Total silence fell upon the kitchen as the shock of Phoebe's declaration left her and her sisters and her brother-in-law utterly speechless. After a few painfully long moments the stillness of the room was broken when Piper walked over to where her husband stood and smacked his arm.
"OW! What the hell Piper, I didn't do anything," exclaims Leo as he rubs his arm.
"Why didn't the elders tell you that little tid-bit? Didn't they think that was an important thing to let us know about?" Piper ranted as she vented to her husband.
"Don't take it out on me cause your upset with them," Leo responded.
"Well they aren't here for me to take it out on," quipped Piper.
"You know as well as the rest of us that the elders only share what they think you need to know. They must have thought their past was irrelevant," Stated Leo.
"If Phoebe is having premonitions about it, then it seems pretty damn relevant to me," Piper fumed.
"Don't you just love it when people talk about you like you aren't even in the room," remarks Kim.
Despite the sudden tension in the room Paige can't help but let a giggle escape her at Kim's words, despite her best efforts.
"That's what you meant when you said you were both powerless?" asked Phoebe.
"Yeah, it's a part of our past," commenting Tommy.
"For some of us Mr. Rainbow!" Kim remarked at his statement.
"HEY!" Paige shouted to get the room's attention.
"Domestic squabbling can be done later people we are wasting time. Leo go back up there and find out anything else you can, then orb to their places and grab them some stuff. I'm sure they don't want to spend their entire time here in their pajamas. While your gone we will hit the book and see if we can find anything in there that can be of any help," ordered Paige.
While it was normally Piper's place to give the orders and take the lead, Paige could see how things were starting to get out of hand and thought it was best to nip it in the bud before things got ugly. That focusing everyone's energies in the right direction so not to lose time was in everyone's best interests.
"Good Idea Paige. I'll be back as soon as I can," says Leo before he orbs out of the room.
"What was that?" asked Tommy.
"That is called orbing, its a whitelighter thing," answers Phoebe.
"Shouldn't you call work Phoebe?" asked Piper.
"Oh, right Elise will have my head if I don't at least call. As long as I make deadline she'll get over it. This is the first time this month that I've had one of my family emergences," responds Phoebe as she gets up from her place next to Kim to get the cordless phone.
"What does she do for a living?" asks Kim.
"She writes a very popular advice column. It is printed in the Bay Mirror newspaper," answers Piper.
"Advice on what exactly?" asks Tommy.
"Relationships mostly, she has a degree Psychology," answers Paige.
"When she is done with the phone anyone else have calls to make to their jobs or what not?" asks Piper.
Before either of them can answer Piper's question they hear Paige chuckling.
"What's so funny Paige?" asks Piper.
Page looks up from Kim's book that she managed to retrieve from its place on the floor, where it got knocked to in the chaos.
"I was just looking over the spell Kim used and judging by the way this was worded it seems that the powers that be brought them here to get couples counseling from Ask Phoebe. Just goes to show the universe does have a bit of a twisted sense of humor," Paige answers with a smile.
"What makes you think that it is your sister that we are hear for precisely?" asks Kim.
"Well how many can deal with and actually help with both aspects of your problem?" Paige answers Kim question with one of her own.
"Both aspects, what do you mean?" asks Kim with the look of confusion on her face.
"The magical and the non-magical, the way this spell is worded its for a non-magical problem, but you have magical exceptions attached to your problem and you can't solve one without solving the other," explains Paige.
"You know Phoebe might not be the only reason they were brought here," states Piper.
"What do you mean by that Piper?" asks Tommy.
"Simply that now that Kim has use of her family's magic it will play apart in any and all relationships from here on out. Being here can help prove to you that you can make things work with magic. Piper and Leo are living proof of that," says Paige.
"Also you are going to need someone to help you learn to use and control your magic. Until you do it will be unreliable and more of a liability to you. I think that someone was trying to insure that your magic stayed on in the hands of good as well," explains Piper.
"You know that would explain why you were able to freeze her this morning," remarks Paige.
"What are you talking about? I've spent too long fighting for good to willingly go evil," exclaims Kim.
"The first forty-eight hours after a witch comes into her powers she has the choice to willingly use her magic for good or evil," Piper explains.
"Why is there even a choice" asks Tommy dumbfounded.
"It is the window of time both sides agreed upon to protect free will. I know it was close with me, The Source tried to temp me up to the last moment. In an attempt to keep the charmed circle broken, but managed to see the truth in time thanks to my sisters,' answers Paige.
"Something or someone out there wanted to try to protect you from temptation's grasp, while also keeping you alive at the same time," commented Piper.
There was silence for a few moments as the two of them tried to absorb what the sisters just said. Finally Kim asks, "what did you mean by keeping the circle broken? You said you didn't get your powers until Prue died? Just who was Prue anyway? Obviously she was part of the circle, but how was she connected to your powers Page?"
