Extra: After The Curse Part 2

Kanade began to become obsessed with whatever it was that had happened before they woke up in the ruins. She would spend every waking moment of her free time studying records of the building and looking up the lives of anyone who had their names. It got to a point where Kaname would have to carry her home passed out from the public library at 2 in the morning.

Kanade walked back to her class from the cafeteria in a daze. She was exhausted from researching all night. She glanced over at Kaname, he was surrounded by a crowd of girls as he leaned against the wall and smiled down at them, but it wasn't the same smile as when she first saw him... It was much different.

"Kaname! Kaname, won't you go bowling with me after school today?" A girl asked as she clung onto Kaname's arm.

"No! I want Kaname to tutor me today!" Another girl said.

"Sorry girls. I'm going home with Kanade today." Kaname smiled. All the girls turned towards Kanade who held her head down as she walked past him.

"Kanade, do you want me to carry your books for you?" Kaname asked.

"No, it's fine thanks." She said before walking off a bit faster to her classroom.

Later that day during one of the breaks a group of girls from a variety of classes surrounded her as she sat quietly at her desk.

"Who do you think you are, rejecting Kaname like that!?" One of the girls said.

"You may be his sister, but that doesn't mean to can treat him like crap!"

"Kaname is so kind, but you're just a bitch!"

Kanade just head her head down as she listened to their hurtful words.

"Get away from her!" A deep voice exclaimed. The girls turned around and gasped to see Kaname walking up to them in a fury. Kanade lifted her head in surprise.

"Kaname! It isn't how it looks!" One of the girls said.

"She's just so rude to you, we thought we should say something."

"That isn't any of your business how she treats me." He growled. "Now go."

They did as he said and scattered.

"Are you alright?" Kaname asked.

"… What's wrong with you?" She mumbled.

"Huh? What do you mean?"

"I don't always need you to save me!" She blurted out. "I don't need you smothering me with your kindness! Stop showing up everywhere I go! Stop suffocating me!" She instantly regretted her words. Her eyes widened and she covered her mouth with both of her hands. She looked up at Kaname to see him looked down at her in surprise. Everyone around them watched in disbelief.

'No... that is not what I meant to say...'

He smiled, "If that's what you want." He said before turning around and leaving.

She watched him walk away from her and she felt her heart drop deeper and deeper with every echo of his steps and as he turned the corner her tears began to form.

'No…

No…

Don't do that….

Don't smile with such sad eyes…'

As Kanade walked back home, all alone, she felt an emptiness overcome her. It wasn't the same without him smiling next to her, asking about her day at school and talking about what he should cook for dinner.

'I was so overwhelmed by my emotions...

Just being around him makes everything... harder...

But I still don't like this feeling when he isn't around either.

I don't understand...

I don't understand what this is.'

When she got to the apartment she was surprised to see that it was locked.

'He hasn't come home yet?... I suppose he's trying to avoid me...'

She decided she would sit and wait for him, but hours went by and the sun went down; she was beginning to get worried that he may never come back. Just the thought of it sent her into a state of utter despair.

She pushed herself up and walked over to the door to his room. She reached out for the handle, her hand trembling as she feared for the worst. She forced down on the handle and pushed open the door to see that everything was still there just as she had hoped. There was still a chance that he would come back... but still she didn't want to wait anymore. She grabbed her coat and ran out the door.

She ran through town in search for him and as she was running she realized,

'Where would he be?

I...

I don't know a thing about him.

I don't know where he would go when he is sad...

I don't know what he does in his free time...

I don't know a thing.'

She ran to the school, but he wasn't there. She ran to the bowling alley, the public library, she ran everywhere... until she finally stopped, sat down and tried to catch her breath as she had given up. The sun began to rise and she felt her chest begin to tighten as the cool breeze swept across her brow.

'Idiot.

How could I say those things?

I've lost him...

I've lost the only thing I had.

What will I do without him now?' She thought as she stared up at the night sky.

Suddenly she remembered the one place she hadn't checked. She jumped up and ran as fast as she could, she wouldn't stop no matter what. She didn't care if she would keel over or cough up blood, it didn't matter how much she stressed out her body, she just wanted to see Kaname.

When she arrived at the ruins where her and Kaname woke up together with no remembrance of their past, she stopped and fell to her hands and knees in the grass, coughing nonstop as she tried to catch her breathe. She looked over and there he was, staring up at the sky. She forced herself up and stumbled through the large crumbling hole in the wall.

"Kaname." She said, her voice cracked. He looked over and his eyes widened in surprise as he saw her stumbling over to him.

"Kanade!"

"I'm sorry." She said as she fell to her hands and knees on the concrete a few feet away from him with her head down. "I'm sorry about what I said."

"Kanade..."

"I was frightened."

He stared down at her in confusion.

"About what?"

