Chapter 4
Dean walked out of the tent for what seemed like the hundredth time. The sun had set a long time ago as he looked up to the cloud covered night sky. He sighed before turning and sitting next to Abs, who was sitting on the ground with her knees pressed to her chest. She had taken up a constant vigil since Dean had begun trying to convince Cas to let her heal him. It wasn't going so well, every time Dean managed to get him coherent all he could do was apologize over and over until he passed out again. Each time it was harder and harder to wake him up.
"No luck?" Abs said quietly, her eyes roamed over the landscape attentively as Dean shook his head.
"I can't even get him awake anymore. How much time…how long…" Dean couldn't get the words out as Abs looked to him with kindness in her eyes.
"It's midnight. Dawn's in six hours." She replied. Dean sighed as his eyes roamed around the camp.
"It's quiet out there." He commented. "Unusual given all the kids I saw."
"I know, but it's always like this." She said. "Quiet."
"Abs, who are you?"
She sighed to herself, burying her face in her knees as a single blood red tear worked its way out of her eye.
"I am no one." She said in a muffled voice. "And no one is me."
Abs stood swiftly, a far-away look in her eyes, as she handed the gun she'd been hiding in her lap to Dean. He stared up at her in surprise.
"What?"
"Sic transit gloria mundi ante oculos meos." She said softly, touching Dean gently on the head before turning to go into the tent. Castiel was drenched in sweat, his skin a patchy red as fever raged within his body. Her wings materialized behind her filling the space as she knelt beside his body.
"Oh Castiel, I'm so sorry for this…but you cannot die. Not yet, I won't let you give up." She whispered kissing him on the forehead before gently placing a hand on his chest. A warm glow, like candlelight, began emanating from just under her skin. That glow brightened as her eyes drifted shut, face tilting upwards, until it completely encompassed them both.
Dean stood up and stared as the tent began to shine behind him. He watched, his eyes getting wider and wider as it blazed out into the night. The light shot out into the sky, thunder crackled ominously as Dean backed away quickly.
"What the hell are you doing to him?" Dean shouted shielding his eyes as light continued to pour from the tent.
"She's healing him." A snide voice said behind him. Dean turned to see a man, Barachiel, with dark hair standing behind him with an angel blade and a cruel look on his face.
"Who the hell are you?" Dean asked. Barachiel didn't even spare him a glance as he approached the tent cautiously.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you." Dean said pointing the gun at his head. The man turned and looked at him in irritation.
"There is an abomination of God in there. I am going to purge the world of it." He said pointing at the tent with his blade.
"I don't think so." Dean replied.
"I suppose I can kill you first." He said turning to face Dean with viciousness in his eyes. Suddenly a look of complete surprise appeared on his face as a sword tip poked its way through his chest. Light poured from his eyes and mouth as he slid down to the ground. Dean looked up from the corpse of the fallen angel to see Cas standing there, the light slowly fading behind him, as he pulled his blade from the angel's back.
"C-Cas?" Dean stammered. "Are you..?"
"I'm fine Dean but you need to get over here now." Cas said looking over Dean's shoulder. Dean moved quickly to get to Cas's side. Behind him had been what looked like the entire camp, all holding angel blades, even a small child who couldn't have been more than six years old. At their head was an older woman, her hair up in a tight silver bun. Dean raised his gun even though he knew it was no use against so many but he'd be damn again if he wasn't going to go down without a fight.
"I knew it was too quiet." He said as Cas lowered his blade.
"Castiel, you have done terrible things inside heaven and out. You must face judgment for your crimes." The older woman said stepping forward as she fixed her grey eyes on the both of them.
"Yes, Sariel, I agree but Dean and the girl go free." Cas said as Dean looked at him in disbelief.
"Cas…"
"I'm sorry Castiel, but they must face heaven's judgment as well." Sariel said her eyes flashing. The army behind her rose threateningly as Cas raised his blade.
"Who the hell do you think you are to judge us?" Dean said anger bleeding through his voice.
"She's Sariel, Angel of Judgment. She punishes those angels who fall out of line." Cas said.
"Oh this is precious." A dark voice said. "The angel secret police ganging up on one of their own…who can't even save the world the right way."
