A/N: Written for the Indigo League Challenge, Pewter Gym – Trainer 1. Less than 300 words (with a 100 word leeway since I started with Squirtle) in an hour, and this was 299 words. :D

Also for SnowGlaceon on her (again belated) birthday. The first Gym Leader in XY, since I've been following (for once) the releases for the new episodes.

Viola's Shutter Defeat

Viola had never met a trainer like Satoshi. In fact, she had fully expected him to be another novice trainer, despite the praise her sister sung. After all, Pansy might be a trainer, but the potential she saw in trainers weren't often what it took to defeat a Gym Leader.

She was the first Gym that new trainers from Kalos came to in order to battle. She was also the most underestimated – but a battle soon put that right. But even those trainers came prepared – not like Satoshi, who had sailed from the winds of Masara Town to her doorstep with an age old Pikachu and a freshly caught Yayakoma, and he had put up a better fight than many of the novice trainers she faced.

She had not expected to lose though, and she did not, but even in defeat he faced her with fire and determination. And he returned to her. Within a day, with the help of the friends he had made not so long ago, he mastered a strategy against her. And he defeated her, even though she had expected another victory. Because his strategies were unconventional and based more on passions and bonds despite the type advantage that laughed in her face and he didn't use. The gap in experience barely showed: Pikachu may have won both battles, but Yayakoma had not been far behind and Satoshi had clearly bonded closely with the both of them.

She had faced many electric and flying types, but very rarely did her Viviyon fall. Very rarely did Viola find herself wrapped in her own webs, but Satoshi's fighting soul had blinded her, and the flash had gone off.

Her shutter victory became a shutter defeat, but she couldn't bring herself to be disappointed, because it wasn't often she was blinded by the flash of her own camera.
