He'd gotten her back to Alexandria, Saddiq looked at her injuries. The burns, scrapes, and gash had all been treated and he told her that she needed to take the night at least as he was sure she was in shock but she didn't want to, she needed to find Ricks body.
Daryl and Angel didn't know how to act towards each other. They both needed comfort, but they both wanted to comfort the other. He'd stayed in the corner of the room as she was stitched up, her body not flinching at the needle, her eyes soulless. She handled things like this differently from him. She knew he needed some time to be alone, but all she wanted was someone else there during this, but she would let him have his time. She's the one who didn't save Rick, she didn't deserve comfort. Angel couldn't even look at him as she left the medical house.
He thought she needed time alone, so he gave it to her, going back to their room, in their house…that they had once shared with Rick and Michonne. It was weird being there after so long. Sitting down on the bed he could hear Judith asking Michonne where her dad was, and the tears started forming in his eyes again.
She had gone to go and get Gracie, knowing Aaron was still recovering from his lost hand and she took the girl back to her own house. Angel felt guilty, she felt selfish, because she knew she wanted to give Daryl his time and that she deserved to have to wait, but Gracie gave her some comfort. The girl hugged her back and fell asleep in her arms as she cried about what had happened.
Daryl finally needed to make sure Angel was alright, whether she wanted him there or not and he went looking for her. He was told she had picked up Gracie and went to Aarons to find her. When he opened the door, he saw her asleep on the couch with the little girl held tightly in her arms, asleep as well. The image was bittersweet. They'd been trying to have their own family, to have their own life together, but in doing that, they had helped destroy their bigger family. He couldn't stop himself from going over to them though, sitting beside Angel and putting his arm around her. She instinctively moved her head to his shoulder and cuddled close to it. He was so damn happy he at least still had her.
She felt the little girl shift in her arms and woke up to her head against Daryl. He woke up feeling her start to stir and stand, carrying Gracie to her bed. The child was still almost asleep as Angel laid her down and when she walked out of the room rubbing her eyes, a sleepy-eyed Daryl was waiting for her in the hallway. Their eyes met and she felt her voice shake, "I'm sorry."
"Me too." He replied.
"Daryl you didn't-"
"Yeah I did." He nodded, "We wouldn'a been out there…We should'a just stuck it out, finished the bridge."
"Yeah." She agreed with him and limped slightly over to him, his arms going around her, "I should have kept playing nice…Maybe if I hadn't of pushed you two apart…"
"Nah." He muttered against her hair, "It ain't on you."
"It's not on you either." She told him. Letting out a shattered breath she could feel tears pricking her eyes again, "He saved us both so many times…"
"I know." His voice cracked.
"What do we do?" She asked him, "We had a plan, but we…we can't just leave, not now."
"We'll find him. Then decide." He ran his hand down her back.
"Yeah, finding him is the top priority." She agreed.
Michonne was a shell in the days that followed. Angel was two days away from Saddiq clearing her to go out to search for Rick's body with Daryl and during the time she was in Alexandria she had been with Gracie and Aaron the whole time. Overhearing some people talking about Negan she walked over, "What's the problem?"
"Oh, Angel…" One of them said, "It's just…Negan isn't eating and we don't want to bother Michonne."
"Give it to me." Angel reached for the tray.
"Are…Are you sure?" The woman hesitantly handed it to her.
"Yeah." She answered back as she walked down the stairs now. When she walked into the holding area Negan was sitting on the ground.
"Hey there kick ass."
"Shut up." She said, "Eat your damn food."
"Thought you wanted me dead." He told her.
"I did." She answered him.
He chuckled, "You don't anymore?"
"Maggie told me what happened, that you begged for it." She set the tray of food down. "Rick put you in here to make you an example. Now that he's dead, I want you to know this is a goddamn punishment. It's not rehab, it's not a place where you have choices. You will do what I tell you and I'm telling you to eat your fucking food."
"What if I don't?" He asked.
"I will put it in a blender, plug your nose, and force it down your throat." She told him, "You will live every day for the rest of your pathetic life inside these four walls. You will watch outside as society moves the fuck past you and you will remember the things you did to make it to where you cannot be a part of that. You'll think every day of bashing in my best friends head in front of his pregnant wife, and you will think every day about swinging the blood of a man on the woman who loved him's face and every other fucking person your tortured and killed. Remembering the shit piece of human garbage you are for the rest of your life is not why Rick put you in this cage, but it's why you're gunna fucking stay here." Negan swallowed hard as she said this. His eyes trained on her as she spoke with a calm and certain tone. She pointed to the tray, "Now, are you gunna fucking eat your food, or will I be back with a smoothie?"
He walked over to the bars of the cell, towering over her through them and stared down at her, "I'm sorry…'bout Rick."
