Katniss couldn't sleep.
It had been days since training began for the capital invasion; days since she last spoke to Peeta or Gale. Haymitch had continued to interrogate her, but it had just made her angrier.
"Why won't you just tell me what the hell is going on?" Haymitch sneered as Katniss studied the holo's map in Boggs' office.
"It's none of your business, Haymitch" Katniss snapped back. "Are you going to help me with this or not? We need to find a clear path-"
"The best help I can offer you is two well trained soldiers that you have just kicked out of your squad right before the biggest battle in history!" Haymitch threw his hands up in the air. "You can't do this without Peeta and Gale."
"I don't need anyone," Katniss stated firmly. "Boggs trusted me to do this, he believed in me. Why can't you?"
"I do believe in you Katniss, but that doesn't mean you're weak by accepting more help!" Haymitch leaned over the desk and looked at her earnestly. "Those two boys know you better than anyone. You have to let them come with you."
Katniss sighed and rolled her eyes. "I don't need Peeta or Gale. Don't mention it to me again." With that she looked down, and twisted Boggs' ring around her finger.
Katniss rolled over in her cot, rubbing her eyes as she flipped on her back. Her thoughts skipped to all the people she wanted to protect; Mom. Prim. Haymitch. Cinna. Cressida. Plutarch…Gale…Peeta-
With the final face that crossed her mind, Katniss sprang out of bed and threw on her training gear and running boots. After silently escaping from the compartment shared with her sleeping mother and sister, Katniss passed through the halls, watching how District 13 had began to buzz with the early morning security checks and workers. It must be around 6 AM, she thought to herself. Eventually making her way past the hospital, Katniss reached the outdoor training compound, where she had been nearly every day for hours. She watched as the pouring rain came down, and eventually took off sprinting, feeling the water whip her face and resist her strides.
Run away from this. Run away from all of this. Keep going. Keep going.
Eventually, Katniss returned to the compound, where she could see the soldiers through the rain in outdoor training with Lieutenant Paylor. Allowing herself one more moment of peace before returning inside, Katniss lifted her face to the rain, allowing it to wash away all the pain and rejection she was feeling from Peeta.
"Soldier!"
A sharp command snapped her out of her trance, and Katniss glanced around to find
Lieutenant Paylor running towards her.
"Where have you been?! Everyone's been going crazy looking for you!" Paylor exclaimed, grabbing Katniss by the arm and pulling her inside.
"I went for a run," Katniss whispered, still out of breath. Paylor dragged her through the halls of 13, people parting for the two of them along the way.
"You are not to leave the compound unless its under supervised orders Everdeen," Paylor urged. "You're too valuable."
Katniss continued hustling alongside her, her arm beginning to feel some pain as Paylor was holding it so tightly. Her hair and clothes were dripping, and her shoes squeaked. I must have been running for longer than I thought. "I'm sorry Lieutenant…what's going on?"
Paylor looked conflicted. "There are some new matters Coin would like to discuss with you."
Katniss' stomach dropped. "What new matters?" Paylor didn't respond, just picked up their pace a little faster.
Finally, they reached Coin's underground security room. Katniss noticed all of the machines were on full blast, with radio static and satellite images flickering across giant screens. She scanned the room for faces: Plutarch, Coin, Haymitch-
"Well thank god," Cinna caught up to the two of them.
Paylor released Katniss' arm. "Stay here for a minute," she said to Katniss, and with that went forward to discuss with the security team.
"Are you okay? What happened to you?!" Cinna gave her a quick hug.
"I'm fine, Cinna," Katniss hushed. "What's going on, why is everyone freaking out?"
"Katniss," Plutarch ushered her over. "There's something we think you should see."
Katniss walked slowly toward a computer screen, with Snow's face on it. Plutarch tapped a button and the video began playing.
"By now you all must know that we are about to engage in war. This is a war over our very ways of life, this is not a war about liberation. To those who will see this message in District 13, please know that our war is not with those who are willing to compromise rather than result to violence. With that being said, I am prepared to offer a deal. Deliver me only one member of District 13, and no blood will be shed. Deliver me Katniss Everdeen, and thousands of lives can be spared."
Katniss glanced up at Haymitch briefly. He put his hand on her shoulder.
"To Katniss Everdeen herself, if you do not follow through with this deal, the blood of thousands of innocents will be on your hands. You have 24 hours to respond." And with that, Snow smiled, and the screen went black.
Katniss shuddered out a breath quietly, her chest heaving.
"That's why this place was practically on lockdown," Coin explained. "We thought you saw the video and took off for the Capitol."
"You should probably go find your sister. She's at the hospital- she was worried sick about you. We can talk about this later," Haymitch told her.
Katniss nodded, turning on her heel and darting out of the room. She didn't want to start speaking then, because she would have allowed her thoughts to run away with her, spilling out like a broken dam.
As she moved through 13, she noticed Peeta through the open doors of the technology room, where Beetee worked. He noticed her too- their eyes caught for a brief second.
Katniss began hurrying her pace, as she could hear his footsteps following her.
"Katniss!" He called from behind her, anger in his voice.
She shook her head and continued jogging. Suddenly Peeta grabbed her arm and pulled her to the side of the hallway, which was full of a stream of people.
Katniss angrily shook his hand off her arm. "What do you want" she asked him quietly.
"I thought you had already accepted Snows offer," Peeta claimed.
"Well I haven't yet," Katniss clarified. "Just was out for a run to try to clear my head."
"Yet?" Peeta asked quietly.
Katniss looked at him with pleading eyes. "What do you expect me to do?" She whispered. "It's me for all of these people. You know I never wanted this-"
"You can't be serious!" Peeta whispered angrily. "He's going to torture you and kill you and make everyone watch."
"I'm sure you'd like that, wouldn't you" Katniss glared at him. "I'm surprised you aren't offering to drive me to the capitol yourself."
A range of emotions crossed Peeta's face. Anger. Hurt. "I thought I wasn't going to see you again. They sounded the alarms this morning-" He cut himself off and threw his hands in the air. "You don't have any idea how important you are to… this rebellion!" Peeta almost yelled.
Katniss' eyes began to burn with unwanted tears. "To this rebellion…" she whispered slowly, looking at the ground. "Right." But I'm not important to you…anymore.
After a brief moment of unspoken words, Katniss finally broke the silence. "Look, I don't have time for this right now, I have to go find Prim," Katniss said, backing away.
Grabbing her hand, Peeta pulled her back. "Swear to me you won't leave," Peeta stared her down, his nose cringing slightly and his brows furrowing with anger. "Katniss…Swear."
Katniss quickly pulled her hand from his. His touch is too much. "We'll talk later," Katniss, whispered. "Really, I have to go."
With that, Katniss whirled around, moving towards the hospital, leaving Peeta standing behind her.
What am I going to do?
