A/N: Sorry about the long wait on this chapter but I had writers block all summer. A huge thanks to whiskey-foxtrot 929 I couldn't have done it without your help. There might be a few grammar errors but I am half asleep as I am writing this chapter.

Chapter 13 Aftermath

Several miles down river, Humphrey got out of the water beaten and bloody with half of his bones broken. He looked up at the sky to see a star light night. A tear flowed down his eye. "I'm sorry Kate, I won't make it back." He said. He used what strength he had left to pull him self up onto the river bank. "Maybe if I fall sleep it'll be peaceful."

"I don't think so." Humphrey gasped and looked over to see the man he had killed.

"B-But I thought that I k-killed you..." Humphrey said.

"No, but you tried didn't, isn't that what matters. Oh and don't worry about your mate, something such as beautiful shouldn't be wasted. I think I'll use her as my new slut." He taunted. Humphrey backed up to all his might, but to no avail. The ex-leader walked up Humphrey, put one claw around his neck. "In this game of death there were two players. One of us had to lose…" His paw moved from one side of Humphrey's neck to the other. Humphrey started to choke on his blood. He looked over to where his murderer once stood to see nothing. His vision blurred and faded into nothingness. He lay down and waited for death to come for him.

2 weeks later

She lay in the den that belonged to her recently deceased lover. Kate had returned to Jasper a week ago and hadn't said a word ever since she learned about Humphrey's life. He had been the only happiness she had ever really had. Everyone else told her what to do ever since she was born. Her parents told her how to be a lady, how alphas and omegas, no matter what the occasion could not see one another Behind closed doors and worst of all who to marry. Then there was alpha school, a whole winters worth of do this and do that. When she was with Humphrey she could be whoever she wanted.

"You can't stay here forever." A mans voice said. She looked at the man seeing it was Frost, behind him was Hunter, Chloe and Jenny. They had a fresh deer for her. "We brought you some food." She just looked away. "Come on Humphrey would hate to see you like this." Frost said, but it only made her cry hearing his name again. Frost backed away until he was with his friends. "Yeah I made things worse."

Jenny then stepped up. "Hey I know you miss him, we all do, but Humphrey wouldn't want you to be so lonely. How about I arrange a little hook up with one of…" In the time it took for Jenny to say that sentence, Kate had stood up walked over to Jenny and with one move pinned her against the dens wall with her paw on Jenny's muzzle.

"Don't even think about finishing that sentence I had 'the one' but he's dead now, no one could even come close to half the man he used to be." Kate screamed. Frost opened his mouth to speak but was cut off by Kate. "Don't say any thing just leave." They all respected her decision and left.

"At least she's getting better." Chloe said.

"How do you figure that?" Hunter asked.

"At least she's talking now." Hunter tried to argue with her logic but he couldn't think of anything.

"Eh, I guess you look at it that way." Hunter said.

Back with Kate:

She lay there crying for what must've been the hundredth time that day. "Don't be so sad. You don't look very pretty when you cry." I voice came from behind her, she looked behind her to see nothing but the entrance to her den. She thought nothing of it and turned around, but then when her face was looking straight forward her nose was touching someone else's. She tried to scream but the other wolf's paw silenced her. The wolf stepped into the daylight. It felt as if all her nightmares came true in that moment. There in front of her was the wolf that killed her mate. "Oh Kate don't worry if you don't struggle I'll make this easy for both of us." In that moment she ran away screaming. The leader shook his head. "You choose the hard way."

Kate ran until Hunter got in the way and Kate ran into him, sending both of them to the ground. "Kate what's wrong?" He said holding his side.

"I saw him." Kate said frantically.

"Saw who?" Chloe asked.

"Me." A voice said behind all of them. They all looked behind themselves to see the wolf that Humphrey killed. Hunter and frost got into defensive stands immediately, Kate was behind them scared to death. "You all look surprised to see me."

"Y-you're sup-posed to be dead." Kate said.

