Kim Pov
After Capture the Flag, I went straight to sleep, completely exhausted. Luckily I didn't seem to get any of those weird dreams they warned us about when we arrived.
When I woke up, though, I kind of wished I was dreaming.
The entire cabin was pink and purple. Streamers and toilet paper hung between bunks and weapons displays. The barbed wire was covered with gold glitter.
And the entire cabin was freaking out and shouting and swearing threats across the central green to cabin 11. I struggled out of my blankets and sheets, still mostly asleep, and froze when I saw the sword. My rapier, attached to the wall next to my bed, covered in a bright purple... paint?
"Oh, dear." I groan to myself.
No, it wasn't paint, because it was too smooth and hard. Had they somehow dyed metal and dipped it? Why?
A little note was attached to the sword.
We pranked everyone, but I knew you liked purple. Haha!
It wasn't signed, and the note had been printed off a computer or something. Who in the camp would have access to the computers?
I looked closely and recognized the font- Times New Roman, font size twelve. Who used that font? And knew I liked purple?
I suddenly remembered the science project I did a few months ago with Lalna, and he'd typed up all the notes specifically in that font. I'd also told him I liked purple when we got to choose the poster board colours. Could it have been him?
Part of me was delighted that he actually knew my favourite colour, and part of me was sad that he'd pranked me with it. I mean, really? He was so annoying.
"Kim, get up! I have to fight Sjin in twenty minutes!" Minty yelled, swinging down off her bunk above me, landing easily and grabbing her own weapons, a spear and a knife.
"I'm coming, I'm getting up. Geez, Minty." I complained, rolling off the bed and trying to stand up rather than hit the floor. I failed, naturally.
"Grab your weapons, too, we have training later." A bigger, buff girl tells us as she shoves past.
I groan. "Minty."
"Yeah, Kim?"
"Take a look at this." I hand her my sword. Her eyes go wide.
"Can you even fight with that thing?" She says incredulously.
"I'm not sure. It's not paint; it's like another layer of metal." I say grumpily.
"Oh, well. It should still work for sparring; maybe some of it will wear off." The blonde says.
Breakfast came quickly; I didn't really notice much as I ate quickly, avoiding milk and such because I'm lactose-intolerant. I end up bringing a slice of toast along to Minty's epic duel against Sjin, because I was still hungry.
"Go shiv Sjin!" I tell Minty as we enter the arena. She laughs and smiles before grabbing her armour. Sjin is struggling with his greaves a little ways away. Toby, Martyn and Lalna are helping him. Actually, Martyn and Toby are having a poking contest, but still.
Minty turned to me, now fully kitted out in armour, and gives me a high five. I awkwardly realize I'd been staring the four boys for at least ten minutes.
Derek and the girl from earlier clap Minty on the back, telling her to kick some butt and whatnot. I slip away into the stands to find a good spot to cheer her on from, nibbling on my toast.
To my surprise, there was total of three cabins here- Ares, who were sticking in here for most of the day; Demeter, who were here to train in off time from the strawberry fields, and Hermes, who appeared to be here for the heck of it.
I ended up in the front row, sandwiched between Ares campers when a voice called out my name.
"Hey, Kim, right? Come hang with your dad's cabin, will ya?"
I turn to see the guy who was bugging Rythian's cabin mate yesterday, from Hermes, waving me over. No one seems to mind as I slip over to the larger cabin's spot.
"Name's Nick. Your dad was Chris, right? Cool dude. Come on, sit down, we don't bite- possibly unlike your other cabin." He scooted over for me to sit down on the benches. I accepted the seat gratefully, still unsure of the war-like relatives on my mom's side.
"So, why is cabin eleven here?" I asked the maybe sixteen-year-old warily.
"Sjin and Minty are both related to the cabin, and I like to keep an eye on the family. Besides, it wasn't hard to swap out a training session with cabin ten." He says nonchalantly.
My thoughts drift to Kaeyi, who'd known close to nothing at Capture the Flag last night. "Sucks for my friend Kaeyi though… she knew almost nothing last night for Capture the Flag."
He shrugs. "Hey, she's the first known legacy to be first-generation related to both camps, never mind such great demigods. She'll be kicking ass in no time."
"Wait, she is?" I ask. It was a bit weird to hear someone talk about one of my best friends historically. I end up looking at my feet, noticing a "YOLO" written on Nick's left sneaker in blue marker.
"Yeah. But hey, your parents are pretty popular themselves. Well except for that one mix-up with your dad's loyalties, but nobody really blamed him-they all had a point for what they did."
"Wait a minute, I need a minute to process that." I say not-so-smoothly. "My dad had loyalty what-now?"
He turns to me. "You never heard? Your dad changed sides in the fight against the Titans… but after that it's kinda a messy story. I should really let your parents be the ones telling you this, your mom would probably, like, kick my butt in ten seconds flat. Oh, hey, look, speaking of kicking butt, the fight's gonna start."
"What?" I whip my head around to see Minty and Sjin facing off in the center.
"Don't worry, Minty, I'll go easy on you. I'm a professional." He says, smirking.
"Famous last words." Minty says dryly.
"Begin!" Said Derek, at the edge of the arena.
Minty and Sjin both hung back for a minute, analyzing each other. Sjin feinted towards Minty's left with his sword, but she sent him spinning backwards easily.
"Get him, get him, get him!" I cheered.
Sjin didn't lose his footing, but Minty immediately sprang at him. She swung her spear low at his feet, and as he jumped over it, she used her free hand to shove him off his feet.
He scrambles to get up but Minty's spear hits the dirt next to him, quivering from force, and he froze.
Minty knelt next to him, and what she did next astonished me completely. And freaked me out a bit.
