Chapter 14: The End

The second they stepped off their plane in America Dimitri sagged against Nicholas, "is it over?" He asked.

Nickolas gave the barest hint of a smile, "not quite yet, we still have to deal with the welcome committee," he pointed. Roderich, Eliza, Vash, Lovino, Antonio, Bella, Feliks, Toris and even Francis and Gilbert were all coming to meet them.

"Brace yourself," said Nickolas.

In the end it was the others who needed to brace themselves, the second they were close enough Dimitri luged forward and grabbed Elizabeta hugging her tightly, lifting her clean off her feet and spinning her round in a circle.

"I missed you!" He yelled.

Elizabeta laughed, "I missed you too," she said warmly while Roderich and Nickolas stared, dumbstruck.

Just then Dimitri remembered that as Mina he probably wouldn't have the strength to lift Eliza up and spin her around and set her down hastily.

However it seemed that all of his friends who didn't know his secret had bigger things to wonder about.

"So Mina, what's this Roderich's been telling us about a big secret?" Asked Bella, "do you have something to tell us?"

Dimitri met Roderich's eyes, he knew what the brunet was thinking, after telling Nickolas, wouldn't telling everyone else be a breeze? Magda had called off their engagement; Dimitri no longer had to hide. His parents could kidnap him and drag him back to Romania as many times as they liked, it wouldn't change a thing, he was a legal adult now, this was his life.

"Guys I'm a guy." He said bluntly and without preamble, he'd done dramatically revealing his secret once, it wasn't fun. The reactions were varied, at first, naturally, came dismissal and denial.

After a few seconds, Gilbert laughed, "ha, good one Mina, if you were a guy, the awesome me would know about it." Beside him, Toris coughed once and fidgeted uncomfortably, Feliks smirked and, to Dimitri's surprise, so did Francis.

When neither Dimitri nor any of the others around them made any attempt to write this off as a joke, Antonio, Gilbert, Lovino and Bella glanced at each other, then at Dimitri and Nicholas again. The two ex-princes glanced at each other.

"Do you want to explain or should I? I don't mind, you're probably tired of telling this story by now," said Nickolas.

Dimitri squeezed his hand, touched by his thoughtfulness, "I'll tell it, I owe everyone that much at least."

He began to tell his story, beginning with Roderich helping him leave Romania and ending with them touching down at the airport and deciding that keeping his secret was no longer a necessity.

When he finished even Roderich was absolutely speechless, Dimitri mentally winced, that wasn't a good thing, was it?

Eventually Gilbert gave a startled laugh, "seriously?"

"Seriously," Dimitri confirmed.

Lovino and Antonio glanced at each other, Lovino gave a half-shrug, Antonio took his hand and smiled at Dimitri, understanding what Lovino was trying to tell them, "it's alright with us," he said.

Nicholas stared at their intertwined hands, this was new.

Dimitri looked relieved, that relief changed into pure joy when Bella and Gilbert chipped in and agreed, Francis just shrugged lightly and smiled, he didn't seem too surprised. Roderich glanced at the blond out of the corner of his eye.

Did he...know? The brunet wondered, he shook the thought off; there was no way Francis could've known without being told...or figuring it out on his own.

Dimitri looked around his circle of friends, a group of open, accepting faces, "hang on," he said, throwing up his hands, "isn't anyone feeling, ya know...mad...betrayed...upset in some way?" It wasn't that he wanted to fight with them, it was just that, after everything he and Nickolas had gone through, he had been expecting more...resistance.

Feliks stormed forwards and planted a finger in the middle of Dimitri's chest, then turned to glare accusingly from Dimitri to Nickolas.

"I'm angry," he snapped, Dimitri raised an eyebrow, why was he angry? The other blond had known since the beginning that Dimitri was a guy, he'd helped. "Why didn't you two tell me you were, like, together?! You traitors!" He stormed off to stand huffily, arms folded, beside Toris who rolled his eyes and gave an indulgent smile.

After that the gang walked back to their respective cars, Vash would be driving Nickolas and Dimitri back along with Roderich and Elizabeta.

As they walked to the car they chatted with their friends, "so...Dimitri, what are you gonna do for school, are you still gonna pretend to be a girl?" Bella asked, walking backwards to speak with them.

Dimitri nodded, "yeah, It's not exactly life-or-death anymore but I'd still like to keep a low profile. And I cant exactly explain to the University that I'm really a guy and all of my personal information was a forgery, so I'll just keep pretending to be a girl in school. I really don't wanna move schools either, I like this one, all of you guys go there."

Bella nodded, "then I take it that you don't want us spilling that you're a guy during school?"

