"When I felt saw your reflection in the Aeluin, I-"
"Don't," said Andreth suddenly.
Aegnor's mouth fell open mid-sentence. "What?"
"Don't say it was love at first sight."
"But...why?"
"Because I don't believe in such a thing. I have seen too many foolish girls marry too many witless boys on that basis. They are never happy. I want to be happy."
"But..." said Aegnor, sounding confused but still rather pleased. "I did love you the moment I saw you."
"Well, I didn't love you."
"You didn't?"
Andreth smiled, ruffling Aegnor's spiky blonde hair, worn much shorter than most Noldorian princes. He claimed it made him looked like a forest creature if he grew it too long. Andreth would quite like to see that.
"No, I didn't," she said. "I thought you were very handsome, though. Nothing wrong with being handsome."
"Do you still think I'm handsome?"
"Of course still I think you're handsome," she said, shifting on the grass to meet his eyes better. "You haven't been hit in the face with an ax handle, have you? I think the more important question is, do I love you?"
"Well...do you?"
"I didn't the first time I met you."
"Yes," he said, a tad testily. "I gathered that."
"I got to know you, though," she continued, rolling on the grass until she ended up in his arms. "And decided that, despite my better judgement, I do love you."
"Good," he said, relieved despite himself. After all, if she didn't love him, would she be lying in a meadow with him discussing the subject?
Maybe. He would never profess to completely understand Andreth; sometimes he suspected her intelligence far surpassed his own. Once again, he lamented that she was mortal. Mortal and embroiled in the war that had consumed his life for so very long.
It was nice, he thought, to lay in a meadow and not think about that for a while.
"I don't think I loved you when I first saw you either," he added eventually, after thinking about it. "In truth, I only thought you very pretty, and worth getting to know."
She grinned. "That's the nicest thing a boy has ever said to me!"
They kissed, and she was soft and warm and filled with no less fire than him. That was what Aegnor loved about her.
Reviews are love! :)