"Everything." She lifted her head and their eyes met. "I don't understand anything that is happening. The world just doesn't seem to make any sense... and when you're around I become more and more curious until I just want to puke... but when you're not around..." She tightened her hands into fists as she tried to muster up the courage to say the truth." I feel so lonely that I just want to fall asleep and never wake up again! I don't understand... and it's killing me."

There was a long moment of silence as Kaname consumed her words. She began to shake in fear of his next words.

"... I was scared too." He finally said. Kanade lifted her head up in surprise. He never seemed scared, she never imagined that he could feel that way. He was so perfect, so amazing, how could he feel frightened of anything? "When I first woke up right here. I thought that I was alone. I was scared, but then... you sat up and looked up at me with those big blue eyes and I felt suddenly relieved. I don't understand it myself... but no matter where I am or what's going on around me, whenever I see you I can't help but smile." He said as a smile began to form as he stared down at her. "I enrolled in your school because I wanted to feel that way as much as possible, I didn't want to lose that feeling." He lightly chuckled as he looked down in embarrassment. "For the first two weeks before it started I even studied at the public library everyday so I wouldn't be behind you." He looked back up at her and his smile grew as she stared back at him with wide eyes. "It's okay not to know or understand things, sometimes... you just need to go with it."

Kanade stared up at him as she consumed his words.

"So... that was the only moment you were scared? Before you knew I was with you?" She asked.

He laughed and said, "I've been scared countless times since then. I was scared that you hated me and that I annoyed you, I was scared that you didn't find that same comfort in me as I do in you, I was scared that you meant what you said earlier today."

"I didn't... I... I..."

"It's alright." Kaname said as he stood up and walked over towards her. "You don't have to strain yourself anymore." He held out his hand for her and she stared up at it in awe. "I know how hard that was for you to say, so we will leave it at that."

She stared up at him for a moment before slowly taking hold of his hand. He helped her stand up and pulled her into his arms.

"Let's go home." Kaname said as he stroked her golden hair and kissed the top of her head. She nodded and leaned on him as they began to walk.

"... Kaname." Kanade said.

"Yes?"

"We're... family right?"

"…I will always be here for you. Isn't that was family means?"

The bell for classes to start rang and the teacher walked in.

"Alright class, today we will be watching Romeo and Juliet." He announced as he switched the lights off and turned on the TV.

Kanade didn't read the entire play. She found it hard to understand and she gave up halfway through.

Kanade watched and tried to follow along the best she could and when it was over she was still confused. She couldn't follow at all.

There was a break and Kanade was still hung up on the movie. She wanted to understand, she wanted to make sense of it all.

"Hey Kanade." A classmate of hers said as she walked over to Kanade's desk.

"Hmm?"

"How'd you like the movie?"

"Uh... well it was a bit confusing."

"I know how you feel." She laughed as she sat down in the empty desk next to her. "But it's romantic anyways."

"It is?" Kanade asked, surprised that killing yourself was a romantic thing.

"Well yeah. They were so in love they couldn't imagine life without each other."

"Love?" Kanade had never heard the word before. She didn't understand it. Although to seemed foreign to her, it still brought up these nostalgic feelings.

"Yeah, love at first sight. So cute!" The bell rang and everyone went back to their desks. Kanade was unable to concentrate on her studies, as her thoughts kept going back to that word; love."

As Kanade and Kaname ate lunch together she was unable to escape the thoughts around that one word.

"Kaname?"

"Hm?"

"Do you know what love is?"

"Love? Well... When I was studying Romeo and Juliet a lot of the reviews mentioned it, so I looked it up in the dictionary and it's apparently "an intense feeling of deep affection for someone."

'An intense feeling of deep affection?

What does that mean?

What kind of affection?

Is this what I feel... for Kaname?'

"I honestly don't understand the concept myself, but... I can't help but feel nostalgic about the idea." Kaname said.

"Maybe you were in love before you lost your memory." Kanade said.

"Yeah, maybe."

As Kanade and Kaname walked back to their classrooms, the most popular girl in school approached them.

"Hey Kaname, we are still on for after school right?"

He nodded and she gave him a smile before walking off.

"What are you doing after school?" Kanade asked.

"We are doing a project together in science and decided to get a head start on things, so we are going to the library."

"Oh."

'I... I don't want Kaname to go.

I don't want him to hang out with other girls...

I want him... to stay by my side and only mine...'

As Kaname and the girl walked to the library together, Kanade watched from the front doors of the school. She didn't want to feel the way she did for him. This forbidden, one-sided love... it was making everything around her harder to bear.

'I love him... I love Kaname.'

For some reason this realization made her feel overwhelmingly sad. It didn't make sense... when Romeo and Juliet first found out they loved one another they seemed happy... so what was wrong?

