The Giver: Jonas Returns
By: Hanchen Lu
In The Giver: Jonas Returns, a benevolent old couple living in the village would find Jonas and Gabe. First, they would give each of them a soothing, hot, bath, where Jonas and Gabe will wake up. After cleaning themselves, Jonas and Gabe will receive a lavish feast for them and also for celebration of the holiday. There would be Christmas ham, turkey, mashed potatoes, wonderful salads, baskets of bread, and of course, holiday eggnog. Jonas rests and wakes up the next morning wondering about he Community and what has happened to it. But then all the events happening in the village pushes the thought to the back of his head. The elderly man and woman then ask if Jonas would be their adopted son, and Gabe be his brother. Jonas agrees to their proposition. Later, Jonas learns that this village is where the food sent to the Community is produced. Years go by and Jonas and Gabe's foster parents pass away. Jonas is a handsome young man and Gabe is a fine boy. Then Jonas remembers his life in the Community. Although this village supplies them with food and shelter each day, Jonas secretly misses the life in the Community. One day, Jonas couldn't bear it anymore. He says farewells to Gabe, makes preparations, and hides on the cargo plane and becomes a stowaway. Upon reaching the Community, Jonas finds it in utter chaos. There has been a dispute over the memories that have come back and a certain few in the Community have become violent. And when Jonas arrived they were attacking the Community Elders' Building for a reform. Due to these acts of violence, a new Receiver-in-training has never been chosen. When Jonas follows what appear to be the leaders of the group, he hears one of them refer to the other as "Lilly-Billy." They were actually his once parents and sister! Jonas then abandons them and goes to the Annex room to find the Giver. Inside, the Giver has finally become an old man. Through the Giver's account of what happened, Jonas learns that after his memories came back, people began to dislike Jonas and soon, this hatred spread throughout the Community. Only a few who where close to Jonas like Fiona, Asher, Lilly, his family, and some others believed he left for a good reason. Through Jonas's account, the Giver learns about what happened ever since Jonas left the Community. Suddenly, the group of Jonas's supporters came to the Annex room. It seems that the Giver was leading these acts of violence. Jonas is then reunited with his family, Fiona, and Asher. Now this is where all hell breaks loose. The Community Elders have called in the backup security force; an elite group of trained professionals that are allowed to use all force necessary to reach their goal. They were allowed to use deadly force to stop the small group from doing any more damage to the community. In this case, guns that shoot darts that inject the venom used for release. Luckily, one of the members of the group was a pilot. They rushed to the airfield and hijacked the still- parked cargo plane. Before they can take off, the guards have blocked off the runway. Then the Giver valiantly sacrifices his life to distract the security force and clear the runway. Before the Giver leaves, though, he tells Jonas his name: Smithy Werbanjagermangenson. Once the plane returns to Elsewhere, everyone who was on the plane stay there and live happily ever after. Jonas and Fiona get married also. To honor Smithy's brave deeds, there was a monument erected for him and Jonas and Fiona's first son goes under the same name.
