CHAPTER 15
Teddy stared at Dumbeldore in disbelief. They had done it. The Order had actually managed to sneak a time turner out from under the Ministry's nose. Across him, his shocked facial expression was mirrored on Victoire's face.
The wizarding legend smiled at Teddy from his place at the head of the table as he held up the time turner for everyone in the room to see. It glinted in the light of the kitchen as Teddy stared up at his only transport home.
"We can finally go home!" Albus exclaimed from the other side of the table, his green eyes bright.
"Well, no time like the present." James said standing up and toppling over his chair which landed on Sirius' foot.
The Marauder's eyes were watering with pain as he massaged his crushed foot. Teddy grinned at the pained expression on his father's face as he filed out of the kitchen with the rest of the Order. As he left however, he was certain he heard Sirius swear quietly under his breath. A sudden flash blinded him for half a moment before he remembered where it came from.
"Stop sneaking up on people just to photograph them Victoire." Fred II was whining.
The oldest Weasley cousin merely stuck out her tongue and flounced away to take snapshots of others. Teddy watched on in amusement as Tonks grabbed Remus and practically forced him into taking a picture with her. Teddy smiled as his mother teased his slowly reddening father. He smile faded after a while when he realised that he had to go. He didn't want to go. Not when he had his parents here.
But this is not your time. He told himself fiercely.
Kingsley was winding up the time turner when Teddy felt a hand on his shoulder. He looked around and found a familiar pair of green eyes staring back at him. "C'mon kid. One last picture with your old man?"
Teddy grinned at his father. "One last picture."
Harry watched the grandfather clock closely. It was already a quarter to ten. Where were they? Surely they didn't travel further back in time?
George was pacing round and round in a perfect circle. Angelina watched him without any expression giving way on her face. Ron was busy buttoning and unbuttoning the cuff of his shirt. Hermione meanwhile, was trying to stop him to no avail.
Molly II, Lucy, and Scorpius were staring at what Harry supposed was an invisible X marked into the ground where the others would most likely appear. Ginny had already tried – and failed – to get them to go to bed. Harry returned to his watching of the grandfather clock as the second ticked by.
"Look." came the exclamation from Ron that made Harry look up. His best friend was pointing to a spot in the middle of the room. The air simmered as Harry's breath caught. Slowly, like time had slowed down, Harry watched as the simmering air solidified and the outline became clearer to him.
The arrival of Teddy and his merry band of time travellers were greeted by shouts of relive from everyone.
Remus watched them go with a heavy heart. Teddy, his son, was leaving. For half a moment, Remus felt like running to him and asking, no, begging Teddy to stay. He needed him here, just to reassure Remus that all of this wasn't just a dream.
Beside him, he felt Tonks slip her hand through his and squeezed it. "It'll be alright." Remus said half to himself, half to Tonks. She laughed softly and Remus' heart skipped a beat. He would take Teddy up on his advice and ask Tonks out. Someday.
As he watched the kids vanish, Remus felt something at the back of his mind. It was niggling away and like chalk on a slate, the memories of the past few weeks erased themselves slowly from his mind. Remus knew what it was. Already, it was taking everything. Every precious memory from Teddy's time here was going and no matter how hard Remus tried to hold on, it was all slipping away.
Just like that, it was gone.
Teddy stood up feeling like the wind had been knocked out of him. They were back. He knew that even before he opened his eyes. Really, concerned adults could be so loud sometimes.
Somewhere on his left, he could hear Ginny already beginning her lecture on James.
Once things had calmed down and they were all nursing cups of hot chocolate, they sat around the room recounting their various adventures from their time in the past. Harry and the others listened to all of this seriously. Once they were finished, Ginny sent them straight up to bed with the promise that they would talk more about it tomorrow.
Teddy was about to make his way upstairs after placing the cups in the kitchen sink when he felt a familiar hand on his shoulder. "Hey Harry." he said with a tired smile.
"Are you alright Teddy?" Harry asked, concern etched on his face. "I mean with you being in the same time as Remus and Tonks."
Teddy gave Harry a smile which seemed to proclaim that everything was fine. "I'm more than okay now Harry." he said softly. "I understand why now."
"That's good to know Teddy." came back the relived reply. "Have a good sleep."
"Goodnight, Harry."
I understand now mum, dad. I know why you had to do it and honestly, I couldn't be prouder of the both of you. Teddy thought that night as he stared up at the ceiling. I know you're watching over me and I just want you to know that I'll always do my best at everything I do.
From the next room, Teddy heard the sounds of muffled laughter. "Be quiet, James." he said while knocking on the wall. "You too Fred."
Remus blinked. He looked around confusedly. What was the Order doing in the living room? Why were they standing in a circle? Most importantly; why was he holding Tonks' hand? Not that there was anything wrong with that, it was quite comforting really.
He let go, blushing furiously, but not before Sirius saw it and went off with the other members of the Order laughing his head off. For a few moments, Remus and Tonks stared at each other blankly. Feeling slightly awkward, Remus offered Tonks a smile.
"So, are you free Friday night?" he blurted out before his eyes widen when he realised what he just said. Tonks was looking at him curiously. Her intense staring was making Remus nervous. He was never the best with girls, but this was the most nervous he had ever felt.
Tonks grinned back at him after a few minutes and Remus let out a breath he had no idea he was holding. "Yes. Yes, I am."