"Am I now, I must've not listened to that part." He said. They all looked at him in terror. "How about this, if you're all nice little doggies, I won't kill you."

"I'd rather die than live under the rule of a tyrant." Hunter said.

"I'm with him, you want this valley you'll have to go through us." Frost said.

"I know few things worth dying for, my freedom from slavery is one of them. My friends are another." Jenny said.

"I agree with all that, death seems a lot better than whatever you have planned." Chloe said. Then the leader looked over at Kate.

"What about you Kate? You wanna die with them." She looked at the leader than at them. She kept looking back and forth, her head blew up with thoughts then she ran away. "Well we know her choice." The leader shook his head. "This could've been so simple. But you've all chosen your fates." He tried to charge Chloe but Hunter saw this happening and head butted him in the stomach and sent him flying. He quickly got back up and got into a fighting stance. "Well I guess I might have miss judged you all. No matter just means I have to try now." He taunted.

"Give up its hopeless, it's four against one, you have no shot at winning." Hunter said. Then Jenny was trying to circle him. He saw it coming and right when she was about to pounce he attacked. Swiftly he slammed her head into a tree leaving her unconscious.

"And now it's three to one." The leader said.

"Nope it's still four." A voice said. Everyone looked and saw Daniel walking towards them.

"Oh look the deserter has come to aid the weak."

"Dan what's he talking about?" Hunter asked.

"I used to be part of the Canadian military but they brought me in one day to do experiments on me, I saw what the experiments did to others and it wasn't pretty. I decided to run away before they do anything to me."

"When I found him he was to stupid to hunt and only knew how to fight, I naturally found a use for him." The leader said.

The others looked at Daniel with confusing looks. Until Hunter spoke up. "Your past is your own business, we won't judge you for why you did what you did."

"This is all very touching, I think I might cry, now can we fight!" The leader said.

"Chloe get Jenny out of here and to a safe place." Hunter said. She looked at him and was about to say something when he gave her a conforming look. She pulled Jenny out of the battlefield and tended to her wound.

"So three then?" Frost asked.

"Yep three, we can take this." Hunter said.

Hunter looked straight at the leader and charged. The leader dodged him and went for Frost. He pinned down Frost. The leader was about to go for his throat until Daniel knocked him off Frost. The leader quickly got up and ran after Daniel and threw him against a rock and knocked him unconscious.

"Frost get him outta here. I can take him." Frost did as told and took him to Chloe.

Hunter looked at the leader and circle him, the leader copied his action. They circled each other until Hunter went for his leg and he dodged him. Then the leader went for his neck and missed, but did succeed in flipping him over onto his back. Giving the the leader the vantage.

"Looks like I win." Hunter closed his eyes and waited for death. Then he heard growl, some leaves rustling, and a large thud. Hunter opened his eyes and looked up. Instead of the leader he saw Kate. Next to himself was the leader who was now deceased. Hunter looked up at Kate.

"Thank you."

Three days later all six of them were in a clearing talking about the events of the past few weeks. About Humphrey, the fight and what to do next.

"Hunter, Frost, Daniel, my parents said I have to be the next pack leader. I don't think that I am strong enough to lead a pack. I leave this pack in the three of your hands. Please take good care of my pack."

They all looked at her then at each other. "Kate we promise to lead this pack for better as long as we live."

"Thank you, now I have some personal problems to deal with. I'll see you around all around."

Six months later.

"Mommy watch how fast I can run." A puppy said. He ran a few circles around his mother.

"That is very fast." His mother said.

"Hey mommy where is daddy?" The pup asked.

"I don't know son, but wherever he is I know he's proud of you." She said looking at her child. "It's getting late son, you should go to bed."

"Okay mommy." He said. He curled up into a ball. His mother wrapped herself around him. She looked up into the night.

"I know your proud." She sighed. "I miss you Humphrey." She laid her head down. But if she looked up at the moment she would have seen the stars write a love letter to her. In the sky written with stars were the words 'I miss you too Kate.'
