DreamWorks Dragons: Defenders of Berk

A Banished Beast

Chapter 27

Hiccup smiled and sighed in relief, watching as the Banshee continued its flight around the village.

"Glad that's over." He stated, patting Toothless on the head who cooed with a toothless grin in response. The sound of flapping wings caused them to looked behind and watch as the other dragon riders landed. They too watched as the Banshee flew around Berk, not long ago witnessing their friend actually train the thing.

"How did you know?" Fishlegs questioned. The amount of curiosity within him bursting at the seams, but he didn't show it.

"Pure and utter assumption." Hiccup replied, turning Toothless to the side so he didn't have to crank his head while talking to them.

"What?!" Astrid exclaimed, half angry that Hiccup had willingly put himself in danger based off of a guess.

Hiccup caught on quickly to the tension not just with Astrid, but with his father too, and held his hands in defense as he further explained.

"With good reason though. Back in the cave, when I was trapped in that cocoon, the Banshee did something that shocked me. It created a bond, like I have with Toothless. It made me put my hand up so that it… he could place his head on my palm."

"That's demented." Ruffnut commented.

"But cool…" Tuffnut added, both he and his sister smiling at each other.

"Hiccup, he was controlling you." Stoick reasoned.

"Exactly, which means he did it willingly." Hiccup replied.

The Banshee shrieked and landed near the others, but far enough back so that the riders and their dragons have some space. It still didn't trust them probably as much as they didn't trust him.

Hiccup dismounted Toothless and began to slowly approach the blood drinker, Toothless taking a step with him and growling at the Banshee.

"Calm down bud." Hiccup reassured him, placing his hand on Toothless' snout and pushing back, telling him to stay there.

The Banshee leaned its head toward Hiccup, sniffing a little and causing Toothless to growl at the action.

"Toothless, I mean it." Hiccup restated. He turned his head back over and began to slowly approach the Banshee again.

"I don't think the Banshee is a horrible monster like we all make it out to be. I think it just might be misunderstood." Hiccup said as he walked closer, hands held out to show he wasn't any threat. The Banshee narrowed its eyes at Hiccup as he came closer. Stoick and the others tensed up as Hiccup didn't stop his approach.

"Hiccup, don't you remember what happened last time, that thing tricked you! What makes you think it won't this time?" Astrid explained.

"Because this time it's different; I know now Banshee's can be trained like other dragons, they're too prideful and stubborn." Hiccup began. "But they can be tamed, at least enough so that they won't attack us anymore." He stopped right in front of the Banshee, hand still held out, but he didn't look away. His eyes held confidence and trust; but the Banshee read his emotions a different way, a way that was foolproof. He could determine if Hiccup was lying by the rhythm of his heart. And Hiccup was being sincere.

The rogue dragon leaned forward and closed his eyes as his head rested against Hiccup's palm. A moment later and he retracted and flew off toward the mountain.

Hiccup watched him as he flew away, Toothless, prancing up beside and siting down on his butt, glanced up as well before peered at his rider with big eyes. He then smiled his toothless grin and nudged Hiccup; the boy giggled and patted the Night Fury's head.

"I don't get it," Fishlegs ranted, "I mean I do get it, but I don't get it."

He along with his friends were in the Great Hall, sitting down at their table eating supper while the moon shone brightly outside in the dark sky.

"How did you know the Banshee would react the way it did?" Fishlegs pried. Hiccup was sitting across from him sketching a picture of the Banshee into the Book of Dragons and adding in the facts and other resource pages about the dragon.

"I pieced together its behavior and came up with a conclusion." He said while not looking up from the page of the book.

"Based solely on opinion." Astrid retorted. Hiccup looked over at her.

"Hey, I was right wasn't I?"

"I still don't understand that dragon." Fishlegs stated, ignoring his friends as his mind was too occupied.

"There are a lot of things we don't know about the Banshee, and we may never really find out, but it's good to know there won't be any more attacks from him from now on." Hiccup replied.

"I still think that thing was pretty cool." Tuffnut commented, holding up his fork that had a large piece of chicken on it.

"You were scared to death of the thing." Ruffnut challenged.

"No I wasn't." Tuffnu argued.

"You all were scared of the thing; I was the only person here that stuck around when the going got tough." Snotlout gloated.

"What?" Tuff asked, utterly confused by the meaning of the last part.

"Snotlout, you were screaming like a little girl." Astrid corrected; putting her left arm up onto the table.

"Was not."

Hiccup shook his head and turned his attention back down to the Book of Dragons. He scribbled in some more lines and shaded some spots before finishing the page off.

The Blood Drinker

Do not act as a difference, but rather an equal.

High above the glowing village of Berk, the stars glittered brightly along with the moon. A single silhouette outlined itself in front of said stars, soaring in a circle with its wings at full length before dashing off to who knows where.

The Banshee roared before it disappeared into the night.

The End

Author's Note:

I realize I probably didn't answer all of the questions you guys have, that being the fault of my stupid writer's block that was the result of all the stress I was having last week, so if you guys want some answers, just pm me.

I'm not entirely sure when I'll start up Night Fury Down again, I still need some time before getting back into writing. I'm trying to avoid long periods of hiatus for you guys, but it's not working. I really do appreciate you guys for your patience, at least the ones who aren't planning on killing me with an axe or kidnapping me and sending me over to Berserker Island, I couldn't ask for a better audience and fellow fanfiction readers/writers.

Thank you again, and I hope you all have fun writing and enjoy the stories! I'll keep you posted on my progress in my profile.
