He should have warned her beforehand, because if she had known what it was all about in the beginning, she should have tell him to break it to her when she's ready. Because even after he had told her everything, her head was still flipping on hinges and she looked like she was going to collapse any time soon.
After a long and nerve rocking silence, Gaeul tried to open her mouth and looked straight at Yi Jeong. "It was you", she started and he noticed her hands were shaking. He wanted to reach for it and held it close, but a voice inside his head told him not to. Yi Jeong stayed quiet for some time as he waited for Gaeul to find the right words to say, he was actually waiting for her to react.
Yi Jeong did contemplate if it was the right time to tell Gaeul that Junho was his heart valve donor, or that he was once an alcoholic and that his alcohol addiction lead him to have failure heart valves or that because of it, he actually had gone through a near death experience until they found a suitable donor who happened to be Junho, her husband. But then, he had spill the beans, not entirely, still she had enough data to make her gape at him like a fish out of the fish tank.
"I... I don't know what to say. It's very strange that you... That it was you. I don't know, Yi Jeong."
"I also didn't know it the first time. Actually, I have no intention of knowing who my donor was, because in the first place the donor's family opted to be anonymous that's why I simply thanked them through prayers. But then, in a not so freaky way, Jiho was both our doctor."
"One of his doctors, precisely." Gaeul corrected, before pursing her lips.
"Yeah, me too, I had a team attending to me that time", Yi Jeong added. "Jiho later told me it was Junho. Maybe he was bothered by the idea of not telling me because at that time I was seeing you frequently and that I am also working with you. But I think his pure reason of telling it to me was because he's suspecting that we are somewhat fated to meet..."
"Excuse me?" Gaeul asked him in disbelief.
"I know, I scoffed at him when he told me. I frankly told him that he was being ridiculous, yet being Jiho, he had some backup to prove his point. And he did not dare go step backwards and stated his personal experience. He told me that he believes such things happen, because that was what brought Yuri in his life. Jiho believes that it was Seohyun who brought Yuri to him."
If it was possible for Gaeul's eyes to drop down the ground, it would. She was surprised, confused and at the same time nervous. How and what would she tell Yi Jeong after the revelation? Should she tell him honestly that she loathed the person whom Junho's parents chose to save rather than their own son? Should she tell him that she had wished that person to die too because he took Junho away from her, that if Junho's parents did not gave up on him, he might have lived too? Not to mention also, how flabbergasted she was about all the freaky stuff that Jiho told Yi Jeong. And yet she was feeling a little concern about it since everything that had happened between her and Yi Jeong was seriously inexplicable.
Gaeul looked back at Yi Jeong, he was quiet on his seat and obviously, he looked nervous. She decided that she had to be honest enough to him and she needed to trust him this time. Gaeul realized that she owe him a lot to even hide what had happen before and the feelings she had felt that time. "Yi Jeong-ah", she began as she reached for his hand.
"Junho... He was my all. I loved him... so much and I felt like the world had abandoned me when my parents told me what happened to him. It was just a few hours after our wedding... he got into an accident with his jet ski and he hurt his head. His jet ski had some mechanical issues and he was unaware of it... it was too late when he realized everything. He collided with my Oppa's tug boat and they both were hurt." Her voice quivered as she speaks.
Yi Joeng shook his head, "You can tell it to me once you're ready." Oh! The frightful feeling of knowing the history of Gaeul's past with Junho was apparent. It stung like hell.
"I am ready. I haven't felt this ready to tell everything", Gaeul responded with a small smile and Yi Jeong could simply nod at her.
"I don't know really if what I was feeling that time. Two men that I love were both fighting for their lives and I was their looking at them, having no idea how to help them. I had my brother and my husband inside the ICU. And I couldn't even decide on who should I visit first. It was so hard, Yi Jeong."
Gaeul breathed and went on, "Days became weeks and then a month had past. I was waiting for a miracle, for both my brother and my husband. God did listen to one of my prayers, because Junpyo was slowly getting better. But God was cruel too, because Junho was slowly getting worse... he wasn't responding to any treatment. And I was losing the tiny string of hope I have for him. And then, that day came... He woke up, fluttered his eyes and gazed at me for so long. I stood there not knowing what to do, I wanted to scream for joy because finally he's awake, yet I could not make a word. We looked at each other for what seemed like forever before he closed his eyes again..."
"Junho-yah!" Gaeul choked and drowned in her own tears, "Yah! Song Junho! Open your eyes! Yoboe, please! Please?"
She was shaking, frantically searching for the call bell that was supposed to be at the head part of the bed. Gaeul found it hanging behind the head board and imaptiently pressing it for several times. "I need a doctor!" That was all she had made out of that call and everything was in blur.
