It's been a while since I published anything on here, I've hit a really hard block and trying to keep my attention long enough on anything to write it fully… it's not been easy.
However, while cleaning out my files, I found this.
When I started writing The Sound of Scrap's Heart, this was the original ending. But I very quickly realised, it wasn't going to work as it was too fragging SAD!
I've decided that you deserve to at least read it and decide for yourselves.
Sleep Well
Panting as he ran, the dark blue haired man hurried up the gravel pathway to the old building as it stood surrounded by a beautiful countryside but he had no time to take in the sight. He just ran up to the doors and hurried inside. There was a wide opening after the door with one man stood in it.
The other turned and looked at him with a clear frown. "Frag Soundwave, what took you?"
"I'm sorry Knockout. Am I too late?"
"Not yet, no." He sighed and looked at the bunch of red and white flowers in his hands and shifted uncomfortable.
Soundwave placed a hand on his friend's shoulder softly. "Are you sure you want to do this?"
He nodded and took a deep breath. "Yeah. I have to. It's the least I can do."
Soundwave was about to say something when a young woman with dark brown hair in a bun came over to them and nodded. "Hi there."
"Hey. Knockout and Soundwave. We're here to see Eleanor Tripson-Wave."
The woman nodded. "Of course. If you would like to follow me."
The pair of young looking men followed her into the building and up some stairs, down a long hallway past several identical doors before she opened it, stepping inside, the other two shifting a little.
"El?" The woman said softly. "You have some visitors."
Stepping into the room, the two took in the room slowly. It was warm and well lit, a soft pink colouring with a large mirror on the wall and a few other furnishings, filled with small mementoes from across the world and even beyond it, reflecting the person inside but the main thing of the room was the large double bed near the window.
Stepping over, the pair stood on either side of the bed and looked at the figure lying tucked into it. Soundwave felt himself tremble, biting his tongue trying not to not show the sadness that was now creeping into his spark.
His mate, lying there, her long red hair now grey and willowy, her skin sagged and wrinkled, her eyes closed peacefully and her breathing shallow.
Knockout placed the flowers on the bedside table and reached out to her, gently taking hold of her hand. "Hello El." He whispered, not wanting to wake her.
"I'm afraid she doesn't have much longer." The nurse said calmly. "She's comfortable but call we can do now is wait."
The cybertronians nodded but said nothing, just looking at the woman before them, watching her calmly as she slept. The nurse nodded softly before turning away and closing the door behind her.
Knockout let out a deep breath and looked at his comrade. "There's nothing I can do Soundwave."
"I know." He whispered, stepping over and taking the other seat. "Some things… some things can't be stopped."
Silence fell between the pair before suddenly the woman began to cough slightly, her whole body shaking from the effort. Knockout quickly moved to support her and ease the fit while Soundwave poured a glass of water and passed it over, his hand holding it over hers as she drank, spluttering after a few sips.
Woken by the fit, Eleanor sank back into the pillows before her eyes drifted over the two joining her. "Knockout. Soundwave." She wheezed with a smile, taking hold of each of their hands as tightly as she could.
Both men were tentative about holding her back, terrified they would hurt her if they held on too much. Knockout lifted her hand and kissed her fingers gently. "It's been a while El."
She turned to look at him, still smiling as she pulled her fingers free and brushed her father's hair back. "That it has." She chuckled but then coughed, waving the pair down as best she could before they panicked too much.
His voice dry, Soundwave was losing the battle to keep himself together. "You look wonderful my mate." He whispered to her.
A blush covered her cheeks lightly. "Charmer."
Silence filled the air as El got herself back together. Knockout spent it stroking his thumb against the back of her hand. "I hear that Unit E is doing well, El. You did a great job there, setting it up and all."
"No one calls it Unit E anymore Knock." Eleanor mumbled, her eyes closed. "It's NEST now."
"Well its doing amazingly."
"Yes." She mumbled. "It is. And… how's Cybertron doing?"
Soundwave swallowed before shifting to sit on the side of the bed. "Amazingly. We have almost fully recovered from the war now." He sighed. "I wish you could see it El."
Closing her eyes, Eleanor settled back into her bed, letting out a deep breath as she did. "Tell me more."
The two men looked at each other before Soundwave moved to lie on the bed, his arm wrapping around her and pulling her in closer, the shard of his spark humming happily at his closeness.
"It's wonderful El." He whispered, his voice cracking. "The sky is filled with more stars than anywhere in the universe all the time, younglings running around the streets, laughing freely. We have parks but they are filled with crystals, as tall as buildings, every colour imaginable reflected from them. And when the wind catches them, they hum, reaching deep into your spark."
"And a few months ago, we unveiled the memorial." Knockout added softly. "A fountain of silver and gold, the name of every spark lost in the war engraved into it."
Soundwave nodded. "The water trickles down and hits these panels, making it sound like the whole of Cybertron is singing."
"And the cities reach into the highest points of the atmosphere, just glowing with life, the metal sparkling in the light from the stars, a beacon to all those out there."
Eleanor sighed deeply, leaning on Soundwave and holding Knockout's hand. "It sounds beautiful."
Knockout nodded. "It is El. It's beautiful. And it's all thanks to you that we have our home back."
She opened her eyes and stared at him for a moment before closing them again and sighing. "Soundwave."
"Yes my love?"
"I'm tired."
Instantly the pair looked at each other, Knockout's face showing Soundwave's greatest fear.
It was time.
Swallowing, Knockout stood and leant forward, placing a soft kiss on the woman's brow and then her cheek. "Thank you, little Scrap."
Her hand closed around his, thanking him back as her words failed her. Soundwave took a deep breath as he shifted away, letting her rest purely on the pillows as he leant over and gently kissed her lips, a tear rolling down his cheek to her while his hand stroked her cheek.
Taking a deep breath, he tried to control the trembling in his chest, the feeling of grief he was already suffering from. Somehow he found himself drawing on the one of the happiest moments of his life and hummed along with the memory before beginning to sing softly, cooing his mate onwards.
"Look at the sky, tell me what do you see.
Just close your eyes and describe it to me."
He opened his eyes and looked down at the face below, tears falling down his face as his voice broke, hardly holding back the painful sobs.
"The heavens are sparkling with starlight tonight
That's what I see through your eyes."
His mate shifted slightly, brushing her nose against his skin and once more sighed, her breath brushing on his skin.
Soundwave closed his eyes, his hand closing tightly around hers, trembling. He couldn't sing anymore.
So he whispered the words that meant so much to him. To them.
"Here in the night, I see the sun. Here in the dark, our… our two hearts are one.
It's out of our hands; we can't stop… stop what we have begun." He leant fully away and let himself just cry, taking in the elderly woman before him as she lay there. "And love just took me by surprise." His eyes closed, squeezing two more tears out. "Looking… looking through your eyes."
The air was thick and cold for a while before slowly Knockout stood and walked around the bed to the other side. Soundwave's hand was closed tightly, shaking as it held onto his mate's. "Soundwave." He whispered before reaching out and tenderly touching the mech's shoulder. "She's gone."
Bowing his head, Soundwave let out a short sob before leaning forwards and his arms around Eleanor, hugging her tightly and crying into her neck.
Watching from the side, Knockout felt his own tears fall as he turned to leave the room and inform the staff at the house, closing the door behind him.
Alone, Soundwave leant back from the woman and kissed her brow once more before resting his own on hers. "Sleep well my love."
A/N: And that's it. What do you think?
