Misaki clenched his hands into fists in his lap and stared down at them. "I'm capable of looking after myself. I don't need you to babysit me. Nii-chan doesn't need to know you didn't stay with me."
Akihiko raised a delicate eyebrow at that and folded his arms across his chest. "You want me to lie to my boyfriend?" Misaki shrugged and didn't say anything, he suddenly felt exhausted and just wished something would go his way for once. Akihiko sighed and rose from the bed. "I'm going to check with the doctors that I can take you home. I don't care if you don't like it, Takahiro asked me to stay with you so I will."
A half hour later, Misaki was slumped in the front seat of Akihiko's flashy sports car, trying his best to stop his heart from racing at being so close to him. The ride was spent in silence and when they finally pulled up in front of the house, Misaki scrambled from the car and practically ran to the front door, only to realise he didn't have a key to get in. He took a deep breath and turned to see Akihiko calmly climbing out of the car and giving him a smug look. The teen felt his face flush as he turned back around and glared at the door as if it was somehow the door's fault that he couldn't get in. A sudden warmth spread over Misaki's back and his body tensed as he realised Akihiko was stood right behind him, the heat of his chest so close to Misaki that he could lean back just a little and be pressed up against the toned torso. "How did you plan on getting in without a key?"
Misaki did his best to look annoyed and not at all affected by their proximity, but he couldn't help his face slowly turning a bright red as Akihiko reached around him to put the key in the door, effectively locking the brunette between his arm and the wall. Akihiko began to pull the door open and Misaki stumbled back, right into the man, with an embarrassed squeak. The author laughed and gently nudged Misaki inside, pulling the door shut behind them.
That evening Misaki decided it was best not to let Akihiko anywhere near the kitchen again so resigned himself to cooking until his brother came home. He searched in the fridge and managed to pull together some omelettes and rice, it wasn't much but his brother hadn't gone shopping before leaving.
He'd just set the table when Akihiko padded down the stairs and headed straight for the food, Misaki sat down opposite the man and with a quick "Itadakimasu" he began eating in silence. He couldn't even bring himself to look up at the author, having him round with his brother was one thing, but knowing they were going to be completely alone until Takahiro came back both scared and excited Misaki.
How was he supposed to hide his feelings without his brother serving as a distraction? The teen frowned down at his food and suddenly lost his appetite, he pushed his plate away and stood up with a sigh. "Misaki?"
The brunette finally lifted his eyes to meet Akihiko's and realised he'd never asked how long Takahiro would be away for. He pursed his lips and gathered his things from the table, trying to gather the courage to speak. "How…how long will Nii-chan be away?"
Akihiko paused and he looked for a brief second like he didn't want to answer, but the look was gone so quickly Misaki pushed it from his mind. "A month."
The dishes clattered onto the table as Misaki's hands went limp, the leftover food dirtying the table cloth. "A m-month? Nii-chan's gone for a whole month?" Akihiko nodded and took another bite of the omlette, not verbalizing an answer for the shocked teen. Dirty dishes forgotten, Misaki fled the room and raced up the stairs to hide in his bedroom. He dove under the covers and stared at the underside of his duvet in shock. One month. One whole month stuck in the same house with a man he loved. One whole month of suppressing his feelings and pretending that just the sight of the lavender eyes didn't stir something in his stomach.
He slapped his hands over his mouth as a sob threatened to break free, his small body shook with the effort of holding back his tears. He knew Akihiko wouldn't take his feelings seriously, he'd proved as much in the hospital. To Akihiko, he was just a silly teen with a crush that he would easily get over. Misaki knew it wasn't just a crush. His heart ached every time he saw his brother and Akihiko together, his head swam with wild fantasies of them running away together after Akihiko finally realised his feelings for the teen. Misaki's gut clenched as his thoughts turned darker, he knew nothing could ever happen. It was a hopeless one-sided love that he needed to get over. He needed to stop waking up, his pyjama trousers tented and straining after dreams that made Misaki blush when he thought about them. Akihiko would never see him in the way he wanted to. What was it that made Takahiro good enough but not him? What did Misaki lack that meant Akihiko didn't even look twice at him, didn't see anything more than the little brother. Maybe if Misaki became more like Takahiro, maybe then Akihiko would pay him more attention.
The teen stopped those thoughts before they could go any further. He couldn't, even if he really tried, be as air-headed and naiive as his brother. Takahiro truly was unique in that aspect. Misaki curled further into a ball and let out a long, shaky sigh, his tears now silently rolling down his cheeks.
A gentle knock on the door had him hastily wiping at his face and trying to slow his breathing, turn it into a more relaxed rhythm. Maybe if he pretended to be asleep Akihiko would leave him alone. He was wrong.
The author called Misaki's name through the door and after a brief pause, he entered the room and made his way over to Misaki's bed. "Misaki?" The teen held himself still and tried desperately to keep his breathing even. The mattress dipped where Akihiko sat down on the edge of the bed and Misaki felt the duvet being pulled down from over his head. Akihiko adjusted the cover and tucked it around Misaki, just like the teen had dreamed in the hospital. He felt a cool touch on his head and realised Akihiko was smoothing his hair, then the familiar and painful scent surrounded him. He could feel Akihiko's breath on his cheek, hot and shallow. "Misaki…" The teen felt his heart stutter and then beat wildly in his chest at the sound of his name, but it was nothing compared to what came next. The brunette felt his whole body react as something warm was pressed to his temple. It took him a few seconds to realize the warmth was from Akihiko's lips. His soft, gentle lips placing a lingering kiss on his pale skin. Just as Akihiko pulled away, Misaki couldn't stop his eyes snapping open and looking directly into the shocked lavender ones.