Few medical staff encircled Junho's bed as they tried to evaluate his status and Gaeul was pulled out of the room, unaware of what was actually happening. After what seemed like forever, one of Junho's doctors went out of the room and went towards her. That was the only time Gaeul had realized that she was with her in-laws and Woobin was holding her.
"I'm sorry, but at Mr. Song's current status, it would be very impossible for him to be conscious. What happened might be a simple involuntary reaction or a reflex that was caused by some electrical issues in his brain. Mr. Song is not conscious and I'm afraid that he will not be in the coming days. To be honest..." The doctor directed to Gaeul and went on, "Mrs. Song, your husband might not recover anymore. He is getting worse as time goes by."
"No! Junho was awake a while ago. He looked at me... He looked at me straight in the eyes!" Gaeul wringled away from Woobin's embrace and aim up towards the doctor. "Dorctor Smith, he was awake. I am sure of that... please, please wake him up. Doctor Smith, I am begging you!"
"I was admitted after that. The doctor said, that I was malnourished and was experiencing over exhaustion and dehydration. They said the transfer from Greece to New York was too much for my body to handle. They went on into details of whatever I was not even listening and I felt that the doctors were distracting me from something that was significantly happening."
"I want to go and see my husband", Gaeul said as she slowly stood out of the hospital bed.
"I am afraid that you can't go to him at the moment, Mrs. Song", one of the doctors informed her in a firm voice.
Gaeul shot him a glare and glided towards the door when one of the nurses inside the room reached for her arm, " Mrs. Song, you have to stay in here, please."
"No! I have to see my husband. NOW!" Gaeul tried to shrug the hand wounding around her arm, but it was too firm. "Let go of Me! Get your hand off me!" She was getting hysterical and two more nurse came towards her, helping the first nurse in restraining her.
"Let me go! Let me GO!"
"I'm sorry Mrs. Song, but we really have to do this", one of the doctors came to her and her eyes widened when she saw him drawing a syringe out of his lab gown.
"No! Please don't do this! Please!" Gaeul begged when she realized that the doctor was about to administer her with sedatives.
"I was sedated and was asleep for almost two days." Gaeul smiled bitterly and gazed down her lap. She was having a hard time saying each word and as she goes deeper into details, it was more like she's putting herself back at that exact time. "I... I woke up and he was gone. I had no idea that he just left me. My whole world crashed and I saw myself somewhere dark and alone. It felt numb, as if a harsh wind whipped away the oxygen I was breathing. I almost lost it, Yi Jeong. I almost surrender to insanity and I was blaming God, I was blaming myself."
It was painful for Yi Jeong to watch Gaeul go through that harsh past again as she tells him what had happen. However, he was proud to see that she was that brave to face and recall it, even if it felt like she was killing herself once more. Yi Jeong held tightly at her hand that was with his, and slowly, he pulled Gaeul in and embraced her. He was gently treading his fingers against her hair, trying to shush her from crying.
"A week after he was laid to rest and just three days after Junpyo woke up; my in-laws told me that they decided to pull the plug, because it was for good." Gaeul was talking, detached form herself. "They thought it was best to let him go than to fight for him to live. My mother in-law comforted me. She told me that even if Junho left, someone, somewhere, a person was given another chance to live. They donated something from him for that person to live..."
Yi Jeong could feel that Gaeul was shaking against him and all he could do was to hold her tighter. She was crying uncontrollably and he was helpless. "I hated the world", Gaeul went on with a voice cracking at every sound, "I hated God because he was so unfair to me. We just got married and then he was gone! Just like that, Junho was gone. I hated my in-laws, because they're not supposed to let him go. They should have fought harder, they should have waited! I hated myself too, because I was too weak, that I failed to look after him, that I never had the chance of proving him all the things that I had promised him during our vows. I was so, so angry. And the worst thing I ever did was to hate that person. I hated that person, the one who lived instead of Junho. I hated that person who lived after receiving a part of my husband who died. I had wished that person to die too..."
Gaeul pulled away from Yi Jeong, her hands clutched tightly against the lapel of his shirt. "I hated you, Yi Jeong. I had wished for you to die... I'm... I'm so sorry!" She cried even harder when he pulled her again into his arms, and even harder when he kissed the top of her head. And she was wailing like a kid when he wiped her tears with his thumbs.
"Shhh! You don't have to say sorry. I understand why you felt that way", Yi Jeong paused for a while and swallowed hard, "I did felt the same way before. I had blamed God too, I had blamed the world, I had blamed myself..." He went on with a shaking voice and his eyes were already spilling those tears that should have been shed long ago. "I had blamed myself too, Gaeul-yang. I also wished to die too, that's why I had drunk myself to oblivion. I hated myself too, because it should have been me who died instead of Abojie, it should have been me! And when I was floating to oblivion, very ready to embrace death... I was saved. I had a donor, I was operated and I woke up breathing..."
