The rain pounded against Arthur's umbrella, the loud pitter-patter was annoying him. It's not that he wasn't used to the rain, but it was coming down especially hard and he didn't want to be wandering around in it. He spotted an open cafe and decided to take shelter there.
The door opened with a jingle. Arthur closed his umbrella and scanned the interior. It was a cute little cafe, with beige walls, black and white checkered tile flooring, a snack bar across from the door with a white base and black counter top, light pink bar chairs lining the bar, five booths along the front windows with white table tops and the same pink color for the seats, and some single tables in the back, a chair on each side. Several photos hung on the walls, covers of music albums, and pictures of musicians such as Elvis Presley, Patti Page, Frank Sinatra, and others. Various records, car posters, and Coca Cola ads completed the wall decorations. A jukebox sat by the kitchen divider, playing Percy Faith's "Where Is Your Heart".
The lyrics echoed through the small building, creating a soft, light hearted kind of mood. Few people were in the cafe, a young couple sharing a strawberry milkshake at one of the tables, a group of three friends chatting around the jukebox, and what appeared to be two businessmen on break at the snack bar.
Arthur shook off some of the water from his green umbrella and went to go take a seat at one of the booths. He sank into the leather with a low sigh, letting his umbrella lean against the seat from under the table. He looked out the window into the street; cars drove by, their headlights illuminating the dark road, few people with umbrellas hurried past. It was only three in the afternoon, but the gloomy weather made it seem so much later. Arthur wondered if he stared out long enough the rain would eventually stop.
"Excuse me sir, would you like anything?" Arthur heard the waiter's voice, but didn't bother to turn his head.
"No, I don't want anything." he stated flatly, resting the palm of his hand against his chin.
"I'm sorry, but if you don't order anything I'm gonna have to ask you to leave." there was a bit of nervousness in the stranger's voice. "And I don't wanna send you out into this rain storm."
Arthur finally turned to look at the person speaking to him. What he saw took him by surprise; a tall waiter with broad shoulders and big arms, his uniform fit him well, the pink vest hugging his chest and white pants making his legs look long. His face still had a lot of youth, so Arthur suspected that he was young, though the blue eyes behind his glasses made Arthur speechless. They were the most beautiful blue he had ever seen. Surely, a very attractive waiter as not what he was expecting.
He realized he was staring a little too long and he looked down at the table. "Ah-Just some tea then, I guess." he could feel his cheeks heat up.
The man nodded and left quickly. A few minutes later he came back with a fresh cup of tea, milk, honey, and sugar and set them down on the table in front of Arthur.
Arthur thanked him and put some sugar in his drink. As he took a sip he noticed the waiter from across the room check his watch, then disappear behind the door to the kitchen. Arthur decided to ignore the pounding in his chest.
