A/N: Rugrats was my childhood, and I'm kind of sad that their story never got the closure that it needed. So I'm making one for it. Every chapter's going to be in a different person's POV. I'm not gonna go into full detail about everything because there will be future chapters for flashbacks in full narration. Anyway, enjoy!
Disclaimer: Rugrats and All Grown Up in no way belong to me.
KIMI
The fifth time Chuckie banged on the bathroom door, Kimi knew his threats of "I'm gonna break this door down" were getting serious. Oops. It's Chuck now. He'd stopped being Chuckie since they entered high school. Anyway, it's not like they were gonna be late for school. She woke up two hours before everyone else to get ready. He still had plenty of time to shower, get dressed and then have breakfast before they have to get in the car. She deserved to look nice. It was the first day of junior year, for goodness' sake.
Junior year. Wow, it seemed like just yesterday when she first stepped into high school and started hanging out with a new group of friends. Yup, a new group of friends. A group of friends that three years ago, Kimi would've hated. It was kind of inevitable. Summer after middle school, she went off to an athletics camp. She made friends with the cheerleaders there and when they got to high school, they stuck together. They weren't not so bad once you got to know them. At least, that's what Kimi said to herself whenever she wondered why she chose their company over that of her childhood friends. Sure, some were really stuck-up and materialistic, but they could be nice too. Joanna, especially. Kimi got along with her best. Marcia was the pack leader. She's nice to them, her friends, but she's a bitch to everyone else. Kimi would rather not talk about it. She didn't even want to think about it.
Hey, she was still friends with everyone she grew up with, Lil was still her best friend but she's into soccer now – one of four girls who were put on the boys' soccer team (there weren't enough girls to establish their own league) – and with different classes and then training for both of them, they only got to talk to each other during lunch and after school on the phone. Lilly was still the first person Kimi would go to for anything. Chuck was inevitable too, he's her brother. Tommy and Phil though? Kimi liked to think that they were still friends, but there's history there. After middle school though, it just wasn't the same. They acknowledged her presence when they came by her house, but they always hung out in Chuck's room.
At the start of 8th grade, Phil and Kimi started dating. It wasn't something out of the blue either. But after all those years of fighting and blaming each other for everything, Kimi actually liked Phil, and vice-versa. Lil said she saw it coming. Apparently, there had to be a reason why they couldn't stand each other for the past twelve years of their lives. In other words, she was thrilled that her best friend and her brother were together. It was good for a couple of months; riding their bikes to school, pairing up for projects, hanging-out after school; regular boyfriend-girlfriend things. Phil turned out to be a pretty decent boyfriend. He opened doors for her, carried her books. She never expected the annoying kid from her childhood would actually be a gentleman.
December came and Kimi was excited to have her first Christmas with a boyfriend. She got Phil a really good present too. It was a limited edition cover of his favorite comic book that she ordered online and spent two months of her Java Lava paychecks on. That and a new watch. Phil broke his old one after he fell off the tree outside her window in an attempt to escape getting caught by her dad while they were making out. He had to wear a cast for the next four weeks, but he said the adrenaline rush was worth it. She planned on giving Phil his presents when they went over to Tommy's for their Christmas tradition of Christmas movies and junk food. Sadly, the DeVilles went out of town to visit Betty's family in Kansas. If you can call, her mother's second cousins' godson's parents, family. So Kimi gave her present in advance instead and despite costing her a lot of money, the look on Phil's face made everything worth it. Phil said he'll give Kimi her present when he got back before New Year's, which she didn't mind.
Christmas Night tradition was the kids going over to the Pickles household to watch a bunch of Christmas movies until the break of dawn. Tommy was the only one to ever stay up through all the movies. It probably has something to do with his love for film and shiz. Everybody else always fell asleep somewhere before The Nightmare Before Christmas – the last movie in the selection.
That year though, Kimi managed to stayed up with Tommy. Halfway through Nightmare, they got bored and decided to go out to the tree fort, despite the freezing weather. They talked, about anything and everything. It was nice. Naturally, their topic of conversation went to relationships. They talked about Olivia and Chuck's heart attack when he saw their initials together. They had a really good laugh about that. They talked about Phil. Somewhere in there, Tommy opened up about his feelings for Kimi. They ended up kissing, lying down on the cold wooden floor with Tommy on top of her and that's when her phone rang. It was Phil. Kimi answered her phone, and went back inside the house flustered and confused.
That morning, Kimi realized that her little childhood crush on Tommy never went away. Not even with Phil in the picture, which really made her feel like crap and it was made worse when Phil came home early. With her Christmas present. He got her two as well - a yellow labrador puppy with a huge red bow around his neck and a simple card. Opening it, she read only three words, I love you. And without meaning to, she said it back.
The few months were a blur of happiness, confessions, tears, fights, fall-outs, more tears and more fights. Suffice to say that the only relationship to survive was Phil and Tommy's, and not without scars. It took a few more months for her friendship with Lil to go back to the way it used to, and Kimi couldn't blame her. She was the one at fault after all. Kimi hoped that she would get into Tommy and Phil's good graces again, but three years later, nothing's really changed.
Loud banging on the door woke Kimi up from her flashback. "Kimi, I swear, if you don't get out of the bathroom this instant, so help me, I will-"
She opened the door, came out all dressed and made-up for school. "All yours." Chuck was still in his pajamas. His now-shortened, no longer spiky red hair was a mess and he glared at her with so much mirth, Kimi could've sworn she'd have burned to ashes if he had his glasses on.
"Finally! What do you in here that it takes you forever to finish?"
"I'm a girl." Kimi defended.
"Yeah, I'm glad we established that. Now get out." Chuck shoved Kimi out of the way and slammed the door in her face.
Sighing loudly, she made her to way to her bedroom to get her stuff. She had at least 30 minutes before her brother starts honking the car horn at her to hurry. Honestly, he's been really short with everyone lately. Ever since they got back from their summer in Europe. Maybe because he misses that mystery girl that Kimi's pretty sure he still e-mails often. Whatever. At least Chuck finally found someone who can put up with his nerdiness. She shoved all of her books in her backpack, grabbed her cheerleader uniform and stuffed it in along with her books then made her way to the kitchen for breakfast.
A/N: Next chapter, Tommy's POV. Reviews are much appreciated. Ta-ta for now.
