It was becoming oddly normal to have Luffy visit the captain's room and use the captain himself as her own personal resting place. This was rather easy to do, as Whitebeard was more than three times the size of a human being; even a normal human barely stood taller than his own knee, so imagine how tiny someone like Luffy would seem to him.
Today she sits on her shoulder, swinging her legs back and forth as she holds a lollipop in her mouth. "And while we explored the island, Law saved me from falling off a cliff! He was like, super super super duper strong!"
"Is that so?"
"Yeah! And then, after that, he stopped me from falling in a lake. He said not to get to close but I had to, it was really cool to look at! There were fish swimming in there and they were making a 'blub blub' face at me so I had to make a 'blub blub' face at them too!"
"Blub blub face?" He asks. Luffy uses her lips like a fish and points to her mouth.
"Blubblubblubblub..." She grins. "Like this!"
"I see. A fish face, then. What happened next?"
"Then a bear decided it wanted to be my friend, but it couldn't smile very well, so it just showed me it's teeth and got really close to me!" She throws her arms with a remarkable grin on her face.
Whitebeard sweat drops, because really he knows that the aforementioned animal was trying to kill her rather than become friends with her. Luffy was too oblivious for her own good."But then Law killed him. So we couldn't become friends. But, he said it was to see if Thatch could make me soup out of the bear! So I forgave him."
"You brought it back to Thatch?"
"No, it fell in the water and the piranhas ate it." She pouts, "But after Law saved me from falling into a hole, falling into the water, and then again from falling into the ocean; we safely made it back onto the ship with no incidents! And I still got soup!"
No, surely every time Law saved Luffy could be considered an incident. She just laughs it off and chooses to call it having fun, rather than almost dying or injuring herself. Indeed, this was a reckless child. Whitebeard didn't even want to try imagining what would've happened if Law hadn't been there to save her every three seconds.
"I'm sure Law would like it if you were to be a little more careful on your adventures." Whitebeard says as he brings his child into his hands, he pats her head gently with a kind smile while she pout again. "Try as hard as you can, okay?"
She grins. "Okay~"
She pauses and the grin on her face is replaced with a troubled expression; it's almost as if there was an actual question mark forming above her head. "Is there something else on your mind?"
"What are lovebirds?" Luffy asks with genuine curiously. Her head cocks to the side ever so slightly as she questions him. "Uncle Thatch and Uncle Marco keep calling Law and I lovebirds, and it's weird, 'cause the only bird here is Marco."
"Lovebirds... Uh..." Whitebeard avoids eye contact. "Haven't you asked Law?"
She nods furiously. "Yeah! But he won't answer me. He always changes the subject."
"...Uh..." Whitebeard stumbles around ideas in his head, but none of them are helpful with the current situation. "Hey, Law's having his break right now; isn't he? You should go greet him."
She jumps to her feet; the previous question on her mind had been forgotten already as she runs off. "Later, old man!"
The door closes, and he lets out a sigh of relief.
"Lucky!" His eye glints from his successful escape.
oOo
Luffy hums as she walks down the hallway; she makes large movements, but takes slow steps. Feeling oddly relaxed as she doesn't really pay attention as she turns a corner and bumps into a man who easily knocks her down without trying, she falls to the ground with a dull thud and looks up with a slightly surprised expression on her face.
Though she was previously ready to apologize for bumping into him, not a sound comes out of her mouth as she looks up to see who she had bumped into.
Teach.
A strange feeling washes over her; it's one mixed with distrust and fear as he stares down at her with a grin she doesn't quite trust. "Gehahahaha! You're so tiny I didn't see you there... Be more careful of where you're going, someone might just crush you without noticing."
She dumbly nods as he picks her up and sets her down on her feet; he places a hand on her head before stumbling off in the other direction. 'He reeks' Luffy thinks. And it's not just the alcohol. It's his personality.
She furiously shakes her head and continues on. It doesn't take her long to reach the doctor's office. Luffy forces the door open so harshly that it thuds into the wall behind it with a loud thud, she throws her arms up in the air and announces her presence; but no one's there.
She frowns. Her lips form into a annoyed pout.
"Oh. It's hide and seek, then!" She announces with a grin, clapping her hands together in realization and running out the door again.
Behind one of the curtains, Law lets out an annoyed sigh as he continues washing his medical instruments.
oOo
Luffy skids to a stop right before she falls over the rail of the boat, but she slides anyway. Her head is the first thing to fall over the edge of the boat, and then everything else comes afterward. Her limbs flail desperately as they try to upright her body, only to fail completely.
She giggles furiously as the back of her shirt is grabbed and she's saved from falling into the unforgiving ocean; swinging back and forth childishly as she's pulled back over the edge. "Saved me! Thanks!"