Dimitri grinned, "no, not really. I would appreciate it if you guys kept that fact to yourselves."

Bella winked, "gotcha."

She skipped off to heckle her ex-fiancé and his new boyfriend, Dimitri and Nickolas drew level with Toris and Feliks, Toris was smiling slightly, a spring in his step, Feliks was glaring moodily in front of him, arms still folded, Dimitri and Nickolas fell into step beside the brunet.

"So Toris," said Dimitri, "did you ever give those guys who beat you up what for or something?"

Toris nodded shyly, "well not me personally, but my boss -from my other job, not Feliks- did. I don't have any proof or anything. Mr. Braginski just said he'd spoken with them and the next day Roderich told me they were all in hospital." Toris sweat-dropped and his smile turned slightly shaky and slightly embarrassed, "Mr. Braginski can be a bit...much sometimes."

"Good for you," Dimitri said, grinning. Toris pulled a face.

Dimitri squeezed Nickolas's hand, smiling when the Bulgarian squeezed back. "Is it over now?" He asked.

Nickolas squeezed his hand again, "yes. It's over."
Or so he thought.

When they arrived at Dimitri and Nickolas's apartment the formerly mentioned pair collapsed into chairs, exhausted. Elizabeta smiled sympathetically and went to make everyone a cup of coffee, Vash and Roderich moved Nickolas's and Dimitri's bags into their rooms, murmuring quietly together. Nickolas muttered a thanks to them and then ran a hand down his face, mussing up his brown locks, he sighed deeply, "long day." He muttered, it had been a long week.

Dimitri grinned from his spot on the other armchair, "worth it though."

Nickolas glanced up and his deep brown eyes caught Dimitri's sparkling red ones and despite himself, he smiled back, "yeah, it was."

Just then there was a polite knock on the door, Dimitri rose and padded over to it, Bella Erkson stood there, hand poised to knock again.

"Hi Mi-er-Dimitri!" She said brightly, she held up his iPod, "you left this in your classroom the day before you left. Lovino picked it up. I just came round to return it when I remembered I still had it but I think you should know," she looked uneasy, "there's a crazy-looking blond woman on the corner demanding to know if anyone's seen a 'Dimitri Drakulya' and showing people a picture of you. I didn't tell her I knew you but I just thought you ought to know."

She handed Dimitri his iPod back, he took it with a muttered 'thanks,' concern all over his features, his brow furrowed as he thought about all the blond women who might be after him for whatever reason.

Roderich and Vash came out of Nickolas's and Dimitri's rooms.

Roderich chewed the inside of his lip thoughtfully, "that doesn't sound good, I'll-" he took a step forward and then hesitated.

"Anyone who knows you well will probably recognise me too." He turned to Vash, "can you go take a look? See if it's anyone Dimitri knows personally and what she wants?"

Vash nodded wordlessly, he didn't make it any further than the middle of the room when a figure appeared behind Bella and threw her out of the way, and she tumbled towards the floor, cutting of a yip of pain as her ankle twisted, Dimitri lunged forwards, catching her and preventing her from hitting the floor. He caught her in a dip and then pulled her slowly to her feet, letting her rest her weight on him instead of her injured foot as turned to lead her over to the couch.

"Well isn't that sweet?" A voice, even more horribly familiar than Magda's sneered, "my son rescuing a damsel in distress. Ha! I wish!"

Roderich and Vash were staring, horrified, at the woman in the doorway, Nickolas's expression mirrored theirs as he realised who this woman was. Slowly Dimitri turned until his ruby eyes met a rust-coloured pair so similar and yet so different to his own.

"Mamă?" He asked incredulously.

Nickolas nearly face-palmed, he knew this was a very serious situation, but all he could think was; really? Do we seriously have to go through this song and dance again?

Dimitri's mother's eyes glittered with dislike, "you insolent little bastard!" She hissed at her son in Romanian.

"Hey!" Dimitri protested, "I'm not little! 5'7 is perfectly average!"

Nickolas rolled his eyes.

"You lying, sneaky brat!" She snapped, striding into the room.

Dimitri inclined his head, "okay, I'll give you that one."

He stopped all his joking and his eyes narrowed into angry slits when his mother pulled a butchers knife from the folds of her coat and pointed it at him, then lowered it slightly to point at Bella.

"Come with me. Now, you'll go back to Romania and do your duty as Prince or I'll cut the pretty one's face off."

Bella didn't speak Romanian so she didn't know what Dimitri's mother was threatening, she got the gist however.

Dimitri turned his body slightly so he was in between Bella and the knife.

