Not Alone

Harry leaned back in his seat, staring out the window blankly. The scenery was pretty, in a country sort of way; the atmosphere had an air of tranquility to it. Miles of land seemed to stretch on and on, a never-ending vast green blanket. But with farmland, of course there'd be the inevitable presence of cows and the oppressive stench of manure. It had what stirred him from his nap a few miles back. What a wake-up call. The Cullens plus Harry had arrived at Seattle about an hour before and were currently on the way to Forks. A strange name for a town, Harry mused, wondering if their next stop would be cutlery-related, too.

The car was otherwise silent except for the soft music playing as a backdrop from the high class, state of the art radio. Nothing but the best for the Cullens. Seriously, Harry had never even seen a limo before but here he was, strapped in a Mercedes. You could bet Harry gawked when he saw just how many cars the Cullens owned, and all expensive, brand-name ones, too! Crazy, the lot of them. Although he guessed that must have happened when you have loads of money and nothing to really spend it on.

Harry knew Jasper knew he was awake, but the brunet just tilted his knees toward the door handle, wrapping his arms loosely around them. That was what he liked about Jasper: he was aware that not all silences were uncomfortable but could be appreciated as well.

Hmm, it started to rain, the droplets lightly hitting the windshield. The tiny beads of water chased each other across the window. He stared, mesmerized. From the reflection, Harry could see Jasper's hand detach itself from the steering wheel to press a button. Harry closed his eyes briefly when a rush of warm air blew in his face. A corner of his mouth perked up. Little acts like this displayed Jasper's quiet considerate nature, turning on the heater when the vampire couldn't even discern the temperature anymore.

A black blob passed by his vision. Harry startled, hand hitting the passenger door as his head whipped back, and hissed as he cradled his stinging hand.

"Stop the car!" Harry reached out, latching onto Jasper's arm urgently.

"What?" Jasper abruptly veered the car to the side of the road, running over a bush and narrowly missing a tree.

Harry yanked his door open, diving headfirst into the steady rain, running back to where he had seen the dark blur. Behind him, a click signified Jasper stepping out as well.

"Harry!" Jasper stood by the car, staring at Harry, clothes already starting to stick to his body. He frowned when he received no reply.

Harry continued forward, crouching down in front of the big black dog curled up under some shrubbery. It opened its murky brown eyes, narrowing them at him in curiosity. It lifted its upper lip, displaying sharp canines in warning when Harry got too close. Harry stopped his advance, raising his right hand, and only when the dog leaned forward and sniffed did he pet the dark, wet fur. He furrowed his eyebrows when he felt the body shivering uncontrollably.

Turning his head, Harry looked pleadingly at Jasper, shuffling closer to the giant dog. Frown deepening at what Harry's actions implied, Jasper shook his head, crossing his arms over his chest.

"That mutt is stepping nowhere near my car." The dog growled lowly, snarling at the vampire as if he understood.

Harry shrugged his shoulders. "Technically, it's Carlisle's car."

Jasper didn't deign that a response, revving up the intensity in his glare. Harry bit his bottom lip, eyes widening and watering purposefully.

A couple minutes later had Jasper broodingly hunched over the steering wheel, stubbornly silent as he drove, scowling as he caught sight of the duo in the backseat. Harry's snickering filled the car as the dog draped himself over his lap, wagging his tail in satisfaction now that he was out of the pouring rain.

"Isn't Leo Potter just adorable?" Harry cooed as he rubbed said dog behind the ears.

Jasper groaned, dropping his head with a thump, horn blaring loudly. God, he already named him?

The Cullens were a bit hesitant about letting the dog stay, but Esme and Carlisle were passionate, obliging people and didn't take much effort to convince them. Alice didn't mind, and Edward barely gave Leo a glance before giving a firm command to never let him near his bedroom. Emmett was interested in trying to wrestle with the admittedly large dog. Rosalie, on the other hand, did not take the new additional member too well. When Leo walked through the door of their new house, she froze and stared for a good minute, mouth stretched in a permanent sneer, wrinkling her nose, complaining about the horrid smell. Harry chose that moment to enter, arms filled with bags, Jasper right behind him carrying two suitcases.

"You're vampires! Just don't breathe!" Rosalie turned her death glare on him, turned on her heel, and stomped away. Harry thought that burning red flames and tiny devil horns would have completed the image.

"Don't listen to the mean lady," Harry said as he kneeled down, lavishing attention on Leo, who preened under the soothing rubs, "you can stay here for as long as you like."

Harry gave one last pat to the head before he stood, picking up the dropped bags and delivering them to his designated room. As he trudged up the stairs, he admired the new house. It wasn't bad, but he would bet his left hand that after Esme was done with it, it would look even more incredible.

Jogging down the stairs, Harry helped Carlisle place all of the kitchenware in the cupboards and drawers. Taking them out of the labeled boxes, Harry handed them to the vampire who put them away.

"So, Harry," Carlisle said, glancing at him as he tucked the plates neatly in a lower cupboard. Harry hummed, pulling out some pots and pans. "How do you feel about vampirism?"

Harry raised a brow, giving him an analyzing look though he highly doubted Carlisle had a sudden interest in draining him dry. "Sorry, no offense or anything, but the thought about sucking the life out of something doesn't really sit well with me."

"None taken. If someone told me years ago that blood would become an essential part of my diet, I would have asked my father to purify them."

Silence descended upon the two as they worked in peaceful quiet.

"Are you excited to be attending school on Monday?"

Harry shrugged. "It'll be interesting to experience what a normal school is like. I just hope that the people won't be too similar, but I highly doubt that."

Just then, a loud growling could be heard along with an annoyed shout.

"Harry!" said person lifted his head, left Carlisle with a quick "I'll be back," and hurried up the stairs. When he entered Jasper's room, he found the vampire clutching a plaid shirt, glaring at the black dog sitting on his bed.

"Jasper?" Harry stepped closer to the blond only to have the clothing shoved in his face. Now that he looked closer, the shirt wasn't fully intact but in strips with holes torn between.

"He ripped my clothes!" Jasper gestured to the suitcase on the floor, clothes strewn around carelessly.

"Leo," Harry started in exasperation, placing his hands on his hips, "you can't do this."

The dog stared up at Harry innocently, tail drooping onto the bed sadly, letting out a pitiful whimper. Harry looked at the big, brown eyes that looked at him so pleadingly and felt himself melt just a little. Jasper scowled. The nerve of that mutt—

Harry suddenly dropped to his knees and hugged the dog, craning his neck to glance at Jasper. "Oh, it was an accident. Please forgive him?"

Jasper clenched his hands tightly, a dark cloud forming above his head when he caught sight of that toilet-licker smirking smugly at him over Harry's shoulder. This was war.