Kanade began to feel guilty for her feelings for Kaname... there was something wrong with loving him and it resulted in her avoiding him once again.

One day as Kanade was going to the library; she spotted Kaname with the girl from the other day there. She quickly hid behind a bookshelf.

'What am I doing? They are just doing a school project... why am I hiding?'

She peeked out from behind the shelf to see them laughing and smiling. Kanade couldn't help but feel saddened by this, she felt something for him and seeing him with someone else was hard to watch. The girl then leaned in and kissed his cheek and Kanade's eyes widened in surprise.

He just laughed.

He didn't push her away, he didn't protest, he just laughed.

Kanade felt heartbroken and she ran out of there.

She ran all the way to the ruins where she had awoken with Kaname. She stayed there until nightfall. She lied on the stone platform and stared up at the stars.

'I guess he has a right to be with other girls... it's not like we are together, we are brother and sister nothing more.'

"This message is from our mother and father. We want to give to you, whom we both love, the world we saw when we were human.'"

'What does that mean? When we were human? Does that imply that they were not human? Or that they did something that made them seem inhuman?'

"Please, forgive me for my betrayal to you"

'What betrayal was he talking about?'

"What's the point of telling? It's not like you'll remember."

'Does that mean that this fate is indefinite? That we will never remember no matter how hard we try and we won't find any proof of our existence anywhere?

I've searched for so long but…

There's absolutely nothing…

What do I do?

Who were we?

Did we know one another?

Were we good people?

Do we even exist?'

"What now?" She whispered before letting out a sigh. She felt her eyes begin to get heavy and ended up falling asleep.

"Kanade!" A high pitched voice called out for her, but there was no one around. "Kanade!" It cried out again.

"Hello?" Kanade said as she looked around unable to find the voice's owner.

"Kanade, what are doing all alone?"

"What do you mean?" Kanade asked.

"Kanade, you cannot let him be alone, you cannot leave him."

Suddenly a large apple tree appeared in front of Kanade it was a large magnificent tree and its leaves flew in the wind as if it was snow falling from the sky.

"You cannot be alone."

"Do you remember me?" A different, deep voice said. She turned around and a beautiful boy with silver hair gazed down at her. She felt sad when she looked up at him... like her heart was being ripped into two.

"I... I..."

"It's okay, you don't have to push yourself." He lightly touched her cheek with the tips of his fingers.

"I'm sorry..." She whimpered as she stared up at him, tears beginning to fall.

"What for?"

"I'm sorry that we never were able to grow up together and that I hurt you... over and over again."

"It's not your fault."

"I'm sorry." Her voice cracked as her tears blurred her vision. He pushed back her hair from her face and wiped her tears with his thumb as they fell.

"It's alright, I forgive you."

"We should have grown up together... grown old together... died together... we should have had children and gotten married. I should have been able to wake up every morning and see your face... But I can't... I can't even remember your name... I'm sorry. I'm sorry." He pulled her into her arms and held her tight as she laid her head against her chest. "I'm sorry."

"I forgive you." He whispered. "Even though we never got to do those things, we still had a good run. I loved you till the very end and I know you feel the same. Thanks to you I was able to be happy, now it's your turn."

She felt her tears begin to get heavier as she tried to control her breathing.

"I'm sorry." She choked out.

"I know, I forgive you."

"I'm sorry."

"I know." He leaned lifted his head up and kissed her forehead. "It's time to let go."

"...Thank you." She whispered as she loosened her grip on him.

He disappeared.

Kanade shot up from her spot, gasping as she woke up from her dream.

"Kaname."

"It's alright, as long as you have each other."

"Kaname." She jumped up and began to run home.

However, when she got there all of Kaname's stuff was gone along with a note,

I've been offered a year to study abroad. Goodbye.

"No." She whispered before she ran out as fast as she could to the train station.

'Please, please don't be gone yet.'

When she got there she searched everywhere for him, but he was nowhere to be found. After awhile Kanade gave up and sat down on one of the nearby benches in despair. Tears flowed down her cheeks as she thought,

'He's gone. He's gone and I'm all alone.'

"All aboard train 3B!" The announcer exclaimed.

Kanade glanced up and her eyes widened as she saw Kaname walked past her.

'I want to get to know Kaname better...

I want to know what he's thinking...

I want to understand him.'

"Kaname!" He stopped in place as he heard her familiar voice. "I don't care anymore!" She shouted. "I don't care about the past." Kanade stood there, waiting, as she caught her breath. He slowly turned towards her, surprised by her words.

"Kanade!? What do you mean? What past? We don't have one… neither of us."

"Of course we do." Kanade said. "We just don't remember… ever since we woke up in those ruins with those strange people all I have ever been thinking about is what happened. I was so caught up in the idea of what had happened that I didn't even pay attention to right now. I didn't even pay attention to the feelings I have for you right at this moment and ever since that day."

