A Pretty, Red Sunset
A drabble about Kano, Kido and rooftops.
Kano's back was straight, his head tilted slightly to see the setting of the Sun. He wasn't really thinking about much – all he saw was red. Red; like his eyes. Red; like the colour of his mother's blood. Red; like the colour of Ayano-nee's muffler. It didn't bring up good memories for him and he honestly had no idea as to why he was staring so intensely at the bright red sky.
Suddenly, he heard some light footsteps clambering up the ladder that led to the roof. He shifted his positioning a bit.
Only Leader has footfalls that are that silent and precise. As expected of the invisible girl.
After a short while, Kido – as Kano had predicted – appeared beside him. She carried with her two mugs of hot chocolate, a blanket draped over her shoulder.
"Oi, Kano," Kido stated. "You're going to get sick – winter is cold, you know. Here."
She handed the blond boy a mug of coffee and then sat down next to him, wrapping the grey blanket around them both. For a while, the two just sat there – total silence, no words were shared. The only sounds that could be heard were faint sipping noises coming from the two. Then, Kano spoke up.
"I don't know why… But I can't seem to take my eyes off of the sunset," he murmured, his tone solemn. "I don't understand it. Red represents everything that has hurt us and nothing else. But… for some reason… I just-"
"The sunset is pretty, isn't it?" Kido cut in.
"Huh?"
"The sunset – it's pretty. It's not just red; it's orange too. Pink, yellow, a little purple now that night is coming. Sunsets aren't just red and red doesn't necessarily point to all that is bad. I mean-" Kido turned to look at Kano. "- red is the colour of fate, no? (Yes, I did just pull that one from AnS. Ahah.) Without it, the Mekakushi Dan would never have met."
Kano was surprised. Kido usually wasn't so kind to him – he had a few bumps on his head to prove that. Nevertheless, he was happy.
"You're right," he said, his expression much brighter. "Red is a pretty colour. The strawberries on the tart you made last night were red. Leader's eyes are a really nice shade of red as well. Oh, your blush is very cute as well."
At this, Kido flushed – standing up and flinging the blanket in Kano's face.
"Idiot!" she exclaimed. "I shouldn't have tried to help you, you seem just fine!"
She huffed and stormed off the rooftop, climbing down the ladder in a much noisier manner than before. Kano grinned, his eyes bright and his face no longer somber.
"No, I needed that. Really," Kano whispered as he slowly lifted himself off the roof.
Taking the blanket and mug down the ladder was a bit of a hassle, but the extra time taken gave him a little bit of time to think up a plan. Possibly the best plan he had ever had. Smiling once more at the dimming sunset, Kano opened the door to their apartment and quickly caught up to Kido.
"Hey, you know what else is a pretty red?" Kano asked, his tone sly.
Kido grunted, quite uncaring at that point in time. Kano only grinned more.
"Leader's lips."
As soon as Kano had given her a peck, he ran for his life before the green-haired girl could comprehend what had just happened.
(Woah, what the hello did I just do? Ok, another fic from me. Holidays for me for two weeks, so I'll try writing as many as I can before school starts up again. I'm being quite active lately – I mean, I just made that mobile phone cover of Summertime Record yesterday and now I have this. Ahhh, can't forget holiday homework, though.)
