Chapter 14: The Warmth That Was Lost Part 2: Akashi's Thoughts

He blinked a few times trying to focus on the red liquid moving up in a tube in front of him but his vision was already blurring. He was feeling a little light-headedness and dizziness so he closed his straining eyes. Hearing nothing from the outside, his mind started to wander about a certain teal head girl on the other room. He's heart begins to pound violently as he thought about her condition. Just thinking about her, currently in pain and hurting, was making him uneasy. He struggled to breathe normally so he could relax and make his blood to flow normally. He listened to his heart beat, the rhythmic sound reminded him of a very familiar sound.

Thump. Thump. Thump.

From the outside of the gym he heard a hard tapping of an object to the floor. He went to the front door and a ball made its way to his feet. Familiar green, violet and blue heads turn to his direction.

"Akashi / Aka-chin/ Yo" they all said together. They have been in the basketball team for only few months but they were already placed in the first strings given their exemplary skills. Even though they all differ by a large margin in terms of personality, he did not have any problems dealing with them. From the Oha Asa freak, Midorima, to the glutton giant, Murasakibara, and to the airhead basketball idiot, Aomine, they all learned how to cope up with each other's whims and craziness.

He smiled to them and threw the ball to the green head who easily made his three point shot. Their practice went well after that. He heard his heart beating hard for they were all tired from their practice. He did not mind though. Playing basketball made him feel a different satisfaction every day. As he could do and attain everything he wanted easily, feeling a little muscle sore from a strenuous activity was a break from his usual flow. Basketball made him looked forward to every morning.

Later that year, Aomine introduced him to a teal head girl. She was very familiar to Akashi because he always sees her in the library. From her obviously weak body, it surprises him that she got herself to playing a brute sport. He watched as she tried hard to dribble the ball and push it to the basket but failing every time.

The ball made its way to his feet. He lifted it and faced the teal head. He handed her the ball and then he accidentally touched those soft hands again. "Just like in the library" he thought. He smiled to her and told her about a play style he was sure only the teal head could pull. From that day forward the teal head became part of their odd family.

After their first year, another odd member came. The yellow head model, Kise, who easily went up to claim a position beside them. Their lives became noisier after that but he did not mind. Their peculiar family is finally completed. With the exception of the teal head girl, they were labelled as the Generation of Miracles.

They were called as such because the talent they possess only comes once in a decade and it's a miracle that they would come all together in one generation. The world already elevated them to a high pedestal and made them something akin to gods. They were casted out from being normal teenagers to monsters inside and outside the hard court. They did not mind though because they have each other.

Far from being monsters, he sees every member as a child. He felt they needed his guidance in everything they do. Just like when they take their lunch in the rooftop every day which could be described as a chaotic mess. Kise will cry nonstop when Aomine get one hotdog from his lunch. Riot will ensue and in the course one of them will surely hit Midorima's bento. The green head will curse the two and all of their lunch will be wasted from fighting. Murasakibara will completely forget that he just consume all his lunch and will complain that he is still hungry. Tetsumi barely eats and most of the time will only bring a cup of vanilla milkshake. Anticipating this, he always brought a lunch enough for them to share. He will then lecture them about eating healthy foods, something he would never hear in his own household. Sometimes their lunch would end up with the two idiots running away from him.

When it comes to studying, he did not have problems with Murasakibara and Tetsumi especially with Midorima but with Kise and Aomine's case, they will always have a hard time doing their homework as they always ditch them for something else. He decided to schedule a study time for them after basketball practice. Midorima would help them for the materials and Tetsumi would convince the two idiots to come. The two always complain but would finish their task once Murasakibara end up telling them how stupid they are that even he had no problem doing their assignments. Their ego let them be manipulated easily after that. If that did not work anymore, he made sure to provide them some of his little personal persuasions.

He managed to organize a training camp for them at the beach. Kise and Aomine enjoyed the getaway and clearly did not see it as training especially when they begun teasing Tetsumi in wearing a pink garment for swimming. After it ended flat in his face, he especially enjoyed watching their indescribable faces after their little training with him.

