Deleted Scene:
I'm Sorry
"That doesn't look right."
"Maybe we read the instructions, wrong?"
"Of course not! I read them."
"Well, that makes sense."
Patrick stuck his tongue out at Katie and she quickly swung the chocolate batter covered spoon into his face, hitting his nose, smudging it with chocolate from the tip of his tongue down, across his tongue, and down to his chin.
Katie laughed as she watched Patrick's eyes pop open in surprise before he slid his tongue back into his mouth and licked his lips. He then quickly leaned over and gave her a, literally, sweet kiss. Katie smiled against his lips as she kissed him back before pulling away, wiping at the chocolate that smeared across the tip of her nose.
She had stayed after Carlos, James, Kendall, and Logan went back to the Palm Woods. She wanted to spend some more time with him before he had to go back to the hospital. From what he explained, they were only letting him out for the magazine article and photo shoot.
"Maybe we should've asked Lizzie for help," she commented as she turned her gaze down towards the cooling pan, of what was supposed to be brownies. It ended up looking more thick then they needed to a quick cut established the fact that it came out more like a chocolate cake than a brownie. "She's, like, a wizard with this baking stuff. Or we could've asked Riles."
"No way," Patrick replied with a shake of his head, reaching out his hand to wipe the remnants of chocolate off her face. "I want to do this for Riles, not have her make her own brownies."
She wrinkled her nose, feeling her face flush as she turned her head away. She reached for the dish rag that sat on the counter and used it to wipe her face, the coarse fibers scratching her cheeks and mouth as she did so. He licked the chocolate off his finger, his eyebrows knitting together.
"Wellll," Katie said as she looked around the messy kitchen. "It's the thought that counts and I'm thinking that we should've asked for help."
Chocolate batter dripped off the side of the mixing bowl, egg yolk dripped out of abandoned cracked egg shells, vegetable oil dripped out of the bottle that lay sideways on the island. Chocolate chips were scattered out of the over turned bag, and dirty measuring cups were laying on the floor.
"Ehh, I'll clean it later," Patrick said as he waved his hand in the air. "It's my chore for the week anyway."
Katie blinked in surprise, looking over at him. "How can you still have chores if you're—" she suddenly stopped, putting a hand over her mouth before dropping it back down to the chain around her neck. He was going back to the hospital the next morning. She didn't want to dwell on it. He was here now and that was all that mattered.
"They don't stop doing chores while I'm gone," Patrick said with a short laugh. "I mean, our house is a little cluttered, a bit of an organized mess, but it'd get really bad if we didn't do anything." He peered over at her. "You can keep those. I don't want 'em back."
"But, they were your dad's," Katie protested. He shrugged.
"They're yours now," he replied as he reached his hands out towards the pan. He lightly tapped it with his fingers before reaching for the knife that sat on the plate beside it. He eased out a couple of the cut brownies, transferring them over to the plate. "Could you get the candles out of that cabinet, please? You won't miss it, they're in a white basket."
"Sure," Katie replied with a nod of her head. She turned towards the cabinets he indicated and pulled the doors open. She spotted the white basket immediately and reached for it, her fingers brushing the side of the basket. She stood u on her tiptoes, reaching for it again. Again, her fingers brushed the basket, this time, pushing it farther back. "Oh, come on."
Patrick's low chuckle reached her ears. She could feel him standing behind her close. Really close. An arm slipped around her waist, and she flinched as his fingers brushed her stomach, an ache forming. He pulled her back into his chest as he used his other hand to reach for the basket. She watched as he looped his fingers into the holes in the side before pulling it off the shelf, setting it down on the counter.
"You know, I'm really sorry about what happened," Patrick whispered into her ear. Katie slowly nodded her head, swallowing thickly. "I did something I always promised myself I'd never do."
"Pat, you always tried—"
"Please, let me finish," Patrick said, lowering his voice. Katie turned in his arms, resting her back against the side of the counter, angling her head back slightly to look up at him. "I know what you're going to say; I at least tried to stop myself. The thing is, I still couldn't fight myself and win."
He pressed his forehead against hers, closing his eyes for a moment. "That's what I'm trying to learn at the hospital," explain as he took a step away from her, crossing his arms over his chest before lifting his hand to play with the hoop earring in his ear. "I'm trying to learn not to let this defeat me. The thing is, that I'm lucky to have you forgive me for what I did and to give me a second chance because not a lot of people would do that and I promise you I'll make sure it won't happen again."
