Sea of Monsters Chapter 1

NARUTO

"I don't think we've met. My name is Naruto Uzumaki, I'm a new teacher here."

"If what people tell me is true, then you're Thalia, or at least you were before you uh... turned into a tree."

A slight wind blew, but other than that, I was met with silence.

"I don't even know if you can hear me, but I can feel you. You're in pain. Yet you're still holding onto the barrier."

One of the clones I'd summoned to gather chakra popped, and I used myself as a gateway to let some Nature chakra flow into the tree I had at my back.

"If you can hear me, I just want you to know that you can let go. Focus on getting better."

Another clone popped.

"I'm going to protect everyone here."

Feeling the last bit drain away, I stood up and placed a hand on the trunk of the tree.

"That includes you."

Then I left for the lesson I would be holding, leaving a few clones to continue the work, and leaves rustled in the winds.

"All right, I hear you Greeks like working together in groups of three." I said to the campers present, which was all of the ones here at camp. "Back where I came from we did the same.

I paused to make sure everyone was focused on me.

"As such, you are going to be forming groups of three." I announced, and before anyone could get moving I continued "You are going to be stuck in these groups for the rest of the year so choose wisely."

It didn't take long for the many cabins to split up into smaller subgroups. I kept my arms crossed, and wore the appearance of amusement.

"Since I didn't tell any of you to start forming groups yet, you've all earned yourselves six rounds around the camp." I shouted, while forming some one handed seals to shake everyone out of their seats "Go, and anyone who is back late will have their groups picked for them."

"Sir, why are we doing this?" asked one of the children of Athena.

"Your demigod blood gives you all a innate talent for the technicalities of fighting itself, so we are going to be focusing a lot more on the other aspects of combat, such as adaptability, teamwork, and timing." I said, making sure that everyone else who was waiting could also hear "And though I appreciate the initiative in class, I believe you are all falling behind. -ttebayo"

I stood in place as the dust cloud from their sudden exit covered the area. It didn't actually matter that they were slightly behind, since no one was going to finish on time. Especially considering the traps.

As it happened, I was correct, no one made it in time. In fact, class ended right before I was going to start announcing the teams. Perhaps they would learn a lesson in patience? I suspected not, but it was worth a try anyhow.

Most of them did return looking like bushes or being different colours than originally, so I could rate their evasion at low chunin. Most of them hadn't been expecting it, so that may have played a part. There were exceptions of course, most notably almost everyone I had put through escape training had been expecting nonsense. So either the few sessions I'd managed before... I left, had an affect, or I was becoming predictable, which would not do. There were a few who thought they could cheat, and though I appreciate the sentiment, I kindly pointed them the right way.

There was something worrying that I overheard after I dismissed everyone to get cleaned up before dinner, but I would wait with confronting him until after dinner.

Luke had delegated the task of getting the inhabitants of his cabin back to the bunks to someone else and, with a few others, had started heading back towards the small arena.

I appeared behind him, overpowering the technique so that there was a small gust that alerted them to my presence.

I put my hand on Luke's shoulder and gave the rest a stern look that told them to continue with their business. A slight squeeze got Luke to nod in agreement, so we were left alone, and away from prying eyes.

I turned him to face me.

He seemed slightly nervous, but that may have been my grim frown at work.

"I thought I said that the duelling training would be unnecessary." I ordered at him, the question having already been answered. "I get that you wanted to continue with combat training while I was gone, but if you keep this up, there are no good things I can assume."

I let go of him with a slight shove.

"You're going to go to that your training session, and either you're going to teach them something useful, or you're going to put an end to it." I stated "Is that understood?"

He didn't look me in the eye, but nodded nonetheless.

I smiled.

"You're a good kid Luke, and you mean well." I let my fist bump his shoulder "Just make sure you stay on the right path."

With my piece said I used a jutsu to get myself to a position I could better get a visual of the layout of the camp for the sake of the seal I would be making.

ARTEMIS

I observed the twelve copies of myself that surrounded me, and gave a glance to the thirteenth I had conjured to observe. This was a simple training exercise I had wanted to do for a while, use the shadow clone ninja technique to spot any openings in my currently shifting style of fighting.

I started by jumping up, leaving a shadow clone in my place to prevent any pursuit. While airborne I went through the hand signs necessary for the great fire ball technique I had seen Sasuke use in his early days through Naruto's memories. I fired it off directly below me, using the blast to regain my elevation, then finished off any remainders with my bow, out of reach of the grounded enemies.

It wasn't quite, but it was effective for situations where I was surrounded.

I had intended to try out some other combinations, but a presence made itself aware to me.

"You know, I'm supposed to be the fireball between us." said, my idiot of a brother.

"I could acquaint you with it if that is your desire." I said in a low tone and a slight tilt of my head back his direction.

He chuckled and took a step back "No need for that, I've been hit by enough Naruto magic already."

I rotated and leaned against a tree.

"What do you want?"