Gaeul suddenly stopped from crying, and was looking at Yi Jeong's fragile state. "Yi Jeong-ah?"
"I was supposed to be hanging around with Lucifer and Judas, you know? I had expected that to happen, but then I woke up and saw a nurse, that was when I realized I was not dead. And that I would be living in pure guilt, because I can't kill myself because there was someone who died and donated his heart valves for me to live. And because I was to live, I would constantly be reminded that my father died because of me, and so I could wake up every day dreaming about how my father saved me from a shootout and how he died embracing me and I was helpless."
Gaeul breathed heavily as she gazed back at Yi Jeong. He was and is in pain. And just like her, he was held captive by that monster she referred as guilt. And just like her, Yi Jeong too was broken. With shaking hands, Gaeul reached and cupped his face, running her thumbs below the wheels of his eyes. She wanted him to stop crying, but they are both helpless about the whole thing. They were both helpless of the pin-up emotions they had kept inside.
"So Yi Jeong..." She called in a low, but firm and decisive tone, "From now on, don't you ever drink yourself to oblivion or even hurt yourself..." Gaeul looked at Yi Jeong right into the eyes, she was absolutely determined. "I already stopped wishing for that person to die. I don't want him to die anymore and I don't hate him anymore. Because, I... I am in love with that person. So don't you dare try to kill yourself!"
"I won''t." Yi Jeong was staring back at Gaeul. His hand was wiping her tears, leisurely feeling the softness of her skin against his palms. "I won't hurt myself..." He smiled at her, "I promise... Because I am also in love with that person, even if she hated and wished me to die. I am insanely in love with her."
She was sniffing and her nose was red from crying, yet she looked beautiful and adorable. Yi Jeong leaned forward with the sole intention of kissing her, but he stopped right after his forehead was resting against hers. "He won't mind if I kiss you right now, would he?"
Despite of herself and despite the fact that she just cried, they both just cried, Gaeul laughed at what Yi Jeong said. Gingerly, she grabbed his collar and pulled him another centimeter closer and whispered, "He's open-minded."
Yi Jeong snickered before lowering his head, sealing the gap between them in a sweet and gentle kiss.
...
Woobin didn't know how he ended up feeling ready to bolt away from Gu Junpyo. He was seated in front of him almost squirming like a kid, it was knew though, because Junpyo had been very lenient with him even if he had brought a lot of trouble to Gaeul before. But looking at him at the moment, he noticed that he was looking a little distressed and its making him concern knowing that whatever it was that Junpyo wanted from him, it's all about Gaeul.
"She didn't come home last night. Her phone was off and surprisingly, my parents doesn't look alarmed or what. Tell, Woobin-ah, where the hell is Gaeul? I know you know her whereabouts, so spit it out." Junpyo's voice was firm.
"Don't worry too much about Gaeul. She's all safe, but I don't know where she is..."
"Don't play dumb with me; you know where she is... Damn it Woobin, I need to know where my sister is, I need to talk to her..."
"About her getting married in less than two months? A week after you? To some stranger? In Italy?" Woobin stated levelly in a tone which could be described as a sarcastic inquiry.
Junpyo shifted in his seat and leaned forward, "You know this much? She told you about it, but then left her own brother clueless?"
Woobin shook his head, "Gaeul chose to spare you for getting all worked up about her situation. She was rational enough to free you from stress knowing that you're busy with your wedding." He sighed, "Gaeul is with Yi Jeong, and don't worry, she's in good hands."
To his surprise, Woobin did actually utter the word of assurance to Junpyo, in a sentence with Yi Jeong's name in it. Maybe, he had trusted him enough with the welfare of his best friend, yes maybe.
"That's exactly my concern. She's with that man and she has no single idea what lies behind her current relationship with that man", Junypo said in an uncanny way.
"What do you mean?"
"You better bring me to them, Woobin-ah."
In the haze of their conversation, Junpyo's phone rang and as he fished it out of his coat, he saw Jandi's name flashing in the screen. Without waiting for another ring to register, he swiped the answer line. "I'm with Woobin", he stated after he registered her 'hello'.
"You need to come home, Yoboe. You really have to..." Jand's voice sounded so worried that it made him want to leap to her side in a second.
"What's happening?"
"You won't believe who's in the living room talking with your parents. Junpyo, you have to come home, now!"
...
If Gaeul would be very honest, she would have complained that she was exhausted, that she had too much energy loss with all the crying she had done at the cemetery with Yi Jeong. But it seemed as if it wasn't the highlight of the day yet when she saw him driving the car towards the gate of the Gu residence. Gaeul wanted to groan, feeling a mixture of frustration, anxiety and concern, and she wanted to faint.
She dared look at Yi Jeong's side; he was drumming his fingers on the stirring wheel and his face void of any readable expression. She could not even tell whether he's nervous or what. If she had known that he had planned to send her home, she would have prevented him, because she's hell not ready for anything that would come to them once they both step inside the premise of the Gu residence.
