed. She turned to face Amber.

"Well, it's a good thing I didn't ask you, huh?" With that, she continued walking upstairs to her new home.

"Well. That was… unexpected," Jerome said, finally breaking the silence.

Everyone mumbled their agreement.

"There is no way that was Nina. It has to be some kind of evil alien twin that captured the real Nina, hid her, and assumed her place to take control," Alfie said.

"And those were definitely not contacts. I've seen contacts, I've worn contacts, and those were definitely not contacts."

"Ease up, guys. It's not like we were exactly welcoming. All we did was bombard her with questions," Eddie countered.

Everyone considered the statement abashedly. "Great. Now that we've got that out of the way, we just have to send Fabian in there," Jerome said.

"Yeah," I said. "Wait, what?!"

"Come on, Fabian. You just have to go and welcome her properly."

"Why me?" Amber stepped up and glared at me. "Because you are most likely the reason why she is behaving so odd, and you are her boyfriend. If you are not man enough to go up there and say hello, I cannot say what will become of your relationship. And that's saying a lot. So, go up there and welcome the girl.

I went upstairs. Taking a deep breath with the rest of the house at my back. I knocked. This is stupid, I thought. There is no way she'll be able to hear me all the way up there.

Just as I was about to turn around and push my way through the crowd, Nina opened the door.

"Yes?" she said.

I froze. "H-how did you know I knocked?" I stuttered.

"Um, I heard you knock," she stated, as if the most obvious thing in the world. "

"But there's no way you could've heard me rom all the way up there," I said.

She sighed. "Sound travels, Fabian," she said. "Do you need something, because I'm a little busy right now."

"I'll help," I said, trying to step into the attic hall.

"I'm fine," she said, blocking the doorway.

I frowned. "It's really not any trouble at all."

Her eyes flashed dangerously.

"I'm fine, Fabian. Thank you," she snapped.

With that, she stepped into the hall and shut the door in my face. I

ignored the snide comments from Jerome as I pushed back through the crowd, not upset, just determined. What's wrong, Nina? Why are you so different?

Nina POV:

I waited until I heard Fabian's footsteps fade away before I sighed and headed back up the stairs to my new room.

My phone buzzed in my back pocket. I grabbed it and read the message: R they suspicious?

I bit my lip before responding: It's nothing I can't handle

K, was all I got in response I turned off my phone with a sigh and collapsed on my bed.

If only I could tell you guys, I thought.
