GENESIS

Summary: Minato has a twin sister, who dies of a mysterious attack. Left with his sisters' daughter and having to deal with the fact that his beautiful wife is also pregnant gives Minato a bit of a rush as he starts to feel overwhelmed. When Kushina gives birth to Naruto during the attack on Konoha, Minato seals part of the Kyuubi within his son, and with no other choice, seals the rest within his wife Kushina, the two kids are left without guardians. Naruto and Kagome, who is only a year older than he is, are left to care for one another, and as they grow up, they find that they care for one another much more than they think they should, and really, they don't care. Not until they start to fall for other people...

Chapter Two

Happiness was by the handfuls. Itachi who was almost always training, or hovering around the two pregnant mothers, had been put in charge of watching Kagome while Minato was away in a meeting and Kushina was taking care of business. Though, his father stressed that his training should come first always, his mother would shoot him down and Itachi would get away with playing with Kagome. He couldn't wait till his little brother was born. He would be able to play with both him and Kagome. He reacted without pause when he felt a hand dip into his weapons pouch. Smirking as he took the Kunai from Kagome's hand as she looked on in confusion. "You aren't old enough to even look at these."

"Na!?" Her voice raised in pitch as she lifted her hands in a shrug.

He couldn't get enough of her over the top reactions. It was too much. She was so animated, watching her get excited and voice her thoughts always managed to slap a smile across his lips. "When you get older."

"No now?"

"Not now,"

"Now?" She tilted her head and asked again, holding her hand out as she tried to get him to give her the toy he played with.

"No, no, not now."

"...no, no." She shook her head, then in a manner that looked to be too much effort for the task at hand, she pushed herself to her feet and wobbled off to find something else to play with.

Pocketing the Kunai, he fastened his pouch before returning his attention to Kagome. Standing to chase after the quickly moving toddler, a sudden groan and cry of pain called to him and he turned towards his house. "Mom?" Running to Kagome, he lifted her into his arms and ran inside to find his mother crouching down in pain.

"I-it's nothing to worry about, Itachi. J-just...the baby...your brother is...ah!"

Itachi felt his eyes widen, "is he coming!? I'll be right back with a medic nin! Kagome, hold on tight,"

"Mn! Go, go, go!" She cheered loudly. Recognizing the instruction to hold on, same as when Minato was about to run really fast with her. Just like him, Itachi took off running towards the hospital in Konoha. His eyes on the large building as he raced forward, eyes focused as he looked for a medic nin.

"Baby!" Kagome cried out happily, pointing as Mikoto showed off her newest addition to the Uchiha Clan. "Is baby!"

"He is a baby, and such a cutie!" Mikoto smiled, "I might bias though."

"Mm..." she reached forward but was lifted out of reach of the baby before she could touch the sleeping infant. Holding her was none other than Kushina who was sporting her own baby bump.

"Your next, Kushina."

"Shina!"

Kushina sighed, placing her hand longingly on her belly, she smiled at the baby that was held in Mikoto's arms. "Kagome got to see something amazing today, right?" Asking the little girl in her arms, she wasn't disappointed when she pointed down at the newest Uchiha. "What's his name?"

"Sasuke...Sasuke Uchiha."

"Mom, can I hold him?"

Mikoto moved over in the bed she lay in and let her oldest climb in beside her before wrapping an arm around him as she guided her youngest into his arms. This was his first time holding a baby, his brother at that. "Itachi, look at you. Such a good boy." She rested her head on his head and kissed him sweetly on his hair.

"I'm only holding him..." he stared at the baby in awe, "Sasuke...you and Kagome, I'll keep you both safe. I promise."

Kushina smiled, "Oh? What about Naruto? He'll be Kagome's brother once he's ready to come out."

Mikoto laughed, "are you tired of being pregnant?"

"It was great when I found out I was pregnant, but now, it's like I swallowed a bunch of ten-pound weights, and they are nestled in my belly."

Itachi frowned and glanced at the Fourth Hokage's wife, her comparison weirded him out but what did he know? "I'll look out for all of them. All the children of Konoha! Sasuke, Kagome, Naruto...and the rest of the children in the village."

Mikoto laughed, "that's quite a promise, Itachi."

"Let's see," Kushina looked on thoughtfully, "Kagome, are you going to help Itachi protect the Children in Konoha too?"

"Help Ita!"

Smiling, Itachi wasn't sure of his own words, but watching Kagome, and gazing down at his own brother...how hard could it be?

(Three Months Later)

Tearing through the streets, Itachi ran with Sasuke in his arms as he made his way to where the children and women were being ushered. His heart racing as he looked up at the enraged Demon Fox that was terrorizing the Village Hidden in the Leaves.

October 10, the date was etched into his head as he stopped at the hospital. "...Kagome and the Fourth Hokage, they went to the Hospital with Kushina..." he wondered if he should have continued towards the hide away. He didn't. "Hang in there, Sasuke. We need to see to Kagome's safety too!" He disappeared from the street and up onto a roof before jumping off into the distance and running towards the large building. However, before he reached it, a loud explosion tore through the building and he turned to protect his brother from the force of the destruction.

"Itachi!"

He looked back and his eyes widened as the Fourth landed in front of him with Kushina and Kagome in his arms. Kushina was holding an infant close to her chest as she looked worriedly at the Demon Fox further behind them. "Lord Hokage..."

"I need you to take Kagome and get to safety! Can you do that!?"

Kagome looked to be in a panic at the screaming and loud destructive blasts from the attacks of the Kyuubi.

"I'll take her with us. I came for her anyways." He knelt as Minato quickly tied Kagome to his back with a wrap. The little girl buried her face fearfully in Itachi's back as Minato rubbed her back gently.

"Kagome, look at me."

Her wide blue eyes turned and met Minato's.

"I might not get to see you again. So I want to properly say goodbye, Kagome."

"You go?"

"...I'm afraid so. I can't promise you I'll come back."

"...na go. Na go!" She cried. Understanding loss, understanding that she never saw her mother again after she left. She loved Minato. She loved Kushina. Why did they have to leave her too?! "Na, na! Nato! Na go, Nato!"

He smiled, charmed by his niece, "Kagome, I love you little one. Promise to watch out for Naruto."

"Oh?" Tears streamed her cheeks as she looked around for the baby that had been born. She reached for it, but before anything could be added, the Demon Fox sent a blast of chakra spiraling their way. Itachi jumped out of the way, splitting from Minato who had gathered Kushina in his arms and protected his family. "NA! NATO! SHINA!"

Itachi ran as fast as he could, his heart breaking as he left the Fourth Hokage and his wife to deal with the Demon behind them. On this day...the darkest day in Konoha...Itachi swore to protect Konoha the way Minato had done.
