Chapter 00 - Prologue
Carrie tried to calm herself as she pushed the buttons on her phone, but her hands wouldn't stop shaking. Finally, after a few more attempts, she entered the correct sequence and it began to ring. She waited for the call be answered, but each moment felt like it was taking far too long, almost an infinity for each second. She quickly glanced up at the officer sitting across from her, his face lined with concern as he watched her from across the room.
"Come on. Pick up, please." she said out loud, her voice quivering as she spoke. She fought back her tears as she waited for the phone to be picked up.
Finally, it was answered. "Carrie, what's wrong? It's three in the morning."
"Mom... I... Dad is..." She said into the phone, trying to form the words but they got stuck in the back of her throat. Saying the words, explaining what had happened to him, would just make it too real. She's was not ready for that. Maybe if she didn't believe it, if she didn't accept it, then this wouldn't become her reality. But, deep down, she already knew, she already watched it happen inside her mind, even before the cops arrived, but she still pretended like she didn't know. Now, she could cry, could be sad, and be in pain. She let the tears start to flow.
"Honey, calm down. What's going on?" Her mother's voice started to sound anxious, partly because Carrie's not answering, but also because she never called her mom. "Carrie, please answer me. You're scaring me."
Her hands began shaking more, and a pain in her chest started to form. Her head dropped and her grip on the phone loosened until it fell, bouncing off the coffee table and onto the floor. The officer, the one that delivered the news, moved from the chair that was opposite Carrie and picked up the phone. He tried to hand it back to her but she wouldn't take it. Her mom's voice echoed from the phone's speaker, and she kept trying to get Carrie to answer her. The officer finally replied to Carrie's mother's calls and exited the living room, explaining that Carrie was alright but there had been an accident.
As if sitting up took too much strength, Carrie collapsed to the side and she pulled her knees up to her chest, pressing the palms of her hands against her face. How could this have happened? Dad was supposed to come home early because it was movie night. The tears started to roll down her cheeks again, growing stronger with each passing moment. She felt the softness of a blanket as it was placed on top of her, but didn't say anything. The officer squatted in front of Carrie.
"I told your mother what happened." He waited for her to say something but she didn't, just continued to cry.
"She's coming to get you. She said she will leave right away and get here as fast as she can." Another pause, waiting for her to answer. Again she didn't.
"I'll stay here and wait with you until she arrives. So don't worry..." He went quiet for a moment, not saying anything. Maybe he felt awkward around crying girls. Then he stood up, "I'm just going to make a call..."
He left again, the sound of the door opening and closing breaking up the silence of the house. She still didn't movie. She remained where she was with her hands pressed against her face. Images of her father danced through her mind: his smile, his cheeky grin when he's being silly, even his stern looks. It was all there, locked in her memory. It was now the only place she'd ever be able to see her father. He'd never walk through the front door, or tell her that she needed to go outside more, or anything else. He was dead. She continued to cry, harder and louder, and eventually the darkness of sleep pulled Carrie into it's arms like the warm blanket she clutched. This is one time she was happy to pass out, and this time, she wished that the darkness wouldn't release her. Ever.
AUTHOR'S NOTES:
So I'm trying something a little different. I've met a but of lovely Teen Wolf OC story writers, and figured that I'd give it a show. I'm starting the story off with sad, but I promise there will be happy in the first chapter! Enjoy lovelies.
EDIT 06/2014: Revamped the first 11 chapters by changing it to a third person point of view, and removing the switching POV's. So, if you want, give it a re-read and let me know if you notice any differences or any new thoughts! I hope these changes make the rest of the story a better read for your all. xoxo
I also would like to give a big shout-out to redconstance (her story is Beast of Burden, so go give it a read. It's an amazing Stiles/OC story), for all her work in keeping me motivated to get this revamp done, and for being my beta. Thank you babe!
