Last chapter! I hope you've enjoyed reading this story, I've really enjoyed writing it. I'm kind of sad to see it end, but I think I've ended it on a good note. Thank you for those who have reviewed
John bolted into a sitting position as he heard Anna's screams. "JOHN! MAKE HIM STOP!"
"Marmie!" Lily's cry sounded from the children's bedroom. John turned to the doorway.
"Jacob, keep Lily in your room!" He turned back to Anna, he could tell she hadn't woken up yet. "Anna, wake up, you're having a nightmare." John kept his attention on Anna. "Anna, my darling, wake up, listen to me, you're having a nightmare. It's not real."
Slowly the nightmare abated and Anna woke. Anna could feel John's body heat close as she woke. Internally she recoiled. She knew John wouldn't hurt her but for some reason she couldn't stand to be near him right now.
"Anna..." John said, he shifted on the bed, but Anna turned to him.
"No!" It came out as a hiss. "No John. I can't, not tonight. Please, take the couch."
John felt his heart drop. Even at the worst time, after she'd been attacked, she hadn't asked that he take the couch. What had her nightmare been about? He thought about getting Anna to tell him about the nightmare, but he nodded and got out of bed. "All right."
"I'm sorry." He could hear the tears in her voice. "I can't tonight John, I just can't."
"I understand..." John began.
"No you don't, but thank you for pretending." John could tell the words were coming out without Anna meaning them to.
He grabbed his pillow and spoke, "I'll be on the couch if you need me Anna."
"All right." But Anna had already turned over and huddled under the covers.
John grabbed his cane and left the bedroom. He could see Jacob standing in the doorway of the children's room. "Go back to bed Jacob." John directed kindly. "Everything is fine."
"Is Marmie going to be okay?"
"Yes, she'll be fine." John said, "she just had a nightmare."
Jacob slowly turned and went back into the bedroom. John waited until the teenager was in bed again before he made his way downstairs. He grabbed a biscuit from the tin before making his bed on he couch. Sleep evaded him for several hours. What had Anna's nightmare been about that had made her not want to sleep in the same bed as him? Finally though, he fell asleep.
Anna woke early. Before she opened her eyes she reached out for John but her hands met cold sheets. She yawned and sat up. As she got out of bed and put her house socks on, she realized that John's pillow was missing. Why was his pillow gone? A quick glance at the floor told her that his pillow hadn't fallen to the floor. What had happened?
She got dressed and quietly went downstairs. She could hear John's snores coming from the parlor and she ducked in. Her brow furrowed as she saw him laying on the couch. He had his pillow, and the blanket that was usually on the back of the couch covered most of his body. Why had John moved to the couch last night? She shook her head in confusion but moved into the kitchen to make breakfast. She tried to be quiet but she could hear that she'd woken John and she turned as he walked by. "John," He set his pillow and cane by the stairs before he turned to his wife.
"Yes?"
"Is everything all right?"
"I should be asking you that." John said, "Are you all right after last night?"
"Why shouldn't I be all right?" Anna asked, she stepped closer to her husband. "What happened?"
"You woke both Jacob and Lily up because of a nightmare, you don't remember it?"
Anna couldn't remember any nightmare. "No, I don't remember it." She thought for a moment. "I wonder why."
"Considering how scared you were, maybe it's a good thing you don't remember." John said. He took Anna's hand. "How are you feeling, with the baby?"
"A bit off, but nothing a cup of tea won't help." Anna said, she shooed her husband towards the stairs. "Now go get dressed, it's my first day to see you off to work and I want to make you a good breakfast."
John smiled and gently squeezed Anna's hand before going upstairs to change. By the time he came downstairs, Anna had tea and toast ready and the eggs were almost done.
"If you need anything for the children's education, go ahead and get it." John said.
Anna nodded, "I think we'll do fine with what we've got right now. Miss Bunting is allowing us the use of some old textbooks. The school in town replaced text books a few years ago but she kept a couple of copies. We'll be using those until we can get newer ones."
They chatted while the two of them ate, but soon John was getting his coat and hat on, to go to work. "I'll try to come for lunch, but I can't promise." he told Anna, she nodded and they kissed as Jacob came down the stairs.
"I'm going to work now Jacob, you and Lily be good for Marmie." John said.
"I will." Jacob said, he went to the stove and peered at the pan of eggs. Anna smiled and told the boy "Feel free to eat some, just leave enough for Lily." Jacob nodded and began to help himself to a plate. Anna kissed John again before her husband left for work and then turned back to Jacob. Time for her first full day home to start.
That night, Anna couldn't sleep. She couldn't stop thinking about the nightmare she'd had the night before. She still couldn't remember it, but she knew John wouldn't lie to her either. How bad had the nightmare been if she'd woken Lily and Jacob and asked John to sleep on the couch? She shook her head and hoped that the nightmares would abate soon.
2 weeks later
"How was work today?" Anna asked as John came into the bedroom. It had become habit for Anna to try and stay up for John to come home from work. They usually didn't see each other much during the day. But as her pregnancy progressed, it grew harder for her to stay awake late into the night.
"I don't think it could have gone much worse." John said, he began to undress as he spoke. "First, Isis got sick all over his lordship's shoes, then..." John continued to speak. It seemed like everybody but Mrs. Hughes had something go wrong that day. Buttons had continued to fall off no matter how tightly John sewed them on.
"Oh, we got this in the evening post." John handed Anna a letter. "I didn't have the chance to open it earlier. Maybe the Latimer's will be willing to buy the house..." He shrugged and continued to get ready for bed.
Anna looked at the envelope. It was plain and thin. The handwriting looked familiar but Anna couldn't place it exactly. She'd seen it at the farm, of that she was certain. Finally she opened it.
Dear Anna, John, Jacob and Lily. The letter began, faintly it registered that the handwriting looked rushed, but Anna ignored it and read the letter.
The hotel in York that was up for sale when you were here has finally sold. A family bid on it after the price was reduced last week. Starting February 1st, the Marigold Hotel will operate under the owners Mr and Mrs. John Bates.
You read that right. The owners have accepted the offer Rachel and I put down in your name. They want you both (and Lily and Jacob of course) to come as soon as possible. I haven't told Mama or Papa this, as I felt the news should come from you.
Both the owners and I wait to hear from you, and are anxiously awaiting your response.
Love, Daniel