"Yi Jeong-ah..."
"Relax, we're almost there."
"I can't do that, not when I have no single idea on what's running inside that head of yours." Gaeul replied, frustrated.
"Hmm... I want to send you home myself and I want to meet your parents too." Yi Jeong answered sounding nonchalant; trying not to crack a laugh after seeing Gaeul's jaw dropped.
"What?!" She exclaimed, but she was stopped from asking Yi Jeong if he had lose his mind when she saw him pointing something in front of them.
"I guess there're here", he mused while dismissing how his heart almost leaped out of his throat. Hell, he was nervous to death! It's now or never, Yi Jeong. He reminded himself mentally.
Gaeul froze, in front of them, just behind the gates that was slowly opening to let Destiny through, was her father's car. She could feel her heart beating right behind her ears, Gaeul was shaking. She stayed seated in the passenger's seat, unaware of what was really happening around her, she even missed how Yi Jeong jumped out of the car and went to her side to open the door for her. She was in daze, cramped in between her anxiousness and extreme dread, until she felt Yi Jeong's hand against her face while his other hand over her trembling hands that were on her lap.
His palm was cold against her skin and that was enough to say that she wasn't the only person nervous about what's about to happen. Gaeul turned towards her right and faced Yi Jeong who crouched to her level, looking concern over her. "I was half kidding about meeting your parents a while ago, but I was also serious about it. Still, I would like to know what you are feeling at this moment, if you too, wanted to see them with me."
Yi Jeong, even at times of extreme situation like this was unfairly very attractive to look at. How could he look so dashing when he's supposed to be looking as crazy as her? She sighed and inhaled like it was the very first time she had breathe in air, thirsty for it. Slowly, she leaned towards him and rested her forehead against his. This is it, no turning back Gaeul.
"Let's go see them, but promise me you won't let go of my hand."
"Who said I was going to let go of you?"
...
"Those flowers are so pretty. You seemed to love flowers, Mrs. Gu."
"Well, I do love flowers, but those are sort of gifts for the family", Soorin replied as she eyed the visitor across them, her eyes were casted on the baskets of flowers that lined up along the staircase.
The said flowers previously crowded the living room, and so, the house servants decided to placed it at the staircase and they were astonished that it went up to the last step above at the second floor. They said those were from a person with the initials of syj and they are for Mrs. Gu and Mr. Gu. The Gu matriarch was surprised at the grandiose gesture, yet Gu Booman was particularly curious about the man with the syj initials.
"My apologies, but my daugher isn't here at the moment." Soorin stated.
"I must say that you already told her about the arrangement."
"Well, part of the arrangement actually. She practically walked out from us just as we started", Booman continued only to see a small smile and a nod from the visitor seated across them.
...
Gaeul was literally shaking beside him and all he could do was wrap his arm around her shoulder and they both walk towards the veranda with insanely beating hearts. Even Yi Jeong could admit that he was having a hard time thinking of what would happen to them once the huge mahogany door opens. His head along with his heart, both were pounding, but he was more concern about Gaeul. If he was hardly palpitating, how much more is Gaeul?
"Gaeul-yang..."
"I know, I'm okay, as long as you're with me, I know everything will turn out right. I'm okay Yi Jeong. I'm okay", Gaeul uttered with almost cracking voice.
"If they happen to disagree, we can elope and produce a grandchild for them." He said out of the blue and Gaeul whipped her head to him, gaping in disbelief.
"What the hell, Yi Jeong? You can really throw a joke even at times like this?" She was in the midst of fainting because she's so scared, but here he was, finding a time to joke about something they have no control about.
"I'm kidding, Gaeul-yang. But, hey, jokes are half meant. I think it's a commendable idea." Yi Jeong countered a small smile on his lips.
"It's not making me comfortable in anyway", Gaeul replied, pertaining to Yi Jeong's joke.
"Okay, let's just go and see them instead."
A middle aged man who stood before the door bowed down to them, "Agashi, Master Gu and Madam Gu are in the living room. They are currently entertaining a guest." He said and Gaeul nodded stiffly.
The man opened the door the ushered them in, along the hallway. From there, both Gaeul and Yi Jeong walked hand in hand with top anxiety. Just as they stepped at the living room, a certain voice greeted them and the couple was utterly flabbergasted.
"Well, my soon-to-be daughter in-law is here. It's nice to finally see you, Gaeul-ssi."
There was a long pregnant silence that had engulfed the living room. The young couple stood dumbfounded, both their eyes were wide, especially Yi Jeong who literally choked his words in his throat. It was like an eternity of pure stillness until Junpyo's gasping voice from behind Gaeul and Yi Jeong, broke it.
"What's happening here?"
