Through the shadows, a white masked man watched the young, mistreated boy. After the death of his teacher, Minato, he took it upon himself to watch over the young, now just four year old, boy, Naruto.

He looked strikingly like his father, even so vibrant aqua eyes took Kakashi into the past, as well as the spiky yellow hair. He wondered how the villagers could hate the little boy. Did they not see the resemblance he had for the Fourth Hokage?

The personality of the blonde was more like is mother. Though only four, he was already impulsive and get angry easily. That was greatly unlike his father, who was calm and thought things through.

"Demon!" A faceless person in the crowd yelled at the boy.

The boy's head hug, facing the dirt road, tears darkening the sand. He was silent.

Pain for young Naruto welled in the silver-haired man's chest

So, without thinking, he stopped out of the shadows. His Anbu uniform earning him eyes he ignored, he walked over to the blue-eyed toddler.

He crouched down in front of him, and Naruto cowered back, seeming to expect a blow. Anger filled Kakashi as well as pain.

"I won't hit you, Naruto." He whispered softly from behind his Anbu mask.

"P-promise?" the child stuttered.

"I promise."

Naruto looked up at Kakashi with watery eyes. "Am I a demon?"

The question surprised the man, but he know the answer. "No. You're not a demon."

A small smile rose on the boys tiny mouth. "Thanks."

"Anytime."

A small hand reached out. Kakashi, unsure of what the boy wanted, took a guess and placed his large hand in the small, surprisingly calloused, hand of Naruto's.

Naruto looked down at the man's hand and inspected a small cut on his hand. "Does it hurt?" is childish voice asked.

To be honest, the man hadn't even noticed the small cut. But to humor the child , he said, "Yes, a little."

The other hand of Naruto's went digging into his pocket, trying to find something.

What is he looking for? Kakashi thought.

Naruto pulled something out of his pocket. It looked like a small piece of paper, but when Naruto started taking off the small wrap of plastic, he knew that it was a band-aid.

"It's my last," Naruto said as he went to place it over the minuscule cut.

"Keep it, then, " Kakashi said "You may need it."

Naruto smiled wide, showing some gaps in his teeth.

"But you're nice to me. And you're hurt, " he went on, "I can always get more. I'll have to wait a while though. I spent the last of my money on ramen."

Kakashi stared that the generous child. While most children were selfish, this boy was not. Even being hated by some villagers, Naruto was still sweet.

"Here," he placed the band-aid perfectly.

"Thank you, I feel better."

The Uzumaki smiled again. "Welcome."

Kakashi reached into his pocket and pulled out money.

"Here, Naruto," he handed him the money.

"Whoa." He stared at it. "But it's yours." He triend to and it back.

Kakashi smiled behind his mask.

"Keep it."

"But-"

"You helped me feel better. You should get something in return."

He looked down at the money. "Really?"

"Yep."

The blonde looked up and smiled. "Thanks!" He tried to wrap his little arms around Kakashi's upper body, not caring that it was too large to hold.

The silver- haired man watched his teacher's son run toward Ichiraku.

Again, he smiled behind is mask. He couldn't wait to see the boy grow.