A certain blond sends her an annoyed look as he places her on her feet again. "Honestly, how many times can one person endanger themselves in one day?" He mutters, hitting over the head playfully. "Falling over the edge, crashing into random people, tripping over your own two feet, getting eaten, and god knows what else... You're cute, downright adorable; but with such a clumsy little sister, a big brother like me will worry so much that his heart'll pop out of my chest."
"That doesn't sound too good!" She grins.
"Of course not!" He retorts. "So be more careful, okay!"
She rolls her eyes. "Yeah yeah I get it, I get it already!"
Sabo pulls at her cheek, stretching it with narrowed eyes "Are you complaining? Whiny~"
"It's annoying! Everyone's been telling me that I should be more careful... I'm gonna be the Pirate King one day, y'know?" She questions as she crosses her arms. "I'm strong! I'm going to protect everyone, so they don't need to worry!"
"That's quite a goal there, isn't it." Sabo smiles. "I'm sure you can take care of yourself perfectly well, and you know that everyone else can take care of themselves too, right? And yet you worry as much as they do, don't you?"
"Of course!"
"See? We know your strong. It's just that worrying means that we care for you. So don't think about it too much; just smile and say 'thank you for caring'."
"Mmm..." She grins. "Kay!"
oOo
"Thatch!" Luffy announces with a grin, coming to a complete stop on her way over to visit Law. The man grins at her in reply; his eyes smile at her, but she can tell that he's tired because he's just returned.
"Look here!" Thatch wraps his arm around Luffy's shoulders and brings her in really close. He hods his head up high as he boasts at his new finding. "Isn't it cool?" He grins. "I wonder what kind of power it has!"
"Are you gonna eat it now? It tastes really, really bad you know." She says as she makes a foul face; her face goes slightly green at the memory of eating a devil fruit for the first time. She remembers especially how foul it had tasted, and how quickly she had felt sick after the first bite.
"How about we go get something to drink so I can down it with something nice?" He grins cheekily, and she grins back at him. Yet as she turns around, the door has already been closed and Teach is moving towards Thatch at rapid speed.
He attacks, but Luffy gets in the way before his attack can finish. Thatch is down for the count, but Luffy made sure he missed any vital organs. She just hadn't been fast enough to completely prevent the attack.
"What are you doing to Uncle Thatch?!" She asks in horror; eyes wide and mouth agape, she stares at Teach with a series of mixed emotions. How dare he strike down her Uncle?
She wants to fight him. She wants to hurt him like he hurt Thatch, but it was impossible. He was much stronger than her right now, especially in her weakened form. She clenches her fists angrily.
"The only reason I joined this crew was to find that devil fruit; the Yami Yami no mi! Like hell I'm letting a stupid cook and a little brat take it from me!" He grabs the fruit and at the same time, Luffy latches onto his leg. "Let go of me, you little brat!" He hits her over the head repeatedly, but it just bounces back. Just like rubber.
"LA-" She starts to yell, but he slams a hand over her mouth and stops her. She tries her best to make noise despite his large, rough hands covering her mouth. She wiggles and squirms with all her might, but nothing works.
She feels herself getting tired.
A bloody Thatch is the last thing she sees before she passes out.
oOo
Law wipes the sweat off of his brow as he steps out of the operating room. Thatch's injuries were a lot better than they seemed; really the only thing he needed to be treated for was excessive blood loss and the large slash on his chest that, thankfully, hadn't cut any vital organs, veins, or arteries. Whoever it was who had decided to attack Thatch hadn't been aiming to kill him, or made a mistake. Either way, Law was just happy that he was alive.
Luffy would have been devastated if Thatch had died. Surely the whole crew would've had an uproar.
He sits down calmly, sipping at a small cup of water until another thought approaches him. Where... Where was Luffy, anyway? She couldn't have still been looking for him after declaring that not finding him was a challenge to a game of hide and seek, right? He shakes it off; wondering why he was pointlessly worrying about her when she was most likely bothering one of the other crew mates again. Probably Sabo or Whitebeard, if Law had to take a guess.
There's an annoyed glance on his face as he watches the door break, and hundreds of his crew mates fall over after waiting so impatiently outside. He shoos them off- most of them, anyway. Sabo and Marco remain, and they quickly thank him for allowing them to stay.
"Is he going to be okay?" Sabo is the first of the two visitors to speak; his eyebrows are riddled with worry and he frowns at the sight of his brother in such a condition.
"He's going to be fine. His vital organs were missed, and the damage was easy to take control over. The only thing he was in danger of was loosing too much blood or getting an infection."
"Who... Who do you think would have attacked him in the first place?" Marco asks. He pulls a chair up to the side of the hospital bed, leans back, and crosses his arms over his chest.
"Who knows?" Law sighs. "Though I can't imagine Thatch doing anything that would provoke someone to get revenge on him, but I suppose it's just the means of provoking the wrong person at the wrong time."
"Think about it. It was midday when this happened, and I honestly doubt that anyone would be able to sneak on board in the middle of the day when we're active- whether they were in their right minds or not." Sabo muses while holding a hand to his chin, his cheeks puffs up in thought and for a moment Law wonders if this is how Luffy managed to get the same habit.
