Separate Ways

Okikagu Month Day 6 Prompt: Unexpected

by: rennomiya

Kagura released a long, tired sigh. Her patience was almost at her limit, and she knows that Okita was going to notice it sooner or later. That is why she decided to tell him enough is enough.

Of course, she knew that Sougo wouldn't accept it that easily. They had been going through this far longer than average couples. But he has to learn that sometimes, he must swallow his pride and learn to let go. She was tired of him. There is no progress whatsoever. Everyday it was the same. It was shameful to see him this way. And it was shameful for her to even give him a chance.

She gave him a chance, but he was taking too much time. Taking her for granted, and not even showing remorse, even though it was obvious that he needs this more than her. It was time for them to go their separate ways. To hell with his ego.

"I think it's about time we end this for good," she finally told him.

Sougo tightened his grip on her hand. "No," he blatantly answered. "No, China, I just… can't."

Kagura looked sideways, her brows knitted regretfully. To think that the greatest sadist in the universe had fallen this low because of her. Because of me, she repeated in her head.

"I'm sorry you had to feel this way because of me," she muttered softly. "But you just have to accept that I don't want to do this anymore."

"After all this time we had been together like this, you can't expect me to just stop," Sougo said. He continued on staring at her with determination. He knew she was thinking this whole thing was a bad idea. But he wouldn't just give up that easily.

Yes, he had been taking his time. Too much, probably. But that doesn't mean he'll let go of her that easily. Call him greedy, he won't care. He admits to it, even. He continued on holding her hand, never wanting to let go.

It's not over until both parties think it's over.

He recalled all of the times they were together. Every single day was a riot with her. And he couldn't feel more satisfied. He didn't want to end this just like that. No, scratch that, he didn't want to end this at all. Not until he gets what he wants.

"Sougo, stop it. It's over," Hijikata, who had been watching the two of them with Kondo and the other two Yorozuya, told him with a shake of his head. "Stop shaming yourself."

Sougo's hold on her hand loosened, as if hesitantly accepting reality. He lowered his head and asked, "Why? Is it because I took too much time?"

Kagura nodded slightly.

Kondo tried to cheer up his comrade. He patted his shoulder. "Come on, Sougo! The world is not ending! China-san just wants you to give up. That doesn't mean everything is over!"

"Just be a man and deal with it," Hijikata said.

Sougo couldn't believe it. After all this time he had been with her… it's over? They're done? Clenching his fist tightly, he spitefully accepted his defeat. Remorse taking over his mind, he thought that maybe he shouldn't have taken her for granted.

"I'm glad it's done though," Gintoki said frankly, which earned him a scolding from Shinpachi for being too harsh.

"Of course you're happy," Sougo said and finally let go of her hand. He glared furiously at the silver-head. "You're not the one treating everyone to dinner!"

Gintoki laughed mockingly. "You're the one who lost the arm-wrestling match to her! You two had been arm-wrestling for three days straight! And you can't even move her arm! Of course, she's going to get tired of you, bwahahaha!"

All of them nodded in agreement.

"You're the one who made the bet anyway," Kagura added as an afterthought.

All of them nodded in agreement.

Sougo's wallet died that day.