Paige and Piper looked at each other then Piper took a deep breath and explained, "Prue was are eldest sister. Her death broke the circle of our powers, which is why Paige didn't come into her powers until Prue's death; they weren't needed until then. Prue died in a demon attack. The first time Phoebe and I ever met Paige was at Prue's funeral."
"Oh, I am so sorry for your loss! If you never met each other before then why were you even at her funeral?" asked Kim.
"I can't explain it but when the obit in the paper I felt like I lost her to, even if I didn't know why," replied Paige.
"I can explain it, Piper cast a To find a lost witch spell, hoping to find Prue, or at least her spirit, but it us Paige instead," answered Phoebe as she walked in with the cordless phone.
"How did they not know about you?" asked Tommy
"Our mother and grandmother never spoke of it or her. It wasn't until after we found out that our mother had a relationship with her whitelighter Sam. After she was separated from our dad that is," answered Piper.
"They had me as a result of that relationship. Until recently unions between witches and Whitelighters, especially those that were their charges were forbidden. It's why they had to give me up, they where trying to protect me. I guess they were afraid of what the elders might do with me if I was discovered. Which is the reason I was left at that church to start with, when I was only a few days old. I was adopted by a good non-magical family. I never knew anything about magic, my birth family, or the Halliwells till I met them about a year and a half ago when I showed up at the funeral," explained Paige.
"In fact piper and Leo's baby in only the second known of half-whitelighter child in existence," stated phoebe.
"You allowed to do that? What changed that rule? what made it not forbidden anymore?" asked an astonished Kim.
"We happened, we fought very hard, for a long time, to prove we could be together and not let our relationship interfere with our magical duties of charmed one and whitelighter. Eventually we convinced them and they gave us their blessing to marry. Which allows us to have a family and keep it," Piper answered.
Both Kim and Tommy looked stunned at this. "Wow, I never knew how lucky we had it back then in our ranger days," stated Kim.
"What do you mean asked a confused Tommy.
"we were freely allowed to date within the team. could you imagine how torturous it would have been if Zordon had mandated a no dating your teammate rule? Having to chose between love and the world?" responded kin in answer to his question.
"I don't even want to think about it," he commented with a small shudder. "We may have had to pay heavily for that privilege though. Everyone including our enemy knew we were a couple. Which explain most of what happened to us, but I would not have traded it for anything, it was worth it to have the time that we did," he said to her with a certain softness in his eyes as he did so.
" I seriously doubt there is anything that can keep highly hormonal teenagers from dating each other, no matter who are what you are. If they are determined enough they will find a way," commented Phoebe.
"speaking for personal experience?" asked piper in that Knowing sisterly tone.
"What? So I was a bit of a wild child in my day, I grew out of it," stated phoebe as Piper rolled her eyes.
"A bit? that's an understatement if ever I heard one!" muttered Piper. Phoebe glared at her sister, then realizing she was still holding the phone.
she says, "oh, here is the phone." she places it on the table then remarks, " I found that the excuse a family emergency works best. It's vague but still somewhat truthful."
Kim is the first one to reach out and pick up the phone, She walks out of the room with it so not to bother anyone with her phone call.
"So where is home for you? Piper asked Tommy.
"Reefside California," he answered.
"What about Kim? asks Phoebe.
"I'm not sure, last I heard it was Florida, but that may have changed," he answered.
Just the faint sound of Kim arguing could be heard coming from the other room. "That just a risk I'll have to take then isn't it!" she shouts into the phone.
She walks back into the room with the phone and a disgruntled look on her face.
"Is everything alright Kim?" asks Piper as Kim sets the phone back down on the table.
"Yeah, my job just giving me a hard time about my needing off so suddenly. They said I might not have a job to come back to if I take too long," Kim answered.
"What do you do for a living?" asked Phoebe
"I'm a fact checker for a fashion magazine in L.A.," answers Kim.
"When did you leave Florida? and why did you give up gymnastics? asks Tommy in a surprised tone.
'About a year ago. I had sprained my ankle and the doctor suggested to me that I should think about retiring from the sport. That as I get older, if I were to get hurt seriously, my body won't be able to recover the way it used to. That I was running the risk of moderate to severe disability. Honestly he was right with girls joining the sport younger and younger, there was no way I could compete with that. Plus the few weeks I spent hobbling around made me realize that I did not want to do that permanently. I guess you could say I was ready for a change. I missed California anyway," Explained Kim.
"Which Magazine?" asks Paige.
"Fashion Culture," answers Kim.
"Oh I love that one," comments Phoebe.
"Here your turn," said Kim as she handed the Phone to Tommy.
