Darkness covered him. It covored him like the water of the river he jumped in. He couldn't see. He couldn't hear. He couldn't feel anything. "Am I dead?" Sunil asked himself quietly. "Did Vinnie kill me? I never got to say goodbye to Pepper... I never told her how I felt... I never told her my secret... I don't know what's going on anymore... who am I? ... what am I..."

Sunil felt the darkness lift from him. He felt... cool... he felt... safe. The anthro mongoose gently blinked open his eyes to see lights. He sat up and looked around. He was in a hospital... and he was in a bed. Sunilfelt his heart quicken with fear. "Did they find out my secret?" He whispered fearfully. "Did they know I'm a monster?" The door opened.

"Good morning Mr Nevla." A docotr said. Sunil nodded. "Hello sir." "it's good to see you awake." "Where am I?" Sunil asked. "You're in the hospital." The doctor replied. "Ms Pepper Clark found you this morning on the side of the river." Sunil sighed with relief. they didn't know his secret.

"How long will I be here?" Sunil asked. The Doctor looked at his chart. "Well," He said. "You may be here for a few weeks." "A Few weeks!?" The doctor blinked. "Is there a problem." "Well, I feel just fine!" Sunil fibbed. he got up from his bed and stood. "See..." "Just as he got on his feet and lifed his arms in the air, an extremely sharp, agonizing pain came to his shoulder. He screamed and sat back down quickly.

The doctor shook his head. Sunil looked to see where he had been shot by vinnie. 'Dammit!' He scolded himself in his head.

"Mr parks." A voice said. The doctor, mr parks, answered. "Yes?" "A Woman named Pepper Clark is here to see Sunil Nevla." "Bring her in." "Yes sir." The doctor walked out of the room as Pepper ran inside the room. She quickly ran to Sunil's side of the bed.

"Sunil! Are you ok?! What happened?! Who shot you?!" "Pepper," Sunil said firmly. "Calm down. I'm fine." "I'm just so worried about you Sunil." Pepper said gently. Sunil smiled. "I just want you to be safe... even if you do act weird sometimes." 'You have no idea.' Sunil thought in his head. Pepper gently put her hand on Sunil's forehead. He smiled warmly. Pepper smiled back. Sunil felt his heart skip a beat. He breathed deeply. "Pepper." he said. "I have something very important to tell you." "I have something to tell you also." Sunil blinked. "Well, you go first."

"Ok," Pepper said, smiling. "Sunil. I want you to meet my new boyfriend, Russell!" Russell, the librarian in town, came in the room. Sunil's mouth dropped open wide. His heart shattered into millions of pieces. It felt like it had ben crushed and stomped on.

Russell smiled at the shocked mongoose. "Hello, Mr Nevla." Sunil said nothing. He was so heart broken... and so hurt... he just couln't say anything. He gulped and forced a smile. "Hello... R-Russell." He stammered. Sunil and Russell never really got along. They both hated each other.

"Russell was so kind and compcompassionate." Pepper said. Russell smiled smugly at Sunil. 'He's enjoying this, isn't he?' Sunil said in his mind.

"Well," Russell said suddenly. "Me and Pepper must be going. I promised her that I would take her on a ride in my new car." He lifted Pepper off her feet and walked out the door.

Sunil lied down, staring at the cieling. The pain he felt in his shoulder was nothing compaired to the pain he felt in his heart.