"What feelings?"

She remembered the story of Romeo and Juliet, she remembered the word that seemed just perfect, but would he really understand? Would he really get what she was saying if she said it?

"… You were my beginning. Ever since I woke up all there ever was that seemed to surround me was you… and although I was so caught up in the past that I couldn't see it… there was still something inside of me that reacted to it, every second of everyday this… feeling of love I have for you has grown."

'I said it… Did he notice?'

Kaname stared at her as snow began to fall down and the silence filled the air.

"I love you." Kanade said as she took a deep breath as she felt a warmth fill her when she finally admitted it. "I love you more than anything and anyone and I don't want to leave you alone, I don't want to lose you. I don't care if you are my brother, I don't care if you don't feel the same way, I don't care if you have feelings for someone else. I would do anything for you. I'd even die! I want to understand you, I want to get to know you, because I love you!"

'I understand now. All of these feelings I feel, I would be nothing without them and these feelings that you give me… they are the only thing that can keeps me moving.'

"We aren't brother and sister." Kaname bluntly said.

"... How could you know such a thing?"

"I sent in a DNA test the first week we were together." He gave her a crooked smile as her eyes widened in surprise.

"So... we aren't related?"

"Nope."

"So... it's okay for me to love you this way?" She mumbled as she held her head down.

"Yes." He said as he walked over to her and lifted up her chin. "And it's okay for me to love you as well."

He leaned down and pressed his lips against hers. For a moment she was so surprised she kept her eyes open, but after awhile she soon relaxed and closed them as she deepened the kiss and wrapped her arms around his neck.

'I'm...

I'm kissing Kaname.

Kaname...

Kaname loves me.

I'm so happy, I feel like I might explode.'

Kaname pulled away and wrapped his arms around her. She buried her face in his chest as he stroked her hair.

"I love you." He whispered in her ear and she felt as if she was going to melt.

"Last call for train 3B." The announcer said.

"I'll come back for you." Kaname said.

"And I'll wait for you, because we're family."

He smiled, just like the first time she saw him, and she felt tears begin to form from the overwhelming feeling of happiness.

~6 years later~

"Mommy?" Kanade glanced down at her child as they stood out in the snow.

"What is it Yuki?" She said as she tightened her grip around her daughter's hand.

"Hatori and I have been talking…"

"I don't see how that's possible since he's only a year old, but okay." She lightly laughed as she glanced down at her son who was clutching onto her other hand.

"Why is it that you say you and Daddy were born together? You don't have the same mommy..."

"I was wondering when you would ask that." Kanade said as she knelt down in front of her two children and smiled. "Your father and I, we took our first breaths in each others arms. No, we don't have the same mommy. We actually just sort of woke up. Perhaps we were never 'born' from a mommy and daddy like you two, but you see, there are some things in this world that are unexplained and we will never really come to understand them… but the fact that they are there, gives me a very odd sort of comfort."

"Huh?" Yuki said as she cocked her head to the side. Kanade laughed.

"Okay, then how about this? Your father and I fell asleep, for a very long time and two people, who loved us very much wished upon a large apple tree and that tree was so magical and felt so much of their love that it decided to shed some of it's leaves and wake us up. The thing is, since we were asleep for so long we forgot everything of when we were born, and all we had left were the feelings of love the two people had for us. So, daddy and I woke up in each other's arms like babies and set out into the world holding hands. We've loved each other for a long, long time. Even when we were sleeping for so long."

"I like that one the best." A deep voice said. Kanade smiled and glanced back to see Kaname laughing as he approached her.

"We were just killing time while we waited for you."

"I told you to stop waiting out in the cold for me when I go off for work, you're going to get sick; all of you." He walked up to his wife and pecked her lips. "And stop telling them all these fake stories about us." He chuckled as he wrapped her in a warm hug before picking up their daughter.

"How do you know it is fake? It all comes from my head so it could all very well be true!" Kanade said as she picked up their son and headed inside.

"And the one about us being vampires and you my long lost bride is true?"

"Well you never know! Those two girls did say that their parents weren't human, how do you know we weren't either?"

"What about the one where I was in love with my sister and you with her childhood friend and when they ran off together we got together on the rebound?"

"That one was the more depressing one… but it still could have happened!"

"What about the one where you died in my arms and then reincarnated?"

"That one was the best!" Yuki exclaimed.

"Oh you think so?" Kaname laughed and she nodded.

"Well in the end it doesn't matter, because I have you right here, right now." Kanade said before leaning in and pressing her lips against Kaname's.

"Ew!" Hatori said.

"Isn't he a little young to be criticizing our public display of affection?" Kaname said.

"It's your fault for giving him your smart genes!" Kanade said.

Kaname laughed, "I'm so glad I have you." He leaned in for another kiss and laid his forehead against hers, smiling.