It's cute on her, though.
He hates to admit.
"It was an inside job." Law interrupts his own train of thought in order to prevent a blush and continue the conversation. "Which means there's a chance there are more people involved. We might have more than one traitor."
"And there's a possibility that someone might have seen it all happen." Marco suggests. "He was making out katakana characters with his blood; but in the frenzy of it all, I never made out the letters."
"I didn't want to say it because it seems suspicious, but those characters read 'Luffy'."
"'Luffy'?" Law raises an eyebrow at Sabo's sudden statement; "He couldn't possibly have been saying that Luffy did this."
"I doubt Luffy would do something like this too, but it's something we should probably look into." Marco mutters.
"YOU IDIOTS!" A raspy voice practically rumbles the room; the three boys turn to face the recently awakened Thatch. He's pale, panting, and has a look on his face that's a mixture of devastation and frustration. "LUFFY... Luffy... Lu...ffy... I was... writing... 'Save... Luffy'"
"Save Luffy!?" Law's eyes widen.
"Who did this, Thatch?"
"Did they take my little sister?!"
The man in the hospital bed furiously drinks the cup of water that Law had placed by his side. He slams it down on the nightstand so roughly that it cracks. "Teach... Blackbeard wanted my devil fruit. He t-tried to kill me in order to get it, Luffy distracted him right before his blade killed me. I couldn't do... anything... as that man took Luffy... away..." He wipes his tearing eyes, remembering just how much Luffy had struggled to get away and how much worry she had sent in his direction. He hadn't been able to do a thing.
"Teach took Luffy!"
Law suddenly becomes silent as he glares down at his scalpel; his eyes are wide and shaded over with darkness, he looks ready to murder someone.
Sabo pales.
oOo
"Just let go of me already!" Blackbeard complains as he tries to shove Luffy's unconscious body off of him, her arms are stretched and wrapped around his leg as if if they were rubber bands; no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't pull her off.
Finally, with one last yell her arms retract and she falls to the ground harshly. Her face is the first thing to hit the dirt floor; he kicks her in annoyance, and then moves to leave, but something stops him.
Her shirt reveals the skin on her back. It looks somewhat messy and torn up, it's obvious that something or multiple objects had been removed from it and even now there are still some black rocks that seemed to stick out. Curious, he pulls up her shirt and finds himself digging his fingers into her back.
He pulls out one of the many rocks still lodged into her skin and holds it up to his face. "Seastone?" He questions, throwing it aside and digging through her back to pull out another piece. "Is this all seastone?"
Luffy's face scrunches up in pain as she comes to. Her eyes are open wide and her mouth rests in a silent yell as she begins to feel the scorching pain from her injury being messed with. "That h-hurts!" She cries. His reply is a sadistic grin.
"Y'know, you could've seriously messed up my plans back at Whitebeard's ship. I would've been caught and killed!" He yells, wiggling one of the bigger pieces back and forth before ripping it out. The blood slides down her shirtless back and pools on the ground. "This is your punishment."
Luffy buries her face into the ground and tries to control herself. "W...Wh... What ha-hap-happened to Thatch? You d-didn't... kill him did you?"
"I did~" He sings, pulling out a piece of seastone that was lodged pretty deeply into her back. "He's dead, he's dead! If only you weren't so weak, perhaps you could've protected him better."
"S...Shut up!" She cries.
"Maybe I'll go after that Law of yours next? Right after I finish killing you..." He hums, and then pauses momentarily. "Did you know that if I'm really carefully, I can keep you conscious while I remove your guts?"
A horrified expression appears on her face.
"Gehahahaha! I like that look!" He drops the last piece on the ground. "I'm out of time, so I'll just let you die and do it to your little boyfriend." He stands from his crouched position, and he's gone as quickly as he had appeared.
Luffy stares at the ground angrily. She doesn't even have enough energy to call for help, let alone look at the wound on her back. She feels tears pool in her eyes.
She's never felt so helpless in her life.
"Luffy?!" A familiar voice calls. Luffy moves her head just enough to see her big brother running towards her with tears in his eyes. He drops to his knees and places his hands on her head. "Oh god, god Luffy don't die! Listen, I'm sorry! I'm sorry for everything I've ever done and everything I'll do in the future. Even now I'm just a stupid idiot, and I know I can never make it up to you and I know it's selfish but please Luffy. Please... Please... Please don't die!"
He's crying. He's crying so harshly that there are tears streaking down his face like rivers, his eyebrows are so furrowed that they're leaving creases in his forehead, his bottom lip is quivering, and he's shaking.
"Ace."
She reaches up and presses her hands against his cheeks. "Smile... I... I never stopped loving you...!" She cries as she weaves her hands through his hair. "Stupid... brother."
Her eyes close.
Ace screams as what's left of his heart shatters into pieces.
oOo