She kissed him
It wasn't much, really; a peck on the cheek, but the impact that she finally made her move on him, in front of close to a sixty people, worried me. Had she gotten drinks from somewhere again?
Then she smacked him in the side of his head with her knife hilt- not hard enough to knock him out cold but he was definitely gonna have a bad headache for a while. Head held high, blonde hair tied back in a ponytail I hadn't noticed yet, she walked calmly across the arena to Derek, who lifted her arm in victory as Sjin grunted something into the dirt.
The cabins erupted into cheers; it'd been a clear victory.
"Holy Hephaestus," Nick whistled. "She's got guts."
A little swell of pride welled up in me for my sister, but then I realized I should go congratulate her.
"Minty, wait- Ompff!"
I stumbled into someone, went flying, and hit the ground, hard. I blinked to make sure no dirt got in my eyes for a moment or so, and then decide to see who'd bumped into me.
Black sneakers, one with a purple shoelace, the other with a green. Jeans, a purple shirt, white lab coat with a pen sticking out the pocket, sea-green eyes, messy blonde hair, goggles with greens lens.
I'd run into Lalna.
"Oh, sorry, Kim." He reaches down to help me up. I accept gladly.
"It's okay, I was just going to see Minty…" I say awkwardly. For a minute, we don't move, still quiet.
Wait a minute… he's wearing a purple shirt.
A purple shirt.
He was practically taunting me.
"You helped prank my rapier, didn't you?" I accuse wildly. He steps back, and I notice he's wearing dark grey gloves, maybe to protect his hands while training.
"Whaaaaaat?' He says slowly. I shake my head.
"The font and size match what you always used when we did our science project, you know my favourite colour's purple, and you would have computers in the Athena cabin!" I declare.
"How do you know all this? Or maybe it's a coincidence, the note?" He suggests, looking flustered.
"Can it, Lalna. Who said anything about a note?"
He freezes, and then his shoulders sag. Part of me is victorious, part of me feels bad.
"It was Sjin's idea. They wanted to do some pranks… but if it makes you feel any better, your sword is still good against monsters. I made an alloy to dip it in, and it's actually pretty powerful." He said feebly.
I glare at him. He can be arrogant without even trying. "Thanks a lot Lalna, now can I go talk to my sister?"
He shrugs and steps aside. I walk away to find my sister as calmly as possible, but what I did suddenly hits me.
I just argued with Lalna.
With Lalna.
I probably had better chances with Benedict Cumberbatch now.
I shake my head and run into another person.
"Ouch, sorry." They say, and I look up. To my surprise, it's Sjin, holding an ice pack to his head.
"Kim, I was actually looking for you." He says.
"Yeah?" I ask warily. Considering my sister liked him, I should be civil, but he did help mess with my sweet new sword.
"Yeah. Umm, I just kinda, uh, wanted to know… does she really like me?" He asked nervously.
On one hand, I know she likes him. On the other, she'd kill me for telling him.
"Well, she did just kiss you on your cheek, didn't she?" I say slowly.
He nods and frowns. "Yeah, she did."
"Do you like her?" I say.
"Yes." He replies without hesitation.
"So… maybe you should tell her first." I say. Sjin brightens and races. "Thanks, Kim!" He shouts over his shoulder as he races off.
"Boys are such idiots sometimes." I grumbled to myself. First Lalna, then Sjin.
"Alright, line up!" Time for training!" Derek bellowed.
"What about-" I start to ask about my sister.
"Minty already warmed up and won a fight, she can skip the first bit today. Let's get moving on those dummies, people! Today we're practicing fighting with our bad hands in case of injuries." He drills on. I line up, easily shortest in the line, and thus at the very end of the Ares cabin. Besides me is the tallest in Demeter- a big dude with blonde hair and a sunburned neck and ears. I don't know his name.
"Okay, grab your sword of choice and find a partner who's close in skill to you. Kim, I still haven't seen you fight, so come over here."
I walk over, slightly nervous.
"Okay, since you're still new, I want you to take on Merida from Demeter after she finishes on that dummy. Watch her pattern now, before the fight." He steps aside to attack a dummy of his own. I turn to Merida, who's a red-head on the stick thin side, tall and wiry. She attacks the dummy with her sword in her right hand, which she's not very good with, it seems.
I suddenly notice the small and thin knifes hanging from her belt- throwing knifes? Was she into long-distance fighting?
She smacks the dummy in the side of the head and turns to me, hardly breathing hard. "So, you're next?"
I suddenly notice another thing when she turns to me- an empty quiver folded flat against her hip. So she's into long range fighting… how can I use that to my advantage?
Luckily, there are no plants in the arena for her to use. I have the godly edge here-speed and cleverness from Hermes and battle strengths from Ares. I hope, at least.
Derek clears his throat. "Sometime today, please, ladies."
The look Merida gives him is pure loathing, but Derek doesn't flinch.
She immediately turns to me and lunges. I quickly realize that she's about to take her anger out on me and jump aside nervously.
I draw my sword and off to the side I can hear Derek start laughing at it.
Well, I'll show him.
I parry Merida's next strike carefully, then again. She jabs at my leg and I dodge aside. I duck easily under her next clumsy swing, thanks to my height, and bring my sword in for closer combat.
My sword is long and thin; hers is shorter, but she uses it at an arm's length. I nudge her slightly with my leg as I block another strike, and she stumbles back with a startled look on her face.
I keep trying to get in closer to her but eventually my arms get tired and she manages to smack my sword out of my hand.
She holds her sword out towards me, but before she can level it at my collarbone, I draw my knife and step in close to her. Before she can bring sword in, I have my knife her chest. I can't properly reach her neck, but Derek gives me the victory anyway.
Derek told me to go take a break, so I excuse myself to go find Minty.