"No reason for both our jobs to be in jeopardy," remarks Kim.
He took he phone from her and headed into the other room so not to disturb them.
As soon as he was out of the room Piper says, "If you don't mind me asking, you don't seem that upset about possibly losing your job. Anything you want to talk about?"
Kim sighs, then says, "I'm not really, in fact it might be a blessing in disguise if I did get fired."
Why is that honey?" asks Phoebe.
"I don't know, I guess I'm just not happy anymore. I really enjoyed my job to start off with, but over time it just became more and more thankless. Especially after the new editor took office. You know the expression hell on wheels, well in this case it would be heels instead of wheels. It's like she enjoys stomping out any happiness at the office or any enjoyment any of us get out of our jobs," explains Kim.
"You sure it isn't just burn out Kim? asks Piper.
"Maybe it is, but it doesn't change the fact that the woman in question is the closest thing I've come to having to face down a villain everyday sine my teens. Working for her makes me miss my powers, if only to kick her butt with them," exclaims Kim with a bit of a chuckle.
"Is it that bad?" asked Tommy in an amused tone of voice, as he returned to the kitchen.
"Yes, it is! there are days I would love nothing more then to be able to pull out my power bow and use it on her," vented Kim.
"Then why don't you quit if you are miserable?" asked Phoebe.
"Well the pay is good, not that I really need it, but the benefits are great. Mainly I just don't know where I would go from here. I know that she-devil would make sure that I would never work at another magazine again," answered Kim.
"No job is worth being miserable, I know from experience. I used to work at a bank back when our grandmother was alive, because I thought I had to. grams was sick and I though the only way I could help out here was using my pay to help cover the medical bills. Grams made me see that I was better off following my heart and doing what I really wanted to, and not to worry about her so much. She must have know she didn't have much time left and she wanted me to be happy. I am much happier having taken her advice, even if it wasn't an easy thing to do," explains Piper.
"Where is Page?" asks Tommy having noticed that she was no longer in the room and didn't see her leave.
"I'm right here ," Paige answers as she walks into the kitchen with The Book of Shadows. "I thought we could look in here for anything on either Hannah's coven, or the Harper line, or even on Weston and how to vanquish him or at least what his powers might be outside of a normal darklighter," replied Paige.
"Wow! that book is huge," started Kim astonished
"That is The Book of Shadows. It is the spell book and history of our family. Just like Hannah's book is for your family," commented Phoebe.
"Generations of witches have been adding to our book . Just like they had with yours, or at least would have if not for the magic being in hiding part," remarked Piper.
Paige sat at the table with the book and started to flip through it as Kim looked on over Paige's shoulder in shock at all the things listed in it. As Kim watched Paige look through her family's book, Tommy looked through Kim's, while Phoebe helped Piper clean up the kitchen from the latest attack.
About 20 minutes later the silence that had settled over the kitchen was broken when Paige says," I found something."
"what?" asked Phoebe as she steeped over to the table from where he was helping with the dishes.
"The coven of the dual crescent heart pre-dated the Warren by at least ten years. it was founded by Hannah Hope Harper, the matriarch of the Harper line. The Harper line was a moderately powerful line of witches that died out circa the 1920's. When most believe the darklighter Weston finally got his revenge of obliterating all of the descendants of Hannah's coven, for using there magic to free the heart of the girl who was to be his next target. The coven's powers were mostly passive, but it was rumored that Hannah could harness and reflect the light around her at will," Paige read aloud.
"Is that it? asked Piper.
"Unfortunately," answered Paige.
"well other than that last bit about Hannah's powers, that wasn't anything we didn't already know," said Piper as she dried her hands and walked over, after letting the water out of the sink.
"Anything in Kim's book we haven't seen yet that would be helpful at the moment?" asked Phoebe.
"from what I can tell not really, but then I may not be the best judge of these things," answers Tommy.
"Hey wait a minute what is this?" asked Kim as he flipped back to and stops on the page where the final entries were. She read over the page, then flipped it over to find the others blank. "that is it? she asks.
"what's it? asks Phoebe.
"There are these two entries, that seem to hint at the information we need but that is it," replies Kim.
"let's hear what it says," requests Paige.
"Ok, the first one reads :
There are only four of us left, but we have managed to seal the one that hunted us away in a locket. Without a full coven I don't know how long it will last. heaven's mercy be upon those left if he ever breaks free.
The second one reads :
Our family's worst fear has come to light. I am the last one, and I know I am not strong enough to fight him. I have a plan to protect us all, now and for generations to come. to hide..." concludes Kim.
"to hide what?" asks Piper as she sits at the table with the others.