"She's bluffing Bella," he murmured comfortingly, his steady eyes, filled with distaste, never leaving his mother's. "She couldn't hurt a fly if she tried, she's a weak, pathetic coward who doesn't know how to do anything but bully and hurt people to get what she wants."

Bella nodded, her face set, she glared at Carmilla with equal venom.

Roderich stepped forwards, "now now Carmilla, do you really want word getting back to Romania that the Queen threatened her only son with a knife when she was trying to get him to come home? That won't look good." His tone was bored, almost condescending, the knife swung his way. Roderich didn't even bat an eyelid; Vash gave Dimitri's mother a look that said 'just try it.'

She never got the chance, just then Elizabeta strode out of the kitchen, hands on her hips, frying pan clenched in one, "And what exactly is going on here?!" She demanded in Romanian, she strode up to Carmilla, heedless of the long knife, and pointed the frying pan at her. No one else moved. They knew that if it came down to any sort of fight, Eliza wouldn't be the one they needed to worry about.

"Now you listen to me you vicious harpy!" Elizabeta snapped, both Dimitri and Roderich snickered.

Eliza took a step forwards, Carmilla took a step back, "Dimitri is a wonderful, loving, loyal, brave, caring human being. Don't you dare ever say otherwise!"

"Wow Elizabeta, didn't know you thought so," Dimitri murmured, he was ignored.

Elizabeta took another step forward; Carmilla took another step backwards, "Dimitri is a legal adult now and has every right to live where he wants, when he wants, with who he wants! And there's nothing you can do about it!"

She took another step forward, Carmilla was past the threshold now, "you are a weak, stubborn, stupid woman who gives our gender and humans in general a bad name. Don't ever threaten anyone unless you can carry it out and since you can't, I suggest you leave right now, or I will carry out my threats and make you very, very sorry!" She snatched the knife from the blonde's grip and shoved her into the hall.

Bella released her grip on Dimitri's arm and limped forwards, "and I am not a damsel in distress!" She slammed the door and locked it. Elizabeta held up her free hand and Bella high-fived her, looking at Elizabeta with an expression of complete adoration on her face. The guys all stood around in stunned silence until Roderich began to clap slowly.

"Bravo ladies," he said simply.

Elizabeta grinned and gave an elegant curtsy, "why thank you!"

Bella limped over to the couch and slumped down on it, "is it always like this with you guys?!"

"Yeah, pretty much," murmured Nickolas, not missing a beat, as he rose to fetch an ice pack for Bella's victimised ankle.

Vash stared at the door they had just shoved Carmilla through, "how pathetic," he said quietly, though only Roderich heard him.

After Nickolas had gotten an ice pack for Bella, Dimitri walked over to him and wrapped an arm around him, he leaned up to kiss the brunet's cheek and held out his phone at arms length to take a photo of the two of them, "smile!" He said, "I'm sending it to her," he took the photo and then sent it to his mother.

A shriek of rage sounded from further down the street, Nickolas chuckled, "I don't think she liked it too much," he said, trying to keep his tone light. This woman might be a 'vicious harpy' but she was still Dimitri's mother.

Dimitri smiled at him reassuringly, guessing what his boyfriend was thinking, "in the words of an ancient poet; 'frankly my dear, I just don't give a damn'."

Nickolas rolled his brown orbs, "that's from 'Gone with the Wind,' hardly an ancient poet."

"It's a classic!" The blond protested.

Nickolas rolled his eyes again and turned to Roderich, "do you think she'll give up?" He asked, looking from Dimitri to Roderich, posing the question to both of them.

"She'd better," Elizabeta said darkly, bringing in the coffees she'd been brewing before turning to fuss over Bella.

Dimitri shrugged, Roderich rolled his eyes, "she wouldn't dare do anything, that's why she came alone-off the record. Though I suspect she'll find a more petty passive-aggressive way to get back at the six of us." His violet gaze flicked over to Elizabeta, "she'll probably try and get our engagement terminated."

"Oh no!" Said Elizabeta with a small smile. Her gaze went from Vash to her fiancé(?) and back again before she decided, screw it, I'm going to do it anyway.

She ran forwards and shoved Roderich into Vash. The two toppled over and, cursing, blushing and stammering apologies to the other person (even though this was in no way their fault) tried to untangle themselves. Elizabeta squealed and began taking photos on her own phone, saying something about 'yaoi' and 'fanfiction.'

Nickolas sighed and rolled his eyes, two habits, he feared, that would become increasingly common in his life, while Dimitri smiled and snuggled into his side, "don't worry," Nickolas said softly, "this time it really is over."

Seated on the couch, her foot on the coffee table, Bella laughed softly.

They were happy.