Her fist passed through the bars connecting with his nose and he fell back, covering it with her hands and she just said, "Apology not accepted. Now fucking eat."
She watched as he moved back to the bars and took the tray into his cell, taking a bite despite the blood pouring out of his nose. Without a word she turned around and left the cell.
Michonne had found Ricks gun, but they still hadn't found his body. Daryl and Angel had decided to follow the river all the way down to the ocean. They knew they were close to the estuary as they sat at their camp. They'd managed to get two squirrels for dinner and were cooking them on the fire. She sighed, "Michonnes pregnant."
"What?" He looked up at her.
Angel nodded, "Yeah, she told me before we left last time. About 3 months along at this point."
"Damn... Why'd you wait to tell me?" He asked. Her eyes avoided his, he knew why. It's been months and even though they'd stopped purposely trying, they still never got pregnant. "Here I thought I was supposed to be the impatient one."
She knew he was trying to get her to smile so she did, "You still are. But…it should have happened by now…"
"It will." He told her.
Leaning over she spun the squirrels, "I was thinking…when we reach the beach, maybe I should grab some shells."
"Yeah?" He looked over at her and she nodded, "What for?"
"Make a mobile…for the baby." She shrugged, "I think it'd match the room."
"I think Michonne would like that." Daryl agreed, He had been wondering this for a while, "You wanna stay when we go back?"
"No." She didn't even hesitate, "I don't mind visiting, but I can't be there, not like how we were before. Too much has changed." She looked at him pulling their food from the fire, "Plus, we were always better out here."
"Yeah, we were." He took the squirrels from her, before giving her a kiss on the head.
"Do you wanna go back?"
"Nah, at least not until we find him." He told her and she nodded her head in agreement.
Angel was washing their clothes when she heard him get back to their camp. Turning she gave him a nod of acknowledgement that he was back. Sitting down to take a break he said, "Saw Michonne. She's…she's bigger."
"I'm sure she'd love to hear it described that way." Angel didn't stop her chuckle.
Daryl watched her as she cleaned and couldn't help but wonder what she would look like that pregnant, but he knew better than to linger on it for too long. "She said Judith asks about us. Gracie too."
"Yeah…" Angel tried not to sound dismissive, but it was hard for her to be around the little children lately, they'd had a plan and so much messed it up. Not that it mattered anyways, she knew that the birth control was well out of her system, something else was the problem as to why they were never successful. Hanging the last bit of clothes up she said, "I was thinking of going to visit Sophia though, see if her and Henry are getting along any better."
"Carol still tryna keep the peace?" Daryl opened up a can of fruit.
"As far as I know. But he won't stay out of her room." She sat down next to him, "If we aren't careful, she's going to wind up living out here with us."
"Plenty of space." He shrugged. "Might want to find a place with a roof over it though."
"Yeah, I don't think that'll matter to her with how annoyed she was last time I saw her." She plucked a pear from the can, "She might ask for more food choices though."
"Well then she'll be shit outta luck unless she finds it herself." He joked with her.
"I'll be sure to tell her that." Angel smiled. "Any other news?"
"Nah. She just said we should stop by. That we don't need to find him to do that." He said while chewing.
She sighed, "Why haven't we found him yet?"
"Maybe he wandered far." Daryl suggested.
"Or made it to the ocean before us…" She said too, but her tone grew defeated "But we need to find him…"
"We will." He assured her, an arm around her waist. He offered her the can, "You gunna see Maggie too?"
"Yeah I think so. I'll do the whole round, like I did before I guess." She looked at him, "You wanna come?"
"Nah." He shook his head, "I'll stay out here. We're almost outta food."
"Okay." She said, "I'll see if Hilltop would be willing to lend us something until we get some meat to trade them."
"Sounds good." He nodded. Daryl didn't want to go anywhere because he didn't want people to see not just how he was doing, but how he and Angel were doing together. He knew that people would know that she was still dealing with it. Making sure she was okay after what happened was the most important thing to him, and he knew finding the body would help her cope with it. He knew that while no one else blamed her, she blamed herself. In the beginning he attempted to hide it from her, how he was feeling but he knew she could tell, he knew it made her guiltier so instead he let her see his grief despite her own. But now they both seemed stagnant since they couldn't find him. They needed something to be able to move on, but they didn't know what that was, so he wouldn't let anyone else see them together, not yet, not until they were somewhat back to normal. He wouldn't let her feel the pressure of that too.
A/N: So this wasn't the best chapter, I'm 100% aware haha, but I was waiting to see where season 10 took us and I was also having a hard time getting to the next point. So while this chapter isn't the best, it did get me to where I needed to go. I'm going to try and post regularly, but I make no promises, I've been having a weird time lately being stuck in quarantine, however I will try my best as I got a random want to finish this chapter so here's to hoping my mental heath allows me to keep it up haha.