"It doesn't say, that's where it stops. it's like she stopped abruptly while writing. look how the last letter is flared out a lot farther than it should be. Almost as if she jumped or was startled while writing," says Kim as she turns the book towards the sisters and points at what she is talking about.
"It seems the only one who knows the truth about what did is the writer and she is long gone. Dead men tell no tales right?" asked a frustrated Tommy.
"Not necessarily," says Phoebe.
"Don't tell me that you have a spell for that," exclaims Kim.
"Matter of fact we do," responds Piper as she grabs The Book of Shadows and starts flipping pages. Just as she finds the page she was looking for , Leo orbs in with two duffle bags. He hands a pink bag to Kim and a green and white striped bag to Tommy.
"Those should last you about a week. Not that you should be here that long, but just in case," says Leo.
"Thanks Leo/" says Tommy.
"I'm guessing your past as rangers left you with a tendency to favor certain colors. I don't think I've ever seen that much pink in one place before," commented Leo.
this caused Tommy to snicker and Kim to blush a little. She then says, "One of the side effects of holding the power of a ranger, you develop a sub-conscious attachment to the color you serve under. You find yourself with need to wear it all of the time in civilian form," replied Kim.
"It is something that sticks with you even after you pass the power on," states Tommy which cause Kim to snicker this time.
"At least I only have one color to deal with," retorted Kim in a very amused tone.
"So did you make any progress while I was gone?" Asked Leo trying to keep things back on track.
"Very little, but I think that piper has an idea," says Paige.
"I think we should try to call on Eliza directly and ask her what she knows, and more importantly, exactly what she did," replies Piper.
"What did you find out Leo?" asked Phoebe.
"Well the Elders have no idea what she did, because she not only did she take the family entirely off the radar, she stopped the magic from being passed on to future generations. They did have some information on Weston. Turns out that he was so obsessed with wiping out Hannah and her coven he went rouge. After his escape from his confinement in the 20's he started seeking power so he could never be confined again. They say he became something of an abnormality, not really a darklighter, not really a demon or warlock, but full energy demonic and otherwise, and very strong," explained Leo.
"That is why he was only thrown back when Piper tried to blow him up," theorized Phoebe.
"Exactly!" answered Leo.
"That was all they could tell me, with the exception that by no means what so ever can the Harper powers fall into his possession," added Leo.
"Whoa, what do you mean fall into his possession? I'm not going to give them to him. I know better then to hand evil anything," exclaims Kim.
"You wouldn't have to, that's why we are protecting you because..." Paige started to say, but was cut off by Tommy who already figured out what Paige was trying to say, "All he have to do is kill you to get them."
He seemed to pale more at that news then Kim did, and it was her life on the line.
"Don't worry cause that is not going to happen, not if we can help it," said Piper in a very determined tone.
"In fact let's get started on that now. Best not to waste any time, especially when we don't know how much we have," suggests Phoebe.
"Okay, what first?" asks Kim.
"To the attic to have a chat with Eliza," answered Paige as they all got up to go.
Upon entering the attic the sisters got to work setting up for the spell. Leo handed Piper The Book of Shadows and she opened it to the right page even though she had it memorized as many times as she tried to use it after Prue died.
"Wow, big house," commented Tommy.
"This is where I woke up this morning. You think you were shocked, I rolled off that couch on to the floor, then watched Paige orb in right in front of me and start in with the 3rd degree routine," stated Kim.
I think you win, I at least woke to a familiar face and voice," says Tommy.
"Kim could you come over here please?" requests Piper.
Kim turns at the sound of her name and looks over at Piper.
"Sure Piper," answered Kim as she as she walks over to the little table that has five lit candles, The Book of Shadows, and other assorted things needed for the spell. The sisters were all sitting around the table with the book open.
"We want you to read this spell with us. Not only will it give you the chance to practice with your powers, but having someone from the family line will make the call a lot stronger then if we tried it alone," explained Phoebe.
Kim looked nervous but Piper patted her arm in a comforting manner and said," Think of it as a really long distance Phone call."
She sits down between Phoebe and Piper as Phoebe set the burning sage stick into a bowl inside the ring of candles.
"Just read from here to here out loud, then we will all read the last part together," explained Piper as she indicated the places on the page with her left hand before she grasped Kim's right hand with it, and phoebe took hold of her let hand.
Kim nods then started to nervously recite:
"Beloved spirit Eliza, we seek your guidance.
We ask that you commune with us,
and move among us."
Then the sisters joined in with:
"Hear these words,
hear my cry,
spirit from the other side,
cross now the great divide."
As soon as they finished reciting the spell a gust of wind blew through the attic making the candles flicker as little orbs of gold and silver light started to swirl around inside the circle of candles. The orbs multiplied rapidly and moved faster till solidifying into the transparent form of Eliza Harden's spirit.