Murasakibara for him was the easiest to handle yet the most unpredictable one in the group. He felt a little at ease around him since his childlike nature spark melancholy feeling around him. Tetsumi would ask the giant to teach him bake desserts for their group and he would enjoy watching the odd pair of bakers. He would hear the two of them telling they would crush the cookies repeatedly.

"You look enjoying yourselves Tetsumi" his voice stunned the two of them. They looked at him and he could see a little tint of pink forming in Tetsumi's pale cheeks.

After seeing Tetsumi acting a little out of character when they were making sweets, he could not help but smile and he would then join their odd antics.

"I'll be waiting for that cake if you won't share, I'll crush the both of you." He walked out of the kitchen after saying that but the smile on his face did not leave him especially when he finally eat the piece they made for him.

Midorima's overall oddity is what makes him the closest to him in the group. They could be considered not too far in intelligence and compassion. They would spend their time strategizing their game play and they would play shogi which he would undeniably win easily. The greenhead's desire to beat him inspires him to do better in their play. He could trust the green head if he have to leave the group for a while.

If he could find all the words to describe Tetsumi, it would take us to a perpetual hole before coming to an end. Ever since he accidentally touched her soft hand in the library, the teal head activated an unknown mechanism inside of him. It was not just a spark of interest but a mysterious yearning on the feeling of constant warmth emanating from her. Just like the warmth he only felt from his late mother.

His feelings got over at him than his logical mind, he immediately grab the opportunity to ask her for a commoner engagement which he masquerade as a summation for her punishments at first to ease his own personal tensions. Being an Akashi he could plan everything perfectly but his judgments was clouded by his overwhelmed feelings leading them to go to a museum and the tallest tower in town. He was dismayed with himself so he could not talk to the teal head but seeing her enthusiasm loosen him up. It was his first time enjoying little things around him.

Their date ended immediately when he sensed the group waiting for them in the park. They were clearly worried with the teal head's punishment. Even Midorima was worried even though he would not say that himself. They ended up having dinner in a restaurant nearby. As if nothing happened, they brought their usual fiasco with them. He saw how Tetsumi silently watched their group. He could sense her contentment and happiness with them together. The day ended well with him claiming the girl that he only desire in his life.

These are the happiest day of his life. How he wished that it will not end.

When their captain and coach left, he was left with a difficult responsibility. He accepted because he wanted to personally mold this family. He could already see that their talent will bloom more in the days to come. He was left alone to handle and developed their abnormal talents. He tried hard but it was clearly harder even for him to handle.

After his tiring meetings with the other school coaches, he went back to school so he could at least send the teal head home. It was too late for him so the teal head might already went home with the others. He was not allowed to feel tired. He must do anything for their team. If he could only see the teal head then his weariness will fade away but only silence met him in the gym. They were long gone now. He went home alone after that enduring the fatigue he tried to forget earlier.

One time, he went back early and saw the group in a nearby convenience store. He could see that they were enjoying eating popsicles. They were laughing, he wanted to go to them immediately but a text message from his father informing him to come home at once prevented him. He could only watch them from a distance.

"Where did I go wrong?" He could only thought of that as he watched Aomine leave them in the middle of a practice. He was sure that above all, being his partner, Tetsumi will be the most hurt. And so he decided to not go to an engagement to send her home. Feeling as Tetsumi wet his jacket by her tears broke him. It was clearly his fault. He could not guide them rightfully.

Days and weeks went by and he became too busy to be with his team. By the time he noticed the changes, it was already too late for them. They were already considered a broken mirror and it was too late for them to get fix. He saw how Tetsumi had the hardest time in their situation. He wanted to comfort her but he was too distressed to acknowledge it was his entire fault.

A game decided his fate with her. He saw her slowly breaking in front of him and that time he decided to cut the source of her misery.

"Akashi thinks we need to remove you from the first string" he saw her eyes widen to the statement. She looked at him so he tried hard to conceal any emotions inside of him.

"After today's match I admit he was right" the old man continued.

"B.,but coach, I still .. " she struggled to talk. He could see her knees shaking while she fought the tears wanting to escape her eyes. "..I could still play, I could do it." He closed his eyes not wanting to accept the scene in front of him.