"I believe you," Katie said quietly. "Because, I know you won't ever forget what you did. I don't want you to beat yourself up for it, but if that's a way for you to be sure that you keep your promise to yourself…then who am I to judge?" Patrick gave a half smile; his lips briefly twitching upwards. "Apology accepted."
"Good," Patrick said, letting out a sigh of relief before giving her his famous lopsided smile. "So, what's this I hear about my being your boyfriend?" He hiked an eyebrow as she blushed. "Not that I'm complaining, I just don't ever remember re-establishing that."
"Fine, be that way," Katie said with a shrug. "I asked Jett Stetson to wait for me." Katie reached up to grasp a lock of her hair, twirling it around her finger. "I wonder if he's seeing anybody right now."
"Ha ha ha," Patrick said sarcastically as he reached past her, digging through the basket. He grabbed three small red candles and a lighter in his hand.
"Who says I'm kidding?" Katie asked as she pushed off the counter to watch him push the candles into the brownies on the plate.
"Oh, I know you are," Patrick replied simply as he held the lighter out beside him. He flicked his thumb a couple of times before it caught and a flame appeared. "Because I'm better looking than Jett." He carefully lit the candles before he closed the lighter.
"Says who?" Katie asked with a roll of her eyes. But, she couldn't help but smile as he turned around to face her.
"Says all those girls who vote in those magazine polls," Patrick replied before pointing a finger in her direction. "And you, once upon a time. Whether or not you believe it now, or choose to believe it, is your prerogative, but I remember you saying it, and that's all I need."
"Ooh, prerogative, big word there," Katie teased. "Seems to me like those therapy sessions are helping you in more ways than one."
"Don't get used to it," Patrick said with a small laugh as he set the lighter down onto the table. "Alright, let's go. We're all going surfing tomorrow before I have to go back, and Riles went to bed early to rest up for it. Or at least that's what she says; you know how she and Kendall have those Skype dates or whatever in the middle of the night." He let out a happy sigh. "Man, I missed being able to rag on them."
"Hope that's not the only thing you missed," Katie commented as he carefully removed the plate of brownies from the table.
"Course not," Patrick replied, giving her an odd look before relaxing into a teasing smile. "I missed my dogs, too."
"Well, then," Katie said with a roll of her eyes.
Her laughter mixed in with his as he led the way out of the kitchen, through the foyer and up the winding stairs to the second floor. Their footsteps were masked by the carpeted hallway, and the sound of explosions and occasional curses coming from a room down by the end of the hall.
"Open the door," Patrick said, lifting his foot, pointing his toes towards Riley's bedroom door before he set it back on the floor, show casing his control of his balance. Katie glanced at the door and then back over at him. "Just open it. It's fine. I do this all the time."
Katie hiked an eyebrow before doing what she was asked; grasping the metallic door handle, twisting it, and pushing the door open. As Patrick stepped into the room, the warm glow of the candles the only source in the room apart from the night light that sat in the corner of the room. Katie followed Patrick over to Riley's bed and she watched as Patrick jumped on top of her, keeping the plate holding the brownies perfectly parallel.
"Get up," he said to her as Riley groaned, turning in her bed and blindly slapping at his thigh.
"Whhaaatt?" Riley asked, squinting at him before reaching for her lamp. It clicked on and she squeezed an eye shut as she reached for her glasses, sliding them on. She lifted her hand in Katie's direction. "Hey, Kid. Is there a reason why he's sitting on top of me?"
"Go on," Katie goaded her boyfriend.
"Here," Patrick said, shoving the plate into her hands. Riley looked down at the brownies and then up at him. "I know it's not your birthday." He then turned towards Katie. "You forget once and you never live it down."
"How could you forget her birthday?" she asked, scratching the back of her neck in confusion. "It's the same day as Rhubes."
"We're still trying to figure that one out," Riley said before she blew out the candles. "Seriously, what's this for?"
"I wanted to apologize," Patrick said to her and this time, Riley looked confused. "I didn't know I was putting that much pressure on you over the years." He started messing with his toes as he pulled his knee up to his chest. "I mean, I guess I did know, but I could've done more to help. Stop being stupid or…whatever."
"We all just put the leader thing on you and…well, I know you always felt like what happened with mom and dad was your fault. But, you don't have to take responsibility for it. For any of it. I tell you that over and over and I know you like being in control, but let me be in control of this. It wasn't your fault, it was mine."
"If I had told someone sooner it wouldn't have gotten this far," Riley replied, shaking her head back and forth. "You wouldn't be where you are, stuck in that hospital."