He lowered his raised hands.

"Can't a man check in on his sister." He asked, a hint of wind in his voice keeping it light.

I crossed my arm and glared.

He took a step closer, and an arrow between his feet, courtesy of the clone up in the tree, told him that he was close enough.

"I'm sorry okay?" He pleaded.

I didn't lower the budget for my glare.

A few seconds passed by, and a few expressions crossed his face.

He settled on a determined frown, and strode forward, taking the arrow in the shoulder and ignoring it entirely, stopping only when he was mere centimetres away from me.

"Why didn't you just tell me that he was a good man?" He demanded "I'm am the god of truth, I could have known then, but you didn't want to tell me that, or anything at all."

I leaned forward bouncing of the tree and shoving him back.

"And then what? Hera uses my words and turns the rest of them against me, against him."

He took his place back.

"Against the two of us, together."

"Then nothing changes!" I roared at him, a finger on his chest "Zeus comes and we're stuck aside watching because we can't do anything against that! Because our power is nothing in comparison!"

He grabbed me by the wrists, he didn't do it hard, I could break his grip any day, even with the child like form I use.

"I know." He whispers "It wouldn't have done anything about the outcome, but it just hurts knowing you don't trust me."

I stepped away.

"There is no trust with you Apollo, you're the god of truth. There is only what is. I'm just disappointed that I couldn't see that earlier."

I started leaving, but he grabbed me by the arm.

"Please, could you tell him thanks for me, next time you see him." He asked.

I shrugged of his grip and made my way back to camp.

Halfway back, I noticed a number of poorly hidden tracks indicating that I had entered the site of an ambush. The arrival of a number of nondescript monsters almost immediately confirmed my suspicions.

I didn't arm myself with my bow, nor with my knives. Instead I brought my knuckles together, letting them audibly crack in anticipation. Pouring all my being into the tip of my fist, I struck the ground beneath me and devoured the unfortunate monsters in the force that followed.

All that remained was myself and gold dust, but in my mind I thought there was something odd about that. Normally the pieces of dust would spread apart and slowly dissolve in the air, but it seemed that some of these monsters where acting differently. Instead of spreading, it amalgamated at a centre point as if pulled through some form of black hole.

'This requires investigation.'

KURAMA

"Do you really think I haven't noticed that you have a lot more money than you let on?" She asked me.

"Whatever are you talking about?" I asked in return, a light hearted attempt at discarding the topic.

The disguised goddess of knowledge stared at me blankly for a moment.

"You bought a chain of Ice cream parlours." She stated "...and not as a franchisee, you just bought the franchise in its entirety."

I took a sip from my cup and displaced another signed off piece of paperwork.

"I don't see the problem here." I mentioned before grabbing another pile, careful to make sure the cup didn't leave anything behind to stain the cursed sheets of paper.

"You could be putting some of those resources down to support the work we're doing here." She commented, finishing off a stack of her own.

"Nah"
"That's your response, really?"
"It's not like we're failing."
"We can't afford the coffee machine."
"Were doing fine without it."

"Because we're both working overtime without getting paid."
"I already have money and you're a goddess, it's not like we need the pay."

"Weren't you the one that wanted the distinction between Athena and Melissa Thompson?"

"If you're going to ignore the distinction between this persona and my identity as the nine tailed demon fox, then you're already breaking those boundaries."

"At least I use a different name oh great and powerful Kurama."

"Unlike you I can't just mystically add another identity to official documents and databases."
"Would you if you could?"
I paused a moment.

"Much like you gods, my pride is, extensive. I want to make sure that when I mess up, that my name is on it so that I won't forget."
"Oh..."

"That's the last of it for today." I said, dropping the last pile into a drawer for later use.
"Wait, what's that?" She asked all of a sudden, pointing at the bottom of the drawer before I could close it. There laid a folder, unrelated yet closely related to the work here.

I brought it out, recognized it. Of course I did, it was my own work.

"Oh this, nothing to bother you with. It's an incomplete project I promised I'd finish some day."

"Promised to Naruto." She added.

I didn't let the confusion set in, it made sense that she could instantly read through information at a glance without actually looking inside, goddess of knowledge and all.

"Does he know that you're still working on it?"
"I don't want to raise his hopes pointlessly, and knowing him, he'd do something stupid about it."

"I have a library. There's a large section on medicine and diseases there. There may be clues that the mortal world of knowledge can't even comprehend."

I hesitated in my motion of putting the folder back in the bottom of the drawer and instead placed it in my suitcase.

Sigh

"Thank you, I'll take you up on that offer eventually."

"We could go there now."

I opened the door and held it for her.

"There's no need to hurry, I have an eternity to work on it."

I only headed out for a short while, using the time to grab something to eat and drink before returning to the office. Don't get me wrong, being that I'm inhabiting what is in essence a reinforced shadow clone, I don't need any nutrition, but I can still taste, and I like being able to continue without someone pointing out that I never eat or drink.