"Look at it in the second and first strings point of view. They are trying so hard to be on your position but you are just mes –" he stared at their coach intently. He did not want to hear anymore from him.

"We need unnecessary conversations here. I will talk to her, coach, if you would excuse us" he said. The old man complies and left the two of them alone.

"You can't be a part of the first string anymore. You must understand how inconvenient you are to us" he said to her.

.. because I did not want you to hurt yourself anymore.

He saw the looks in her eyes. She was shaking badly and her eyes are now clouded by tears but she was trying hard not to let them fall. She opened her mouth but no sounds escape. She was desperately grasping for air. She desperately wanted him to take back what he said but he could not because it was for the better.

He remained silent throughout. He could not take it anymore and it might break him to see her like that so he walked straight to the door.

But he did not leave her. He stayed and listened to her cry as she pours all her hurtful feelings at the other side of the door.

"It's okay, no one will notice you losing air because no one will even bother playing with you" he heard her told the ball with her deadpan face. It hurts him to see her like that

He watched as the teal head went home not finishing the practice anymore. He saw her taking a ball with her. She went to the playground near her home and then she sat down on a swing. She stands up and then starts dribbling. She tried hard but she would always lose the ball. She left the ball in the playground. He picked it up and he watched her went home. When he was sure she fell asleep after crying so hard that night he place the ball in front of her door.

He could still believe in his team. He tried to talk to Aomine first. He saw him on a playground near his home but he was being pulled down by guys. He run towards him but the other guys already left him. He could deal with them later, he help Aomine first.

"T-tetsu, p-please pass the ball to me again" he heard him said while grasping for air. His eyes were now closed as he touched his hand. He saw Aomine smile.

"Tetsu.."

"I do not believe you are stronger than me so why would I need to follow you"

Akashi had no time to be pained from those words. He smirked to the purple head while his hand is holding the ball. After a few moments he points it to Murasakibara. His gesture was clearly showing a challenge to the purple head. After that confrontation, all hopes for the team was destroyed. Immediately after, Tetsumi resigned to the team. Her letter remains in his hands all throughout. He desperately seeks the warmth of the writer in that letter.

"In this world, winning is everything. You have to use every means to win, even using other people as a tool. For that matter, I am all you need because I am the strongest shadow that you could ever find."

There is only one person to blame for all the things that happened to them. He was the one who caused all their miseries. He could not handle the responsibility to guide them. He did not deserve them in the first place. He should be left alone.

After his outburst to Mayuzumi, he felt tired and could not do anything anymore so he decided to go home. For the first time he felt helpless.

When he was lying on his bed, he heard his phone. He did not want to read it first but he was feeling restless so he picked it up. He saw the message was from Mayuzumi. He read it anyway and he saw a hospital name in the message. He immediately stands up and went out of his room remembering it was the same hospital he sent Aomine to.

At the hospital, he went to the emergency ward and saw a basketball. He remembered the ball he left in front of Tetsumi's door. Something from the blood in the ball made his heartbeat increase. He was trying to convince himself that nothing bad happened. He went to the operating room and there he saw Tetsumi fighting for her life. He was being told to go out of the room. He talk to the doctor and ask them what happened. The doctor told him about the accident and he said that Tetsumi needed blood transfusion. The doctor did not need to say anything. He immediately made them check his blood.

He woke up and heard familiar sounds outside his room. He looked outside and saw the other GoM visiting Tetsumi. He was still feeling dizzy from all the blood taken from him so he decided not to talk to them. He also did not know what to say to them. He could only watch them from the distance.

He then received a call from their coach saying that they needed the first string on a game. He knew the other GoM will not be able to play after what Mayuzumi did to them. Despite having his blood taken, he went to the game alone. He played with the second strings and led Teiko in another victory.

After the other members went home, he stayed inside the locker. He could hardly move and breathe. He tried to stand up but felt dizzy. He was about to fall down when a pair of hands catch him. He could not see clearly but he saw a blur of green.

"Really Akashi? And they all say I'm the tsundere?" he heard him say.
