Day 11: A Very Unusual (or perhaps Lucky) Day
Midorima wondered how he got into this point.
Wednesday started as usual as it did to him. Waking up early to get dressed before going downstairs to the kitchen after his mother called him for breakfast and watching Oha-Asa while eating his food with a reminder to his little sister and father about their horoscope and lucky items and leaving the house afterwards with his sister until they went to their separate ways with her to the elementary school and him to the direction of Teikou.
The only deviation from his routine was the apparent canceled basketball morning practice in the gym so he headed straight for the school building, going to his designated shoe locker to replace it with indoor ones, and pointedly dismissed the sudden loud screeching of girls when they noticed a certain blond model. He has selective hearing when it came to annoying pests (also known as Kise and/or Aomine) so he paid no heed to his name being called amidst the squeals and shrieks and made his way towards his classroom, deciding to past the time reading while waiting for class to start.
Classes went by without any difficulty except when his teachers repeatedly demanded Aomine's presence but it was a norm in their class although it had been vexing frequently answering them that he doesn't know where Aomine is and we are only teammates not friends. This went on even after their short break until Aomine showed up just in time for lunch break and as usual Midorima ignored his presence and veered towards the cafeteria with his lunch box in tow.
In his peripheral vision, Midorima noticed various colored hairs and walked to that table, nodding at their assorted greetings as took a seat beside Akashi with Aomine—that he didn't even noticed had followed him—slumping across from him and only because of the squeak of the chair pulling back on his other side did he became aware of Kuroko's presence and thankfully didn't jump in surprise despite being startled.
Another chaotic lunch break ensue which Midorima studiously ignored but for some reason or another found himself getting roped into his teammates' ridiculousness with the exception of Akashi and Kuroko. When lunch time was almost at end and after Akashi postponed their customary rounds of playing shogi in the afternoon due to his captain's student council's duties, Midorima started his trek back to his classroom which only halted when someone tugged the sleeve of his uniform and turned around only to find Kuroko gazing up at him with a familiar impassive expression.
"What is it Kuroko?" he asked while pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose, a bit curious as to why Kuroko would seek him out when they were not really close and only interacted as a result of being in the same club.
"I need your help Midorima-kun," Kuroko began and though Midorima's initial reaction was to refuse, he decided to be benevolent and hear what he has to say. "Midorima-kun is good at chemistry, right? Mid-terms are coming and it's my weakest subject right now. Is Midorima-kun willing to teach me chemistry?"
"I'm surprised you didn't ask Akashi instead. You said so before that he's a good teacher."
"Akashi-kun is busy as it is with obligations to the student council and basketball club on top of his own schoolwork. I don't want to inconvenience him for more. And Midorima-kun is the only capable person I know that can help me."
Mentally verifying if he had other responsibilities he had to prioritize more and confirming none, Midorima decided he could grant him this favor. He and Kuroko may not be compatible due to their personality, horoscope and blood type but he'd rather spend time with him than any of the buffoons in his team (barring Akashi, of course).
"Alright, I will help you Kuroko," he ceded. "Let's meet up in the library after class."
And though it was but a fleeting of a second, Midorima saw how Kuroko's usual blank sky blue eyes transformed and lit up in happiness and relief and his soft pink lips slightly quirked in a small smile. He got distracted that he was only dimly aware of Kuroko thanking him and saying see you later Midorima-kun soon after.
Midorima blinked and tried to wave off the surprising and intruding thoughts circling in his head.
He did not just think Kuroko was beautiful in that moment.
He didn't.
xXx
Soon class ended and as Midorima promised he went to the library. Knowing Kuroko, he headed to the least visited corner and his assumption was right as he saw him reading a novel while his notebook and pencil case were placed on the small table while his bag situated near his feet.
As Kuroko already sensed his presence, Midorima wordlessly pulled the chair across from him and deposited his bag to the side after pulling out his notes on chemistry while Kuroko set aside his book in favor of attentively listening to him.
Teaching Kuroko was easier than he expected. He carefully listened and occasionally asked questions when he wanted clarifications. No wonder Akashi liked instructing Kuroko since he soaked anything Midorima said like a sponge, applying what he learned and not afraid to admit when he didn't understand some parts.
At the progress they were going, they only need to review a few lessons tomorrow and Kuroko would be ready for the test. Midorima would make sure that not only Kuroko will pass but will ace the test or at least get a higher grade than the average ones he always got.
And then, he got into this point where everything took an unusual route.
"Ah."
Midorima looked at hearing Kuroko and saw him closing one eye. "What is it?"
