The gurgles of a baby exited the lift, followed by the weak laughing from the same infant. And the happiness could only be explained through one word 'Jonny.' He held his daughter carefully in his arms making childish faces at her, which in turn was making Flick laugh continually. 'Shall we find Mummy, Flick?' he uttered, walking through the corridors of Darwin before pushing open Mr Hope's and Ms Naylor's joint office door.
'Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday dear Mummy,
Happy Birthday to you!'
Sang the Scotsman cheerfully to his wife whom sat in her cream office chair dressed in navy blue scrubs. Thankfully the desk which was usually occupied by Elliot was empty, leaving the family alone to share the moment. He then proceeded to hand their child over to her mother, as well as placing a small pile of presents and two cards on the desk in front of Jac.
'Happy Birthday sweetheart' was added, followed by kissing her soft lips.
'Thanks Maconie' the Consultant sarcastically replied, trying to open the cards one handed.
After a brief struggle two handpicked cards were revealed; one labelled 'Happy Birthday to my beautiful Wife' the other 'Happy Birthday to a wonderful Mummy.' Both were a first in the woman's life. The presents were then opened with help from their daughter who seemed to enjoy shredding the paper into tiny pieces and dropping it onto the floor. The small pile of presents were opened; one revealing a box with a set of diamond earrings and another a silver picture frame complete with a beautiful photo of the red head and her daughter.
On seeing the picture frame Flick wriggled excitedly clapping her hands.
'Who's that Felicity?' laughed her mother 'Is that you? My beautiful girl' the infants eyes lit up as she made eye contact with Jac, and at the same times Jac's stomach jumped. To have such love for one person she had previously thought to be impossible, but it wasn't. 'Don't you start work in an hour?' she then questioned, looking at Jonny. His response was to nod before opening his mouth.
'I'm going to take her down to the crèche then Mo's going to take her for a few hours'
'Is she? Why's that?' continued Jac, sorting out Flick's clothing and rubbing her back
'I thought, as it's your birthday, we could head to the theatre' his wife raised her left eyebrow at the suggestion, a little perplexed about why her husband would possibly think she would want to spend several hours in the west end.
Holding hands the 'Maconie couple' left the hospital through the main entrance. Jac dressed in a combination of smart-casual attire and Jonny in his usual jeans and leather jacket.
'Jonny, you're going to the wrong way. The car's that way' the female pointed to her right, in the direction of the spot of where they parked their car every day without fail.
'Drinks at Albies first to get the evening started' he instructed, gently pulling Jac by her arm to the left
As the pair entered Albies reception it seemed unusually quiet. Most nights after their shifts them and their colleagues would trek the short distance and put back a few alcoholic drinks. On that particular night it appeared that everybody had gone straight home instead. And the lighting seemed to have given out as well. Brilliant.
Jonny pushed Jac in front of him and let her walk ahead first into the bar area.
'HAPPY BIRTHDAY!' came a chorus of shouting, familiar voices as the lights were turned up and Ms Naylor almost jumped out of her skin at the surprise.
'HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU,
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU,
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR JAC,
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!'
They all sang, followed by three cheers as a giant birthday cake was bought out from the back and pushed into the surgeons face for her to blow out the candles; which she did, of course, in one large puff. The woman was surrounded by the people who carried about her most; Sacha, Mary-Claire, Elliot, Mo, Serena- to name a few. All of them had fought to keep the birthday party a surprise for weeks; creeping around behind the consultant's back making arrangements.
Jonny took the mic from the side and stood beside his wife.
'Now, I know you won't do a speech and we wouldn't expect you to either. So I'll do the honours and embarrass you in front of our friends' he paused briefly whilst everyone, including Jac, laughed 'First of all I'd like to wish my stunning wife a very Happy Birthday, and then I'd like to thank everybody for making this possible. On several occasions I came so close to cracking and just giving the game away but we did it guys. Now, unfortunately our daughter can't be here to tonight. Something tells me that Jac wouldn't have agreed to let her in a boozer just yet. But the last year has been incredible and that's all thanks to you- Mrs Maconie. And, just as everyone else is, I am incredibly proud of you darling' he finished by kissing his wife's cheek as everyone clapped. 'So all please raise your glasses to my wife; to Jac!' to which the group did as they were instructed.
