Chapter 34

Epilogue

Unknown

He woke up screaming. He screamed in pain, confusion, fear, and he screamed in anger. For more then an hour he convulsed and writhed in agony, barely comprehending where he was. It wasn't until he managed to turn his head and see the woman he knew to be his wife lying dead beside him that the pain began to subside and his mind began to clear. He stumbled out of bed, and momentarily brushed past a houseplant sitting on his bureau. He watched with satisfaction as the plant withered and died in mere seconds.

Dressing himself with clothes he found in his drawer, the man slowly walked outside, shielding his pale skin and large green eyes from the morning sun. He walked onto his lawn, the grass turning brown beneath his feet. As he looked around, he could see the people of the world beginning their days. Children went off to school, and various men and women began to head to work. One child even smiled and waved at him as he passed. The man frowned at all he saw.

"I have been gone too long." He said to himself.

He looked to the ground and noticed a weed growing up between the flowers of his garden. He bent down to pluck the weed from the soil, watching the flowers die as his hand brushed their petals. He studied the weed for a moment, eyeing it from all sides before watching it turn to dust, just as the flowers had.

"If have work to do." The man said as the dust drifted away on the wind.

"I'll say!"

The man turned to see another man, a neighbor perhaps, leaning over the fence separating their two properties. With a jaunty smile and a tip of his wide brimmed hat, the neighbor pointed to the dead flowers.

"Looks like your garden didn't survive the winter." The neighbor said. "Oh well, today is a new day."

The man watched his neighbor go about his business, oblivious to the events that had transpired though the night next door.

"Yes, it is." The man said, surveying the world around him. "But this new day is different. This day will be remembered for millennia. This day has brought Death."
