Authors note: Okay everyone I'm sorry for forgetting about this story and I'm going to try very hard from now on to do more regular timed updates. Which is possible because I'm on summer break now from Uni. Thank you to everyone who's followed and has added this story to their favourite list. And a huge thank you to Foxfire832001 for reviewing the last chapter. Now on with the story! Disclaimer: I own nothing from the two shows.
A few weeks after the incident where she almost quit Sara had some time off, she decided to spend some time in Vegas with her mum but also planned a trip to Quantico for a few days to go see Reid. She understood that Reid had been having a bad time at work and was taken hostage by a man on his last case. After a security check and vetting by the FBI guard Sara was allowed into the building where Reid worked. Not being able to resist a peak she stopped on the fourth floor to see the FBI crime lab. It looked okay but Sara realised it had nothing on the number one lab in the country where she worked. The visit putting her in a good mood she journeyed up the last two floors where the BAU offices and bullpen were. Walking in Sara took in the sight. The room was bustling with people phones and the tapping of keyboards. Teams were in briefings and discussing cases or personal things. It was easy to see the desks of Spencer and his team. As the number one team they had the pick of the desks in the centre of the office. The desks were occupied by a very muscly mixed race man, Morgan, Reid had said and a pale nervous looking brunette. That must be the newbie Emily. There were two blonds. One in a black skirt suit and one in a bright pink ensemble, JJ and Garcia, Sara reminded herself as Reid had told her once who everyone was. That's when Sara spotted Reid coming out from the break room.
Maybe it was the fact that she'd been working In Vegas too long or because it was her job to notice things like this. But it was in the second she saw Reid she knew full well he was using some sort of drug. She looked at the profilers. Did they not notice? The skin, the bags under the eyes, she guessed he'd been irritable. He looked like hell in short. It was as he was walking over he spotted Sara. After everything that had been going on Reid had forgotten about the old friend visiting him.
"Hey Sara, how are you?" Reid came over and gave her a hug, pretending like everything was okay. The team members who had been joking and laughing before had gone eerily quiet. As if they were walking on eggshells around him.
"So Reid are you going to introduce us to your friend?" Morgan asked. Sara saw the flash of annoyance across Reid's face before he replied.
"This is Sara Sidle. A friend of mine from Vegas." Sara waved at the team.
"Reid's told me all about you. Morgan, Prentiss, JJ and Garcia. And you must be Hotchner and Gideon." Sara pointed to the corresponding team member as Hotch and Gideon came out of their offices to see who the new arrival was. The team said their hello's back.
"So what is it you do Sara. Because Reid here hasn't told me." Prentiss asked. Truth be told he hadn't told the others, but they didn't say anything.
"I'm a CSI in the Vegas crime lab working the graveyard shift." Sara answered Prentiss' question. "Are we getting ready to go then?" She asked Reid quickly, who appeared to be preoccupied.
"Hot date tonight then pretty boy." Morgan tried to joke with Reid like he did before he was taken hostage, giving Sara a wink in the process. Sara gave the comment and wink one of her "Sara smiles" as Greg called them.
"No Morgan I'm just catching up with a friend." Reid snapped back at him. Sara stopped smiling and immediately knew in her mind her best friend from High school, the one who swore he would never even smoke let alone do any kind of hard drugs, was using. And that fact made her rather sad. As the team said goodbye to her and Reid, the two friends walked out the building. In her mind Sara made the focus of her few days here to help Reid as much as she could.
"So, how are things at the lab?" Reid asked, trying hard to be normal around Sara. The two had gone to his home and were enjoying take away from the local Chinese down the road. It served some great vegetarian food options for Sara and the house was great for the two to have dinner in peace.
"There good. I can't complain" Sara said. Despite the setting it was like there was an elephant in the room. A big fact drug using elephant. And it was making the conversation stunted. Reid didn't really want to talk and Sara could see he was making the effort for her. While she was giving short answers. She was too busy being concerned for her best friend.
"Is there a problem Sara?" Reid finally was beginning to lose it. "Because you're not really saying much."
"Spencer. I'm going to ask you a question and I want the truth." She paused for a moment. "Are you using drugs?" Reid seemed taken aback but tried to bluff his way out of it.
"I…I don't know what you're talking about." Reid stuttered.
"Spencer don't do this to me. I'm a CSI in Vegas. I see a dozen guys like you every day with some kind of addiction to drugs they are using. I know the signs. Irritability, the skin being paler than usual, the bags under your eyes."
"Stop it Sara!" Reid shouted at her. She remained silent for a moment. Watching her friend's features change slowly from one of anger. Contorted into one of pain and sadness. The first sob wracked Reid's body and Sara was at his side instantly calming him down in a hug. His tears soaked her shirt but she didn't care. Right now she wanted her friend to know she was there. When he finished crying he told her everything that happened in the barn between him and his captor Hankel. And most importantly showed her the bottles of Dilaudid he'd stolen from Hankel once he was dead.
"I'm not coping well Sara." He admitted to her.
"Reid admitting it is half the battle. You have people here who care about you and will be here every step of the way. From what I saw of your team they really care about you." Sara tried to get Reid to look up at her. "I'm here for the next few days. Hell I can be here for the next two weeks if that's what you need. As long as it takes for you to feel better." There was a pause and silence before Reid spoke to her.
"There's a support group for law enforcement officers to go to. If they need help. I'm happy to go but, can you come with me?"
"Of cause I will Spence." And Sara was true to her word. She stayed for almost all her holiday in the end leaving to go back to Vegas three days before she had to go back to the lab. She still wanted to spend some time with her mother. But in the days she'd been there Reid seemed to be on the mend. He'd gone to the counselling and appeared to be less dependent on the dilaudid which could only be a good thing. He'd made a promise to Sara that he would keep her informed of his progress. And as Sara watched the Quantico scene fall away on the plane she made a promise that if Reid ever needed her help she would always be there for him. After all he was one of her best friends.