It didn't take long for the three cyclops' to arrive. I'd double checked my prior research by then. The three of them had been wandering around supposedly aimlessly for a long while, no home and no job, then one day for no apparent reason they shift gears and head in the direction of camp Half-Blood just in time to encounter Tsuki, Nico, and Bianca who had used the hell hound Allen's ability to shadow travel to get there. If that didn't stink of divine intervention, few things do. Fortunately things turned out well for both sides, but the three brothers were scared straight that's for sure, so they decided to get themselves jobs.

Since there were three of them, it was clear to me that they weren't first generation cyclops, children of Poseidon. That leaves the conclusion that they had one or two cyclops parents. Whatever the case, I couldn't find anything from before they started wandering, so I'm assuming that they either had some sort of hideout or proper guardian who properly knew how to hide.

It wasn't just chance that they were the ones I selected for this investment. Everything I mentioned up to now sets a decent guarantee for their character, and establishes potential that could be put to good use. There is my ulterior motive though, related to a simple fact. The oldest brother, Galto, had on his person an axe that had been reinforced with seals, as in Fuinjutsu from the shinobi repertoire. If I built up a degree of trust, I may have been able to learn where they acquired it. Neither Naruto nor I had taught anyone the art of seals, which leaves the most likely possibility being that someone had found one of the learning scrolls I had used and lost in the past and deciphered it.

My failings beget my action to fix them.

They'd been standing on the otherside of the the door, and they didn't think I could hear them from in here.

Galto, the oldest, lead the conversation, he didn't say much, but he made it clear to the other two that there was no taking back their decision once they opened the door. I'm glad that sunk in for one of them at least.

Viggi, the one in the middle, had grown curious and was coming forth with some wild speculations for what could be going on. He was confident at least, and no possibility seemed to escape him... I'd have to remind him to leave behind the pen he swiped on his way in though.

That left Claim, the youngest, was worried and second guessing the whole situation, but was more worried about what would happen if they went on without him. His caution would serve them well in the future.

I didn't rush them, I could call for them to enter, but Galto was right, and if they wanted to, they still had the option to turn back. Having been sealed away, I like to think that I'm an advocate for freedom of choice.

Their decision finally came forth in the form of three knocks.

"Its not locked." I announced, to which they entered, and I pointed out the three available chairs "Please take a seat."

As they sat down, Galto spoke up "Just so we're clear, we're not going to be doing anything outside of what you proposed. You try to get us to attack someone, or steal something and we are done, even if you are our boss."

I leaned back with a smirk, and said with a light attitude "I'm not getting you to do anything, everything that happens during this time, is under your initiative. In this scenario, I'm not your boss, I'm more of a guidance counsellor, for when you get stuck."

I leaned in closer, put my hands together, and rested my elbows on the desk as I got a maniacal look on my face.

"So lets get started. I'm sure you have plenty of ideas already." I said with a chill as my gaze shifted to Viggi. Consequently, Claim got a look on his face that said something along the lines of "Oh my gods, I was right! He is going to kill us all."

Naturally Viggi froze up, the ideas in his head, but the words stuck in his throat. To be clear to you readers, I wasn't using Killing Intent, this was just a well practised charisma. Galto put a hand on Viggi's shoulder, startling him away from my locked gaze, he received a curt nod from his older brother, and with that, was granted the room to breath.

He looked back, meeting my gaze.

"The guy who approached us in the parlour, he had a name tag with a business' logo on it. I know because I swiped it off of him when he bumped into me while I was cleaning the floor." he said as presented the aforementioned name tag. "Its almost impossible for us monsters to get a job in a larger mundane corporation, because we can't produce any work experience due to the Mist. So whoever he works for had to know he was a monster."

With a momentary 'hmm' I brought up a mental note I'd made earlier: none of these guys knew that it was a monster that had walked in until I had smashed it, Viggi had just outright robbed him. But... if I reprimanded him for it I would be throwing them off track. Great, now I have to buy an exact duplicate of Melissa Thompson's favourite pen and pretend that it was never stolen.

"So you have a suspect. Do you know anything about them?" I asked, maintaining the look.

"Well, I walked by their office the other day and it wasn't a human sitting at the desk." he commented, and quickly received a harsh look from both of his brothers.

My palm was reintroduced to my face. "First piece of advice. Speculate alone, investigate together. If you'd been kidnapped then and there, no one would have any trace to follow you."

I brought out a laptop and did a quick search, bringing forth some financial documents from the corporation, and turned it towards the three of them.

"What's wrong here?" I asked them.

They looked it over, a number of thought coming and none being spoken, until Claim spoke up, they'd been spending a whole chunk of money on something that the business doesn't actually do.

"So, lets go find out where that money is going." I said, getting up, and putting on a jacket.

Galto was the quickest to get up on his feet, and was got the other two going as well.

Then I lead them out the door, and to be honest, from that point on, everything they discovered was their own work, not mine.