"Abbadon…" Dean said his eyes widening, the situation was going from bad to really bad quickly. The red haired demon sashayed her way into the middle of everything. She stood before the horde of angels like she expected them to bow and kiss her feet.
"Dean, long time…no see." She said with a red lipped smile. "I see you found your boyfriend. Pity, I would have loved to have seen him on my rack."
"This is a private matter. Leave. Now." Sariel said glaring at the demon queen. Abbadon didn't even spare a glance as she threw a dagger at Sariel aimed to kill her. A young man leapt in front of the blade, taking it in the chest.
"Leave." Sariel repeated.
"You dare give me orders? You? The pretend leader of some pitiful fallen angels? You have no more power with which to bargain." Abbadon said turning to Sariel. Suddenly screams began echoing from the ranks of angels. White lights and black smoke were appearing all over the place. Apparently she had brought her own army.
"Cas, we should go." Dean said beginning to back away slowly.
"Dean, I can't just…"
Dean suddenly pulled him down as a blade shot past right where Cas's head just was.
"Yeah, we're definitely leaving. Abs!" Dean shouted at the tent as explosions started around him. "Let's go!"
Abs staggered out of the tent but there was something wrong. Red blood tears stained her cheeks, red light glowed from her eyes, her body trembled, and her very presence screamed out wrong.
"Abs?" Dean asked uncertainly as Cas looked at her in horror.
"You…" The former angel breathed.
"You know her?" Dean said looking from one to the other.
Cas continued to stare as she raised her eyes to his. Abs lurched forward falling into his arms and pressing her lips to his ear. She whispered something quickly to him before he disappeared.
"Hey!" Dean shouted reaching to grab her shoulder. Her hand grabbed his wrist, twisting it almost to the breaking point, causing him to fall to his knees. He lifted the gun but she simply knocked it away and pushed him to the ground, shoving an angel blade up to his throat. Dean could do nothing but stare up into her eyes. They had turned completely black with a dark red light emanating ominously from somewhere deep within. Her face had turned from kindness to a dark animalistic grimace. He froze completely, knowing without any doubt that this was going to be his death and this time she'd make sure he didn't come back. Dean could only think that at least Cas had gotten away and that Sam was safe, when she blinked. Her eyes flickering back to blue again.
"Dean?" She whispered horrified before her eyes turned black again. She shoved the blade harder into his neck but stopped short of breaking skin.
"Abs…" He rasped out. "Abs, it's me, Dean."
"That's not my name…" She grated out in a voice unlike her own.
"Abs…"
"My name…is…Armageddon…" She said the red flashing brighter in her eyes.
"What?"
"I…will be…the end…of life itself…"
Suddenly she screamed as a sword shoved its way through her stomach. Dean saw her eyes go blue again and for a second they locked with his.
"ABS!" Dean shouted reaching upwards. Suddenly he found himself sitting up on the floor of the Men of Letter's library.
"Abs? ABS!" Dean yelled looking around.
"Dean?" Kevin stuck his head around a corner. "Sam! Dean's back too!"
Kevin hurried over to Dean as he quickly stood up.
"Kevin what the hell is going on?" He asked. "Where's…"
"Cas is…well…" Kevin nodded behind him. Dean turned to see Cas standing in the doorway looking at him curiously.
"Dean, when did you acquire a fledgling angel?" He asked as Angel peeked around his leg.
"Abs…Abs, told me to protect her." Dean said after swallowing a few times.
"What happened?" Sam asked joining the group. "And who are you talking about?"
"Abs, she's the one who gave me Angel…I think she's dead."
"Wait that woman who poofed you away?"
"Yeah…"
"She's not dead." Cas said. "She can't die."
"Dean? Sam?" Kevin called from the living room they had created on the other side of the library. They all trouped over to the small television set Dean had Macgyvered together.
"Breaking news, today in a homeless camp outside of Lebanon, Kansas a bomb was set off, killing everyone in the camp. No word yet on how many were there at the time but some sources say it was close to two hundred people most likely more." The news anchor was saying. Dean and Cas watched the screen with horror as camera's showed the hollow plane of destruction that used to be the homeless camp.
"It's begun." Cas said as Angel looked up at him. "Armageddon has been unleashed."