"If we had told someone sooner," Patrick corrected her. "And I'd have to face my fear eventually." He looked over at Katie and gave her a warm smile. "I've already done that twice. Although, the hospital/needles thing I'm going to have to work a little bit more on. Soon, you won't have to strap me down for a shot or a tattoo." Riley laughed quietly.
Katie couldn't help but let out a small laugh. It was hard for her to imagine someone who had a decent amount of tattoos was afraid of needles. She understood his fear of doctor's offices and hospitals, but couldn't figure out his fear of needles. She had also never asked him as well. It was hard to figure out what was ok and not ok to question him about in his life.
As she had gotten to know him over the years, she could recognize when he would give serious answers, answer questions as if it was no big deal, or choose to ignore the questions just by his body language. Some things she was simply worried about what the answer would be and couldn't gather up enough courage to ask.
"Yeah, but I told you guys not to say anything," Riley said as he laughter faded. "This would've all been over ages ago."
"Yeah, but the we probably wouldn't have met Ronan, or have been hired to help Gustavo, or met Katie and them," Patrick pointed out. "Not denying that we'd be most likely be happy, Ri-Bread, but it wouldn't be the same." Riley opened her mouth to protest and Patrick pulled a candle out of one of the brownies before he picked it up and shoved it into her mouth. "Ok, shut up and eat the brownie."
Riley made a face before grabbing the end of the brownie that stuck out of her mouth, breaking it off and setting it down onto the plate.
"For once in your life, just listen to what I have to say, aight?" Patrick asked. He leaned closer to her, getting in her face. "This. Was. Not. Your. Fault."
"Neither are these," Riley said, making a face as she slowly chewed. She lifted her hand and pushed his face away. "These suck."
"They were supposed to be brownies," Katie explained to her and Riley's eyebrows shot up. "I told him we should've asked for…" She trailed off, moving her thumb to her mouth. "Nevermind." She could see why he didn't ask. They weren't used to asking for help, it was something they had to learn to do. It was something she needed to learn when she was somewhat in the same predicament.
"No, you really should have," Riley said with a short laugh. "Katie, I want to apologize to you, too."
"Why?" Katie asked, taken aback.
"Because while I'm not someone who really wants to have people who consider me a role model, I can't help how people think of me," Riley explained, sitting up against the headboard of her bed. "I know you look up to me, and I apologize for not always being the best person for you to look up to. It's a weird thing for me to handle and I don't know when or if I fully will be able to accept it. Thing is, I should've seen what was happening and stepped in."
"No, Riles, don't think like that," Katie said with a shake of her head.
"Katie, Patrick is right, we are all like him," Riley said to her. "I just never wanted to admit it to myself, but he's right. That's why I hate the idea of being a role model and that's why I had told you a couple of years ago that out of everybody in the world for you to want to be like, or just to look up to, it wasn't me."
"Oh," Katie said quietly, nodding her head.
"But, you and Kendall, and everybody have helped us learn that there are a lot of things about us that people look up to," Riley continued letting out a sigh. "I'm flattered. Really, I am." She then broke into bit of a laugh. "But, if there's one thing you can definitely learn from me, it's how to bake." She moved the plate onto the bedside table before pushing her sheets back, jostling Patrick so hard that he nearly fell off the bed. "Come on, you both have a lot to learn. And this way, it'd give me peace of mind knowing that you have something decent to eat while you're gone."
"You can't control that either," Patrick commented.
"Just watch me," Riley replied, pushing on his forehead as she passed him.
"I can see where you got your stubbornness from," Patrick said to Katie as he got up from her bed, stretching his arms over his head.
"Oh, please, that's all me," Katie said, shoving his shoulder.
"Good to know." A devilish smile crossed his face. "Let's see if we can get her to make us a whole bunch of stuff if we mess up a lot."
"I heard that," Riley called. Katie laughed quietly as Patrick took her hand, pulling her out of Riley's room, following his older sister down the stairs.
"I said it out loud," Patrick called after her. "I'm a growing boy, I need energy."
"For someone who likes to call themselves a man every chance he gets you sure seem to have no problem slighting yourself," Riley said over her shoulder, throwing him a smirk. Patrick made a loud whining sound. "Here I thought you were finally growing up."
"Hey, you missed me following you around and you know it," Patrick said to her. He was quiet for a moment. "I've missed it, too." Katie squeezed his hand and he smiled back down at her, gently squeezing her hand back. "I've missed a lot of things."
A/N: This scene is set a couple hours after the last chapter. Thanks to ZoeyBoey224 for bringing up the lack of Riley/Patrick reconciliation in the final chapter. Hope you liked this one.