"Some dusts went into my eye," Kuroko answered as he let go of his pencil and tried to touch his eye to possibly rub it.
Catching his hand in time, Midorima stood up and deliberately disregard Kuroko's confusion and surprise as he went around the table and held the back of his head with his other hand and tilted Kuroko's face up. He leaned forward until their faces were only inches apart as he let go of Kuroko's hand and reached out to brush off the stray tear with this thumb on the corner of Kuroko's eye before blowing a puff of warm air to his eye, doing it again once or twice. Intent on his purpose, he didn't even perceive how Kuroko let him do what he wanted and only silently observed him.
Finally noticing the too quiet than normal Kuroko, Midorima shifted his attention from his eye to his whole face and found Kuroko watching him with such seriousness and at once Midorima discerned their close proximity with his hand cupping Kuroko's face and his other hand slowly and instinctively slipping towards his other cheek until he caught captive of his face.
As his eyes leave from those sky blue irises that were clouding in an imperceptible emotion and slowly dragging them towards those luscious pink lips that his mind couldn't seem to erase ever since that time at lunch, Midorima inched closer till their lips were only a hairs breadth away. Kuroko's hooded eyes trailed down to his lips as well as his soft lips parted, feeling his warm breath and that was all the indication Midorima needed as he swooped down to—
"Midorimacchi!"
Midorima and Kuroko froze and the beguiling spell enveloping them completely shattered as they turned and found Kise standing and staring at them dumbfounded with his jaw dropped open and Aomine gaping at them like a fish.
"What are you doing Midorimacchi?" Kise spluttered in disbelief as he quickly strode over them and swiftly wrapped his arms around Kuroko tugging him to his chest while glaring at him as Midorima pulled his hands away from Kuroko.
"Dude, out of everyone I never expect this from you, Midorima," said Aomine, shaking his head in disappointment with a tinge of shock in his voice and an underlying anger and warning that only Midorima could picked up.
Kuroko chose this time to finally speak up. "Kise-kun and Aomine-kun are misunderstanding the situation," he explained. "A stray dust came to my eye and Midorima-kun was only helping me to get rid of it."
"Oh, so that's the thing now, helping get rid a dust in the eye?" Aomine drawled out, obviously not believing what his partner said, cocking one eyebrow at him which Midorima gladly returned with a glare.
Gripping Kuroko tighter, Kise whined. "But your faces were too close Kurokocchi. Midorimacchi was trying to steal a kiss from you and you didn't even notice!"
"I can take care of myself Kise-kun," Kuroko deadpanned although it seemed he was close to venting his annoyance on Kise by elbowing him on the gut. "And please lower your voices we are in a library."
Knowing it to be futile in further enlightening them, Midorima chose to discount their rather overdramatic reaction and organized his notes, putting them back into his bag. "Kuroko since we're done with reviewing the lessons I'll take my leave," he said as he slung his bag over his shoulder. And noting Kise and Aomine's suspicious look, he then added. "And no, I'm not running away no matter what you idiots think. We were almost done before you two barged in."
Stepping in before the two hotheads could butt in, Kuroko stepped away from Kise's hold and stood up to bow his head to Midorima. "Thank you for the help Midorima-kun. The lessons were easier to understand with your notes and explanation. Can we do this again tomorrow?"
His mouth opened to say yes but the two imbeciles, who he nearly forgot that were also in there, cut in by saying they would be there, too before Midorima could even force out a word. It was plainly obvious as to why Kise and Aomine wanted to be there, as if those two would ever volunteer to study in their spare time. Akashi, Momoi and the coach practically have to threaten them to at least have a passing grade in exams so they could play in matches.
"I'll see you tomorrow Kuroko," he said, purposely ignoring the two intruders as he turned around and left the library and only gave a glance to the angry looking librarian marching towards where he came from, no doubt to scold the noisy Kise and Aomine.
"Wait, Midorima-kun!"
Midorima only paused when he heard footsteps behind and looked back to find Kuroko running up to him. He was about to ask what was wrong but his eyes widened in surprise and then blinked in stupefaction as Kuroko stood on his tiptoes and planted a quick and gentle kiss on his cheek.
"Thank you again Midorima-kun. I'll see you tomorrow."
Shocked, Midorima could only watched as Kuroko went back to the library to probably save his teammates from the librarian as his hand moved to his left cheek, still feeling the warmth of Kuroko's soft lips as he ingrained that one beautiful smile for him onto his mind.
He swore his face and ears weren't red.
It wasn't.
